@pronuke please tell me if i have a 8gb internal mmc card how do i format it? i want to be able to access the rest of the space on internal mmc from the pc like i do when i normal boot my n800.

Great job, pronuke!
As an another Linux dummy, great thanks to your contribution!
One question, though -
Isn't it a typo?

Quote:

Format Partition 1

# umount /media/mmc2 (this step is omitted from other guides)
# mke2fs /dev/mmcblk0p2
# shutdown -r now
(device will SD and Restart)
Shouldn't it be like that-

Quote:

# mke2fs /dev/mmcblk0p1

Re: Koffice ?? Its been a productive month :)

El Camino & godd,

Thanks for the thorough scrub of the instructions. I am working to fix my typos now.

I'll try to answer all I can here:

Post 119: Choose "MMC card, partition 2, ext2" to boot to SD card.
Post 120: You are correct; the lines should be:

# mv /home/user/MyDocs/.documents/KDE358.tar.bz2 /KDE358.tar.bz2
# mv /home/user/MyDocs/.documents/SUP.tar.bz2 /SUP.tar.bz2

(lines above edited to fix typo)

Post 122: You are correct; to format partition 1 use:

mke2fs /dev/mmcblk0p1

I am NOT an expert on this, so use my advice at your own risk. But heck, what's the worse that can happen, right?!

Since the OS boots from the second partition, if it was me I would try the following combination to yield ~ 6 GB on the FAT32 partition (for access to files later) and ~2 GB for the boot partition, KDE, applications, etc ...

/dev/mmcblk0p1:1,180000,6 (this is a ~6 GB FAT32 partition)
/dev/mmcblk0p2:180001,, (this is a ~2 GB Linux_83 partition)

(edited this to correct my poor math ~ 2 hrs after original post)

Anyone have expereince with this specific situation?

Pronuke any idea why I get a error when I type in "# mv /home/user/MyDocs/.documents/KDE358.tar.bz2 /KDE358.tar/bz2 and I get mv: connot rename '/home/user/MyDocs/.documents/KDE358.tar.bz2': No such file or directory

2. Begging for an ASUS EEEPC
3. "Yes dear, the Nokia is still working fine... I use it every day, really"

My post was all screwed up. I fixed it - go back and take a look at it now. I also fixed the html version.

Sorry...my mistake! I hope it didn't cause you too much wasted time! That's what I get for doing too many things at once!

ok thanks will try it when I get home. So should it be like this? mv /home/user/MyDocs/.documents/KDE358.tar.bz2 .KDE358.tar/bz2 sorry for all these questions first Nokia N800 and don't know to much about how this works.

Re: Koffice ?? Its been a productive month :)

Pronuke is this correct from your instructions?
# cd /
# /tar-temp/bin/tar jxvf KDE358.tar.bz2 (takes ~30 minutes)
# /tar-temp/bin/tar jxvf SUP.tgz (takes ~15 minutes)

When I type the first one I get a error that says.
/tar-temp/bin/tar: Error is not recoverable: exiting now
/tar-temp/bin/tar: Child returned status 2
/tar-temp/bin/tar: Error exit delayed from previous errors

anyone know what to do? Yet so close to finishing this up. Thanks again.

Ok I ran this "apt-get install bzip2" and now its loading up. :)

Got everything loaded Thanks Pronuke for your help. Is there a way to speed this up. Also is there a way to install Adobe Flash Player I downloaded it but don't know how to install it. Just started to use this N800 1 week and half ago. Thanks.

anidel 2008-01-08 11:58

Re: Koffice ?? Its been a productive month :)

Pronuke in your instructions you forgot to tell people about bzip2.
They need to download it from the penguinbait website and run it as follows:

cd /
<path where downlaoded>/bzip2 -dc KDE358.tar.bz2 | tar xf -

Moreover with my freshly flashed n800 with OS2008 I was not able to install e2fsprogs.
Double check it. I had to make the partitions using my Linux box.

Also, after the step to unmount MMC2, whenever I try to partition it (by means of sfdisk), the tablet was always detecting and mounting back the MMC.

E2fsprogs is in the '07 catalog, but I used it on my n810 for partitioning. Installs and works fine.

If you mean by speeding the KDE and SUP process, you really don't have to use the 400 mhz Nokia. If you have a Linux box, you can untar it on your SD card. When I decided to join the KDE on the N800/N810 community, I used my Slackware 12.0 Linux box to partition the SD card and untar KDE and SUP packages. It was really fast. You don't have to wait (KDE) 30 + (SUP) 15 = 45 minutes when using your PC. Just a note.

As far as installing Adobe Flash Player, I'm on the same boat as well. I know that if I want Adobe Flash Player on my Slackware, I look for a package. Maybe if we can find a .deb package, we should be able to install in via command line? I'm not sure if it will work, but its worth a try.

Linux RULEZ!!!

I thought there was a problem with the fonts in microb? with size, I am starting to think there is no problem with microb. Can someone explain if they have had a problem what it is?

Yeah I posted a very similar fix a while back (post #66). So be sure to take this into account.

Also, I think it's important for N810 users to know that they will have to add a modified bootmenu.conf file to their init_flasher directory prior to flashing or they won't be able to actually boot. You can either make your own Fanoush included some samples in the tarball for the flasher or you can use mine that I've posted here

I can attest that fonts in microb do infact get messed after installing KDE - more specifically I'm pretty sure it was after install the SUP. When I last flashed I checked the web browser each step along the way and that's when I noticed it b0rken.

