Re: Just wondering!!!!
Biggmo, what specific problem are you having? Downloading from the internet is kinda vague :)

Re: Just wondering!!!!
We all do, and they can be very different. :)
I got the N800 because it ran Linux, too, though. I know how to run XP, and I have a copy on one of my computers for games, but I prefer Linux. |
Re: Just wondering!!!!
I would have considered a device that ran FreeBSD, NetBSD, or OpenBSD. I figured the embedded GUI wouldn't be as annoying as most Linux X based GUI's (and didn't expect it to be a customized version of X), so I didn't rule out Linux devices (esp. since *BSD based handhelds are rather rare). I briefly considered Symbian and Danger (sidekick) based devices. But, I completely ruled out Palm and Windows.
I basically came down to OSX vs Linux (iPhone/Touch vs N800 or PepperPad). And I correctly anticipated the mid-september massacre for OSX based devices. Decided I wanted an N800 over the PepperPad. That's how I wound up here. Haven't regretted it at all. |

Additionally, sometimes when you download software for linux, it may not be marked as executable...in other words linux may not recognize it as a runnable program. In that case you have to perform a chmod on the file : chmod +x "program" -- it can be very confusing for a linux newbie (and I hope I'm not making it worse <g>) Generally, if you stick with programs that the Application Manager offers, you won't have this problem. I don't think the NIT is ideal for learning Linux. Your best bet would be to get a Live CD like Knoppix or Ubuntu that allows you to boot into Linux from your PC w/o disrupting your normal Windows environment. |
Re: Just wondering!!!!
Imho the real question is the user interface. XP application UI's are optimized for desktop usage: large screen, keyboard, mouse, high performance available. Putting these into a small screen, no mouse, lower performance device simply won't give a good user experience, since that is not what the UI's were optimized for. I don't really see that it would make any difference even if technically the tablet could run windows xp. The UI is the key.

Re: Just wondering!!!!
For me, the fact that it runs Linux was the clincher. I have several windows based smart phones and have owned several pda's (running various Os's). Smart phones are a great idea, but I have yet to find one that I really like. (the iphone has come the closest) . The best pda I had owned was the Zaurus. That ran Linux and the wealth of apps that met my needs was nice. I left the windows world in my personal life behind when OSX was released and haven't looked back. I have no issues with carrying my IT as well as a phone. Except for some odd lag using the browser since the last firmware. I am loviing it. Can't wait for the 810 so I don't have to carry a bt gps. Finally I can use the IT on my motorcycle!!!
