This might explain why Nokia announced the wimax N800 and then suddenly went very quiet about it. I think I'm right in saying that, outside of reviewer speculation, Nokia hasn't uttered a word about Wimax during the launch of the N810.

back to the drawing board. i'm guessing a year and a half before we see wimax starting to appear. i wonder if nokia will add wimax to their next tablet even if wimax is not available in the US.

From Engadget:

"I am an engineer with Sprint and can tell you that the WiMax build out has not stopped or slowed. The joint venture deal with Clearwire is the only thing that faded out. There are to many contracts in place with various equipment vendors (Nokia and Samsung most notably) to just scrap the entire project."

No way to confirm who this person is, but who would claim to be an engineer with Sprint if they were not?

He's right... Chicago, D.C, & some Texas markets should be just about complete. Clearwire was just part of the plan as a short cut to a nationwide system and only affected markets with Clearwire's presence I beleive.

Why, does that job rate lower than "politician"?

:p

Just a little tongue-in-cheek jab for fun. :)

(And one of the best lines from The Untouchables.)

Hm. What about the SF bay area? (I live in San Jose, and work in Santa Cruz).

The ones I mentioned were areas where I have heard or seen posts from reliable field techs or engineers...

Sprint's VP of technology development Ali Tabassi said last week in an interview and at a trade show in Boston that the company was committed to WiMax, and he laid out an ambitious rollout schedule. And in Friday's announcement, the cell phone service provider said it remained on track for a "soft launch" of its WiMax service in the Chicago and Baltimore/Washington markets and for a commercial launch of the service next year.

Nonetheless, Sprint appeared to be hedging its WiMax bet -- possibly to wait for direction from a new CEO, still to be hired -- as it stated in a release: "Sprint is reviewing its WiMax business plans and outlook, and the company expects to comment further on these topics early next year."

Sprint's major partners in the WiMax rollout include Intel, Motorola, Nokia, and Samsung. Earlier this week, Sprint participated in Google's Android announcement of a new mobile phone platform; previously Sprint indicated that various Google features would be available for its WiMax subscribers.

In addition to the challenge of deploying WiMax, Sprint is rolling out an ambitious 3G CDMA2000 nationwide network. It also has been losing subscribers at a high rate, most of them Nextel users. Earlier this week, Sprint unveiled a plan designed to improve its customer service and slow subscriber defections.

In reporting its third quarter results Friday, Clearwire said it added 49,000 net new subscribers, bringing its total subscriber base to 348,000. The company also said it had launched wireless broadband service in four new U.S. communities and in Seville, Spain. Clearwire said it was still committed to its WiMax deployment and "contemplates" migrating its current fixed wireless subscribers to mobile WiMax if and when that technology is ready.

I don't think that the "jittery" stockholders realize there are additional savings using WiMax for some of Sprint's backhaul. >> http://www.veraznetworks.com/any_switch_backhaul.aspx

Too many stockholders, as far as I can see, don't take the time to truly understand their investment. I manage two personal portfolios (IRA and 401k) and am just disgusted with what I see passing for investor intelligence in the Yahoo stock forums...

I hope Sprint sticks with this.