Basically, microb just opens with monospaced/courier looking font on all web pages. I was able to work around this by installing some .ttf fonts and changing my about:config.

I go to webpages and then reflash and they look the same. Can you give me specific sites which show this?

Anyone?

Also 1 question, when you made your backup of your OS, what version of tar did you use? Did you download tar and call it with path?

My homepage for one shows up with the bad font, it's http://pda.finagle.org The text on the buttons works OK but the text for the links is messed up.

As for when I cloned my OS I used the following steps by Millhouse:

Code:

Cloning the Operating System to Internal SD/MMC Card

7. Download and execute the following script and binary
* The following commands will download the cloning script and the GNU tar binary to assist with the cloning process

As user "user"
      mkdir ~/bin
      cd ~/bin
      wget http://www.nmacleod.com/nokia/bin/nupgrade.sh
      wget http://www.nmacleod.com/nokia/bin/tar
      chmod +x nupgrade.sh tar

As user "root"

    * Switch to the root superuser and begin the process of cloning the filesystem to partition two on the Internal memory card. This is achieved in stages to allow you to control progress and check for errors. Pass parameters to the nupgrade.sh script to control progress, as follows
o 0 - Create ext2 filesystem on partition 2 of the Internal memory card
          o 1 - Mount partition 2 as /opt
          o 2 - Mount rootfs as /floppy
          o 3 - Perform cloning process
          o 4 - Commit filesystem updates and unmount /floppy and /opt

  Code:

      sudo gainroot
      cd /home/user/bin
      ./nupgrade.sh 0
      ./nupgrade.sh 1
      ./nupgrade.sh 2
      ./nupgrade.sh 3
      ./nupgrade.sh 4
      reboot

Does that help at all?

I can tell you though that when I had first cloned the OS before any installation of KDE at all - the fonts were working in microb. I specifically checked - that's the only reason I reflashed in the first place.

Now I guess I personally don't mind because I'm using Konqueror 100% of the time - but others might not like it. :)

PCQ, I really really appreciate your help, my questions are only to verify the problem, so I can then figure out how to fix it.

I was just curious about the tar, if tar on tablet is used /bin/tar, there are known issues with FONTS.

Reinstalling KDE again to test, god I wish I had two of these

Right, I totally understand about the tar thing - I had read about the tablet tar being an issue with fonts too. I should add that just to be sure when I untarred KDE and SUP I used the GNU tar with those too just incase :o

I totally and completely appreciate all you've done - my N810 with KDE installed is hands down the best damn handheld device I've ever owned :D and I've owned 7 (mostly Palms and a couple of Zaurus').

Penquinbait has a shortcut from KDE to Maemo Control Panel in the system tray by default - it the icon that looks like a wrench. If you tap that icon you can then turn on BT from the control panel. Another option is to install switchOnBT and then run that from the command line as root.

For the majority of Maemo apps I've set up shortcuts to them on my KDE desktop. I wish I could get the permissions for a switchOnBT desktop shortcut done right then I could just tap an icon and have it launch for me. Not sure what I'm doing wrong.

Kstars has always been included with KDE, its KDE?

But I must say, its probably not the fastest KDE app on the tablet!

Running KDE is a pretty wild capability... thank you penguinbait and everyone else.

Is there something to do screen size settings-wise to be able to prevent some dialogs from being displayed larger than the physical screen? It's tough to configure some settings when the prefs panel is bigger than the screen because the Apply button is south of the border. Most times I can drag the panel above the screen top via the multi-desktop tool but not always. Going to display settings or screen resolution settings fails because it says my x server won't support resizing.

??
Thank you,
Frank

See my post here: http://www.internettablettalk.com/fo...t=14680&page=9 & see post #88 and an alternative in post #92 (sorry something is wrong with hyperlinks on the forums right now) where there's answers to pretty much the same question - it's not an absolute fix (not resizing windows) but I find mine a very acceptable work around :D.

PCQ,

Thank you once again. I had missed Westy's original question when I looked through that thread yesterday.... wow, a lot got added since then!

I like the map the key to window move idea. I had been doing the virtual desktop thing but it can be a drag trying to move a window a tiny bit.

Yes all I need is the desktop file and if you have any icons, but I suspect you used hildons so should only need .desktop files :)

OK, FOR DIALOGS OFF THE SCREEN USE THE PAGER IN THE TASKBAR.

You can drag windows to other desktops, you can also move windows within a desktop. So you can drag the window up on the pager and it will go up on the screen giving you access to the bottom of the window.

Ok - I'll email you the .desktop files :) I can also instruct people how to make them for themselves, they're really easy to make ;) The hardest part is figuring out what command to use to launch from xterm.

As for use the pager to move windows around - while I appreciate the option, I actually prefer to do it using the button because I only use one desktop and don't even have the pager active in my panel. :o You can also move and/or resize windows by tapping on the little icon in the top left corner of the Title Bar and selecting the appropriate action.

To sum it up... There are many paths that lead to the same destination :) Having KDE allows us to each choose our own path - that's a really good thing :D

You do realize all the buttons on the tablet were already mapped to KDE uses.

The menu button brings up hildons menus (when in full screen)

The zoom+ and zoom- both work in konq and konsole to increase or decrease font size.

The fullscreen button makes windows fullscreen.

The home button switches desktops, if you had any :)

Once I have reflashed 2008 do I can get to my 2008 partition, I will re-try KDE.

Is there a way to change the colours? It comes up a rather funky purple and green on my screen and I'd rather the more restrained stuff I use on the desktop. kcontrol didn't appear to work so I couldn't use that.
