* Added history-combo to save playlist dialog
* Added playlist shuffling/randomization, removed random playback mode
* Added Settings menu to group settings together
* Added Auto-play toggle to Settings menu
* Added Genres screen
* Album/Artist/Genre lists now show item counts
* Now Playing cover image fallback, to show the artist image if no cover found
* Option to choose between artist or album images in Now Playing button and Cover screen
* Added year display to album list
* Added sort by year option to Settings
* Startup time improvements
* Added confirmation dialog to Playlist Clear button
* Scanner now ignores hidden files and directories
* Delete playlist option to Playlists screen
* Chinook installation and operation fixes

* Added headset button support to toggle playback (Chinook only)
* Added sleep timer activation notification
* Turn off screen option removed, will be back in a later version
* Added DBus signals for playback notifications

Everyone currently running a previous version should upgrade as this release is an all around better performer.

I get this

I have seen this elsewhere when trying to install UKMP so I guess it an issue that will be fixed in time.

Was there going to be a way to get the green theme back again, or is that going to be in a later release?

Does it mean that it's possible for another application (say, maemo mapper), to stop playback and then resume it?
I looked in svn some days ago and that feature seemed incomplete.

So, for now, in order to get Python 2.5 installed, if you're running Chinook, you'll need to:

[1]added lines in /etc/apt/sources.list
deb http://repository.maemo.org chinook free non-free
deb http://repository.maemo.org/extras chinook free non-free

See this email for more info:

I've been getting that for about an hour. Any chance of some direct links?

It's only notifications (playback started, volume updated, current track info, that kind of thing) you can't control it using dbus yet. But you can control kagu using the remote (exec "kagu -remote <command>" functionality. (See remote.py)

Do you want to expand on that? I'm not a programmer, but I can troubleshoot. Does this program possibly conflict with any others? I uninstalled most, if not all of the other programs installed since Kagu used to work. It still goes through the scan and then to the main screen but does not allow screen taps, just sits there, unresponsive. I really like this as my main music player and don't really want to reinstall everything.

Thanks for that. Great result, Kagu has installed from Application Manager - Browse Installable Applications.

My ogg files now play perfectly. Earlier I had installed Ogg-Support and whether that is responsible or not I am not sure.

The problem with that is that pause is a toggle, there's no separate resume command, so if you want to pause from another application and kagu is already paused, music will start, i.e. the opposite effect of what you wanted.

Re: Kagu Media Player 1.0.10 Released!

We have issued an update (1.0.10-2) to fix a crash while playing songs with "track#" info missing in their id3. It's uploaded to maemo garage, and various repositories (bora/chinook/gregale) are being updated so it will appear in your Application Manager soon.

@luca:
This update also provides new remote commands:
"kagu -remote set_pause" to really pause playback (not toggle)
"kagu -remote play" to unpause playback
"kagu -remote volume_up" and "kagu -remote volume_down" for volume adjustments.

First two commands should come in handy configuring maemo-mapper to stop kagu music before flite announcements.

Re: Kagu Media Player 1.0.10 Released!

Have successfully updated my Kagu by downloading latest version (1.0.10.2) without a problem. However, have found very curious (but readily reparable, I assume) feature which I'm certain other users also will be quick to notice and point out:

Album title listings identify and label, in addition to the names of the albums, the number of tracks on each album -- but calling them "songs." It might, perhaps, be slightly useful to some users to give the number of tracks on each album, but not to label them as "songs" (even if they sometimes are). In my case, they're usually movements in classical compositions or chapters in books.

Anyway, again my appreciation to all responsible for the hard work and constant improvements in this already splendid and most useful application.

Re: Kagu Media Player 1.0.10 Released!

I would like to offer up a note of minor caution to those users of Kagu who in the past have sought to exclude search paths by editing their /usr/lib/kagu/globals.py file (line "path_a).

I have found that the current update to Kagu returns the previous default "path_a" to this file, thereby scanning into Kagu some possibly unwanted items upon the intitial rescanning required by the update.

My suggestion to those who have previously edited their "path_a" to exclude some search paths, is to go back into /usr/lib/kagu/globals.py and re-edit "path_a" back to the way you want it, prior to running a rescan.

All is not lost, however, if you've rescanned without performing this re-edit: you can do the re-edit afterward then run a complete scan.

I get a freeze as well... and I just installed today (11/18). I love Kagu, and I've tried everything my linux-deficient brain could think of to fix the problem. Freezes every time right when the music/nowplaying/settings list pops up. Everything up to that point seems to be working, including a full scan.

I'll be looking for the next update and am going to be a bit lost without Kagu at work tomorrow...

Have you tried rebooting the tablet? We've seen a few of these issues, but they're usually not Kagu. They're issues with the tablet doing odd things. Try a reboot (pull the battery) and see if that helps.

Worked like a charm... I'd rebooted several times... why doesn't it reboot completely without pulling the battery? thanks a bunch

No clue. Just the way these tablets are.

