If it had been windows (mobile, or xp, or vista), I wouldn't have bought my N800.

Re: Just wondering!!!!

I wasn't used to linux at all when I got my first 770, but I'd still take it over XP on the tablets. XP would just flat not run worth a darn.

Re: Just wondering!!!!

If the tablets were XP, there's no way I'd buy them. It's been 8 years since I've freed myself from Windows and I have no intention of ever going back.

Before the IT, I hated linux. I am used to _unix_, but not linux.

Re: Just wondering!!!!

If XP is/would be/could be installed ... it would run very very slowly. Remember that a common (unoptimized) XP install requires 1.5GB of drive space and 256MB of memory. Not sure if the IT with its current hardware can handle that.

Why not go for Win2k, if one insists on having "that" operating system on the Eee? I know from experience that 2k runs very nicely on 64 megs of RAM (and screams -- as far as Windows variations are capable of screaming -- on 128 MB). I can't imagine it would be that hard to find drivers for the hardware.

Sure, it's not as "polished" as XP, but honestly, I'd consider that a plus.

I bought the N800 specifically _because_ it runs Linux.

well most of u like it this way, but i was just wondering since i've been using windows all my life never used anything els only couple months ago i started with the apple its ok but still u have to get use to it and understand things how it goes,,
and the linux this is my first time only on my 770, its good but am finding a few things thats hard to understand like downloading of the internet when the installation says its completed then after that i go to my documents and try to open but i cant it says faild,,,

but am sure its not a big deal we all have to start some where,,

Re: Just wondering!!!!

Biggmo, what specific problem are you having? Downloading from the internet is kinda vague :)

Re: Just wondering!!!!

We all do, and they can be very different. :)

I got the N800 because it ran Linux, too, though. I know how to run XP, and I have a copy on one of my computers for games, but I prefer Linux.

Re: Just wondering!!!!

I would have considered a device that ran FreeBSD, NetBSD, or OpenBSD. I figured the embedded GUI wouldn't be as annoying as most Linux X based GUI's (and didn't expect it to be a customized version of X), so I didn't rule out Linux devices (esp. since *BSD based handhelds are rather rare). I briefly considered Symbian and Danger (sidekick) based devices. But, I completely ruled out Palm and Windows.

I basically came down to OSX vs Linux (iPhone/Touch vs N800 or PepperPad). And I correctly anticipated the mid-september massacre for OSX based devices. Decided I wanted an N800 over the PepperPad. That's how I wound up here. Haven't regretted it at all.

Well, as far as downloading stuff for linux, anything you d/l to use on the NIT has to be specially compiled for that platform. Something meant to run on the pc (x86) platform won't work on the Nokia. That's why we have repositories, that only include apps for our architecture.

Additionally, sometimes when you download software for linux, it may not be marked as executable...in other words linux may not recognize it as a runnable program. In that case you have to perform a chmod on the file : chmod +x "program" -- it can be very confusing for a linux newbie (and I hope I'm not making it worse <g>) Generally, if you stick with programs that the Application Manager offers, you won't have this problem.

I don't think the NIT is ideal for learning Linux. Your best bet would be to get a Live CD like Knoppix or Ubuntu that allows you to boot into Linux from your PC w/o disrupting your normal Windows environment.

Re: Just wondering!!!!

Imho the real question is the user interface. XP application UI's are optimized for desktop usage: large screen, keyboard, mouse, high performance available. Putting these into a small screen, no mouse, lower performance device simply won't give a good user experience, since that is not what the UI's were optimized for. I don't really see that it would make any difference even if technically the tablet could run windows xp. The UI is the key.

Agreed. I had the option of buying a Windows equipped Smartphone a while ago and I realised that I just don't trust Microsoft products. Microsoft's very good at packing in useful functions but, let's be honest, any Microsoft product is likely insecure and just too much trouble.

Re: Just wondering!!!!

For me, the fact that it runs Linux was the clincher. I have several windows based smart phones and have owned several pda's (running various Os's). Smart phones are a great idea, but I have yet to find one that I really like. (the iphone has come the closest) . The best pda I had owned was the Zaurus. That ran Linux and the wealth of apps that met my needs was nice. I left the windows world in my personal life behind when OSX was released and haven't looked back. I have no issues with carrying my IT as well as a phone. Except for some odd lag using the browser since the last firmware. I am loviing it. Can't wait for the 810 so I don't have to carry a bt gps. Finally I can use the IT on my motorcycle!!!

As I said, in your case, I'd stick with trusted apps in the repositories and check out learning more about Linux.

Re: Just wondering!!!!

Ok guys, I appreciate the sentiment, but I am talking about using the gps same as you would in a car. I consider myself to be a safe driver. I wear all the gear all the time. (Helmet, riding boots, back protector, elbow and knee pads. Jacket has shoulder protectors as well. Up until now I have been using the n800 with an external gps which means more things to carry as well as more things to put on/take off the bike when I stop. The n810 will make it much simpler to do just that. I am hoping to borrow a video camera to submit a video for the contest. I'm thinking this will clear things up.

i think that would be something nice to see..
cant wait ;)

Re: Just wondering!!!!

I was just teasing; I'm glad to hear you're keeping safe, though. The built-in GPS thing is one of the reasons I think I will love the N810 too, like you said, the external one just means more things to carry around.

That, and the integrated keyboard will make it easier to chat and post on forums from stoplights, too! (Kidding! ... mostly.)
