The case for a case...
I wanted to share my story with you.
This morning, I went out to grab some carry out from a local restaurant for the family. Knowing there are several hotspots nearby, I grabbed my n800 on the way out the door. I glanced at the feltish cover. I looked at the PSP case I bought. I said "eh, I'll be ok". , and dropped my n800 into the pocket of my sweater. As I climbed out of the car, MY N800 WENT FLYING!!! I took a breath, looked down and say my n800 lying there face up, and the faceplate 6 inches away and buttons a foot and a half away! It all went back together easy enough, and I only suffered a couple of minor scratches on the bottom corners of the unit. She works fine (as good as new), and I even used it while waiting for my food. I guess the moral of the story is "USE PROTECTION KIDS!" Things are never really yours until you drop them at least once anyway. Glad I survived. Learn from my mistake. |
Re: The case for a case...
This one is a lifesaver for me.. It is perfect because I can have the headset with wire under my sweater down to the N800 so I could listen to radio/mp3 all day at work :)

Re: The case for a case...
I'm still looking for a working case, my GP2x case fits the N800 but is very bulky; I think I may have to splash out and buy a boxwave (if I can find a EU reseller) or the official cover from Nokia Ireland because the stupid "sock" is really pissing me off.

Re: The case for a case...
I picked up a PSP case on geeks.com for about $5. Works like a charm. when I use it :)

GBP is Great Britain Pounds, a currency rather than a brand.

Re: The case for a case...
In another thread I posted about the Case Logic GPS1 which nicely fits the N800 and offers good protection (it's meant for GPS navigators).

Re: The case for a case...
I ordered this case . I'm awaiting delivery sometime next week.

Re: The case for a case...
I'm very happy with the Nokia case (the leather one that uses magnets to hold the front and back on), it's nice and sleek and can be left on at all times.
I just wish there was a window for the LED, or LEDS on the side of the N800 so I could quickly see if I've missed a call/got a message/etc. Got it for $30 from buy.com, a bit more than I wanted to spend, but I couldn't find anything better for my liking. Re: The case for a case...
As we see from the original post, it doesn't matter what case you have if you leave it at home.
Also, the offical case and some others would probably not have protected the N800 from the flying leap it took from the OPs shirt pocket. |

I'm not sure how much it would protect the device in a flying leap, but at least I wouldn't have to worry about the front or back getting scratched, heheh. I'm pretty darn careful with my things, otherwise I'd probably have opted for a hard metal case with lots of padding inside :) |
Re: The case for a case...
I have to recommend the proporta alu-leather case: http://www.proporta.com/F02/PPF02P05...260&t_mode=des
http://www.proporta.com/resizeimage....=310px&h=345px I have been using it in the last months and it is very protective and practical to use. |

Re: The case for a case...
I got this case from Waterfield and love it. It's a nice looking case and give me the protection I was looking for. Some one on this board recommended it and it was perfect.

Re: The case for a case...
My skin-style case, which is minimal, might have prevented your N800 slide because its rubberized surface resists sliding. Because it is minimal, I have no temptation to ever remove it. It cost me about $10 from ebay including shipping. The only drawback is the stand doesn't work with the skin on.

Re: The case for a case...
My advice, don't use the official case.
1. it offers no protection for the edges/sides 2. When I dropped my N800 onto concrete, the case flew off, the back flew off and I ended up with a nasty ding on the edge. I love the Proporta case. It is a little wider than the N800 so it would protect the edges in a fall. It magnetically "snaps" shut. It has its own stand. The down side... You can't get to the external memory slot or the USB connector while the N800 is in the case, and it is difficult to remove the stylus. The top of the case does flex backwards to aid in getting to the stylus, but it's still a pain. With that said, I still think it's the best case for my usage. |
Re: The case for a case...
Has anyone using proporta case tried removing kickstand completely to allow access to usb and sd slot while still in the case?

Well for 99p, it's worth a punt. Thanks for that, consider one sold :) |
Re: The case for a case...
Believe it or not, I just got out of my car and dropped my E62!
A skin case would definitely have provided some grab in the sweater pocket (it's like a cardigan style pocket) and saved the day. |

Re: The case for a case...
The Proporta Case is a very good case, indeed. My N800 feels so much safer in there.

Re: The case for a case...
I too have a skin case bought from Hong Kong off ebay for 4 dollars with 4 more for shipping. For me it is the perfect solution - it wont slide around and keeps the package size to a minimum. Besides, at just 230 dollars for a new n800, I'll take my chances.

Found an interesting case for $15.

Re: The case for a case...
I love the leather case I purchased on eBay for my 770:
http://www.visi.com/~rsteiner/770case.jpg It was something like US$18, and well worth it. Nice cushioning, and it leaves all access ports available including the stylus and the RS-MMC card port. Whether they make a similar case for the 8xx models I have no idea, but for 770's this case is a very good way to go. IMO. :D |
Re: The case for a case...
Yeh that Proporta case looks very nice, though wasn't avail. when I got my N800. I got a Case Logic case at the same time I bought my IT and it fits the N800 with pouch, then in the top portion it hase a small net which holds my headphones and USB sync cable as well, and was only $20 US.
Though I've yet to perform an actual "drop test" thankfully.. |

Re: The case for a case...
I bought Case Logic PDA case for my N800 but don't find much use for it. At home, I don't feel like needing it and when going out, it becomes too bulky to carry. But protection against accidental damage is very important, perhaps I will be able to find a sleek, metal case for N800 sometime.

Re: The case for a case...
If you don't want it, I'll buy it from ja.

Re: The case for a case...
The nice thing about a skin case is that it feels natural; you don't ever want to take it off except when necessary, like to change batteries. Nokia would have been smart to buy a bunch of them and include them with the N800. The only problem is that you can't use the stand. But to me, the stand is cool but dispensible.
I have now decided that a screen protector would be a good thing, because my stylus has creared a wear spot along the right where the browser scroll bar is. I can't see it in most lighting conditions, but I know it's there. |
Re: The case for a case...
Went into GameStop last night, and got a (brand unknown) psp case from their used accessories for $5. I guess that just goes to prove that you never know what you'll find until you ask!
