I tried this nice tool to convert some movies to rmvb format and they work great. You can find the details here:

Not sure if it supports direct rip of DVD's but it definitely supports a lot of video format.

It can also convert some non-Nokia 770 playable rmvb files to playable ones.

Out of curiosity, what are the file sizes like in comparison to an .AVI file?

I encoded one move for about 95 mins with 288x128pixels. it's about 130MB.