It reboots fully so long as you do not have the charger plugged in. When the charger is in, it basically locks the screen and goes into offline mode.

Re: Kagu Media Player 1.0.10 Released!

Just updated to the latest Kagu - and wanted to say a massive thank you to Trevarthan and all the Team involved for implementing the sort by year option - fantastic - all albums now in their correct release order:D

I'd also like to echo ascherjim's request to re-label 'songs' to 'tracks' as I too have quite a mix of audio media such as audiobooks and ambient pieces that aren't really songs per se...

One final question - will custom artist image be implemented in a future release, maybe via a artist.jpeg stored in the relevant folder?

Keep up the excellent work - I've shown Kagu to a number of people now and it never fails to impress. The standard response (after the initial 'wows' & 'cool') is "wow, it's just like an iphone" - to which I always reply, "no, it's better";)

Re: Kagu Media Player 1.0.10 Released!

After a reinstall of the latest 2007he on my 770, this still does not work. As mentioned before, it hangs at the first screen. I think it is because I modded the flash drive (see my past posts) and ever since then, my headphone jack hasn't worked. If this latest version is checking for headphones, it may be hanging. I'll have to look into what exactly I broke when I modded it.

hehe, yes it does:D

I'm not want to gloat - I just like to point out that similar technology has been around for a few years (even if Kagu & UKMP haven't) and that the iphone isn't (quite) as innovative as most internet pundits seem to believe...

In the event that this is currently being perceived as not a matter of sufficient concern to most of the Kagu users for the developers to deal with at this time -- as a short-run solution for those of us bothered by the matter, can you inform ClockworkCar and me whether there are any Kagu files on our N800's that we can edit, replacing the word "songs" with "tracks?" Thanks and regards, Jim

Re: Kagu Media Player 1.0.10 Released!

After upgrading from 1.0.9 to 1.0.10, I found that Kagu would stop after playing just the first track from my playlist. Is anyone else seeing this? It may be relevant that all my tracks are Ogg Vorbis.

So, to be precise, if I:
- start Kagu with an empty playlist (because I cleared it before quitting the previous time)
- go into an album
- press the button to add all tracks to the playlist,
then in 1.0.9, Kagu played all the album tracks in sequence; in 1.0.10, it plays the first, then silence.

Perhaps I'm missing some new option in the UI?

Re: Kagu Media Player 1.0.10 Released!

Strange, but this happened to me too.

I added a few MP3 songs and Ogg (i have both in mt card) and while the songs skipped properly for the mp3's some of the OGG files played, and few just did not.

I remember when I ripped the songs, that I didnt start the song from the blank silence portion - rather the song starts off with a sound bit (at the 0 track location). Might that be the problem ?

I wouldn't exactly label it as "urgent", but yeah, we've taken action on it. See this commit for what changed: http://kagumedia.com/projects/kagu/changeset/750

It'll be in the next release.

Erg. no, doesn't happen to me. try power cycling the device with the battery taken out. If that doesn't help, send us a few audio samples or something. Doesn't match anything I've seen yet.

Your install file is broken: http://maemo.org/downloads/product/r...et_installfile

There's a typo in the uri.

Same goes for the 2008 version (repostory rather than repository in both cases). I've not tried the os2006 version.

Trevarthan (and Associates): I am concerned that you all currently are running out of steam and, in addition, perhaps relatedly, have resigned yourselves to giving up the N800 (and N810) media player field to the upcoming new version of Canola. If this is so, I (and perhaps a good number of others) find it quite upsetting. You have such a good product (of course, not without flaws) with excellent features, which could be significantly improved with probably not too much further application on your parts. (Easy for me to say, of course!)

My frustrations are over my current inabilities to edit and organize my album texts and playlists. Your organizing and listings of albums are apparently so dependent on initial id tags, which often result in seemingly arbitrary listings and itemizations. The "genre" addition to your last update is for me a disaster, as the genres accompanying albums are frequently illogical and thus contribute to rather useless genre categorizations, i.e., "Classical" and Classique" depending on the country and language of the album's origin.

In order to edit the id tags in an attempt to bring some order and rationalization to the Kagu listings, one has to go to external id tag editing applications, which for me are not all that user-friendly. And even then such editings are not always accurately picked up in the Kagu rescanning process. (And my genre renamings are never picked up.) Where there are inconsistencies in the album listings, I have attempted to create playlists which would compensate for these inconsistencies. But while I can edit the names of individual playlists by going into the MyDocs/.sounds directory, if I try to reorganize them by placing them in sub-directories under different genre categories, the Kagu scanning process apparently fails to pick-up these genre sub-categories, which results in Kagu crashing when I attempt to use the Playlist designated listing from within Kagu.

I do not wish you to regard the above "flaws" I am identifying in the current Kagu application as a total dissatisfaction with Kagu on my part. You have been able to make incremental changes in the past which have always resulted in significant improvements. I believe that the items I identify above, which I would like to see dealt with in future versions, are those which can readily be accommodated.

My best wishes for the future are with you all, as is my continuing appreciation for your fine product.
