Help Seting Up VNC......!?!
 

Hye guys, i just got my N800 about an hour ago, and i need to know how to setup VNC to view my desktops docs......what do they mean when i start it by VNC server?.....IP address?

There are two pieces to VNC: a viewer and a server. If you want to see your PC desktop from your tablet then install a VNC viewer on the tablet and a VNC server on the PC.

(Note: don't upgrade to OS2008 just yet... the VNC client doesn't work).

There are many VNC servers available for PC. I prefer TightVNC but UltraVNC is also good, and there are others.

When you have both pieces installed, start the viewer on the tablet and it asks for an IP address... it needs to know where your PC is. On the PC you can hover over the VNC icon in your system tray and it will show the PC address. Enter that on the tablet and with any luck you'll get connected.

(If they are not both on the same network then you need to know the public IP address of the PC and you may have to do some port forwarding on the router at the PC end... but that's an advanced topic.)

So, regarding VNC, TightVNC and UltraVNC will connect me to the server, but will I see what the local client would see (I mean on a UNIX box)? Or would I need x11vnc for that? Which would let me be on the same session as someone physically at the computer? I'm a little confused about how this works.

You really are a little confused.. I'm not sure I even understand the question.

x11vnc is the server app for the tablet. You should be able to connect to it with any VNC viewer software on any Windows/Mac/Linux machine and see the tablet desktop.

If that doesn't answer your question, then instead of guessing at apps just say what it is you really want to do.

On re-reading your post, I think what you are asking is: What would you see on the tablet viewer if you use it to connect to a VNC server running on a Unix box. I don't have any experience with that, sorry.

I suspect you'd see what a user sitting at the monitor would see. But if you research the 'net for info on VNC server software for Unix you'll probably find the information you want.

This sounded like micro$oft's remote desktop, allow one to control a desktop remotely as if he/she is physically at the desktop, right? VNC is quite similar. Both VNC and remote desktop have client and server. client and server are quite confusing at 1st look, just immagine client/server relationship is similar to customer/waiter. Waiter has food/desk/restaurant while customer is using the waiter's facility, so to speak, the client is using the server's facility.

On a somewhat related note, is anyone working on getting a VNC client working on OS 2008? With the integrated keyboard, the N810 is suddenly a much better option for those who need to remotely admin servers. The RDesktop client works on my n810, btw.

With the posts in the ITT I've been able to setup TightVNC server to my PC (Windows XP) and VNCViewer to my N800 (OS2008 updgraded). I'm able to connect and view the desktop, but I can't control it - so the question is:

How to control remote desktop with VNC Viewer in N800? I can see the Windows mouse pointer in N800 display but not use it.

Clicking on the touchscreen should move the mouse pointer and generate a left-click.

With x11vnc, you see the currently running session as if you were physically in front of the remote screen

For the terminology, a server gives a service. A client is a customer to the service.
One machine (one IP address ) can host multiple server. Do differentiate them, exist the concept of TCP/UDP (which is one layer over IP) ports. As there are 65535 TCP ports, one machine can host 65535 services (==server applications).
A server application is then reachable by IP:Port

x11vnc is a server that gives 1 service: it exposes the current running screen.
As it's talking its own protocol on top of TCP/IP, you need a customer client program that talks the same language: tightvnc, ultravnc,..

Thanks, that's what I thought :confused: But trying to click on the N800 screen only shows a black dot, and doesn't move the mouse or generate a left-click - believe I've tried...

Any ideas of any setup or similar that may be the cause?

Junior - I don't use TightVNC but UltraVNC (and that setup works perfectly with N770 vnc viewer).

There is an option in Ultravnc to disable viewers input. Don't know if tight has the same options, but worth checking that you haven't enabled something similar by accident on your server...

Thanks again. Couldn't really find that option in TighVNC, so I just installed UltraVNC and it seems to work.

So I'm here with an XP box running WinVNC (UltraVNC).
It's hardwired to my router.
My freshly updated N810 is connected wifi to the router.
If I VNC Viewer to the PCs ethernet IP address, all works.
However, if I connect wifi ad-hoc directly to the PC,
VNC Viewer comes back with Can't Connect.
It doesn't get as far as asking for the VNC password.
This does work from a Palm Tungsten C.

WIFIINFO on the N810 doesn't show an IP address in ad-hoc mode,
just shows what look like the mac addresses.

Edit- just got it working.
I'll post anyway for the next guy.
Wifi Info gave me the key.
I needed to specify an IP address in one of the Connections widget submenus.
Connection locks up superfast, and the screen looks great.
This has been just a concept for several years with my Tungsten C.
At last there's a handheld with enough screen to make it work.

I had a tungsten C has a gift. After 1 month of using it and fed up with my daily software resets and poor support from palm, it's now taking dust somewhere in my house.
Anything interesting to do with it? A bit off-topic sorry..

Same as suggested in post #2. I don't know of any apps that run on the N800 but not on the N810.
