I already asked somewhere else, sorry.. but is there a way to see the details of the POIs (description) without the slightly annoying process of long tap -> POI -> View-edit ?
I have some details such as phone numbers in my POIs and I wish I could access them easily thx |
Re: Maemo Mapper v2.2 for OS2006/OS2007/OS2008
Thanks gnuite!, it worked like a charm. Little slow to load the tiles though, but i guess its a server problem.

Re: Maemo Mapper v2.2 for OS2006/OS2007/OS2008
Please help as I have tried but failed to fix my installation of maemo mapper on my n800 with 0s2008. Each time I start up mapper all I see is a black screen with a white dot (which I can move around) and a black and white line which also moves around. I was able to see googlemaps the other day but now nothing. I have uninstalled and reinstalled to no avail.

Re: Maemo Mapper v2.2 for OS2006/OS2007/OS2008
Please ignore my previous post as I have now managed to download maps to correct memory device and all is working. I had to delete all previous files as the program was not looking in the correct place for the maps.

Re: Maemo Mapper v2.2 for OS2006/OS2007/OS2008
It's a great asset, all these people discussing this wonderful gadget, at the same time it is it's own downfall, for I have now spent several hours today reading, cross-reading and re-reading what feels like MBs of html on this forum, yet are none much wiser :0)
What I reckon is missing is the MM primer, that takes newbies around the whole world of MM in a minute (and don't come with the "quick help on first run", because I did read it, and it's not what I mean ¦¬] ) For example, there seem to be people out there who are using MM1.4 on OS2008. If someone who is not ideologically involved in this schism could write a gentle article on the pros and cons for each, that'd be lovely for confused little ones! Is PC-based download for either (or both?) of those versions possible, reliable? I thought I found the answers to these and other questions, but often found another superseding post later. An up to date collections of such issues would be great! The main reason for reading my eyes out was that until very recently I used to own a N770, and MM on it was lovely when it worked! However, almost every time that I tried to download more than 1 or 2 MB of maps in one go, it would crash out at some point, and take all other running apps with it. So I repented, only ever used MM on it's own - still vanishes while downloading maps. So for various reasons I recently bought a brand spanking new N800. Flashed the latest OS2008 + Installed MM2.4.1. Guess what? Downloading maps crashes the application! All the cards have sufficient memory. I am being a good boy, not running anything else in the background. I am not plugged in, running off battery (the whole idea of a mobile device is that it is mobile, non? Anyway, the N770 certainly did the vanishing trick with plug in power too). Is this a simple issue that I have merely managed to miss while trawling through these monster threads? Or is this a bug, shall I file it? I know that I am not the only one with this problem, but finding it after two days with my brand new 800 makes me wonder whether I am doing something incredibly stupidly wrong? Last not least what is really making me angry is that every time it does the vanishing act, it sets the map coordinates for the download to my current position! Please, please, gnuite, could you enable some kind of memory here, so that it remembers the last requested coordinates? Even if it did not crash, quite often I try some large scale maps first, and then think "go on, I'll have one set of closer tiles" - but then I have to type in all the coordinates again, even with a bluetooth keyboard that is a pain! Only other apps installed so far is sdict with japanese dictionaries, ssh server and client and ... that's it! Thanks a lot to all and sundry for all the effort! joe |
Re: Maemo Mapper v2.2 for OS2006/OS2007/OS2008
gnuite please can u tell me how flite_1[1].3_armel.deb can works on my n800 os2008! i installed it but when go for my map (Tehran,Iran),it said nothing!?
|
Re: Maemo Mapper v2.2 for OS2006/OS2007/OS2008
All flite does is announce directions (i.e. "Turn left at Main Street") as you approach waypoints. It doesn't text-to-speech any of the text on the map.

Re: Maemo Mapper v2.2 for OS2006/OS2007/OS2008
I've tried to do some searches for this, but how do I download all the maps for the east coast or any other region in advance?
I have an 8GB card in my N810, and would like the freedom to simply roam without updating as I go. |
Re: Maemo Mapper v2.2 for OS2006/OS2007/OS2008
Get the area you want to download filling the screen, Menu, Maps, Manage Maps. Select the zoom levels you want, and the area defaults to the area you see. Select OK, and wait awhile.

I have been able to get it to establish a gps fix with Carman and other gps programs(on laptop). I've actually been trying to get this to work on and off for 5 or 6 months without much luck. Quitting when I get too frustrated. Being able to use my N800 as a GPS would be awesome. Thanks for any info/suggestions |
Re: Maemo Mapper v2.2 for OS2006/OS2007/OS2008
According to what I read, Google satellite allows greater zoom level and higher clarity images but the problem is that, no matter how hard I tried, I couldn't use Google Satellite in maemo-mapper. I tried couple extra URLs but still got the message failed to download maps message. So i was wondering if anyone can help me with this thanks..

Re: Maemo Mapper v2.2 for OS2006/OS2007/OS2008
MM is such a great ap for the IT, Thanks.
I was wondering about the database compact feature. Every time I try to use it on a repository that has more than just a few maps downloaded, it eventually crashes MM, and often corrupts the whole database. I imagine it is simply running out of memory. I don't have virtual memory turned on, which I'm sure makes the problem worse, but I am a little worried about wearing out flash memory with it. In fact I just trashed out an SD card while doing a database compact! So perhaps there was a lot of writing going on there too. So I wonder if it is possible to copy the whole db file to a PC (I have many running Linux) and compact the database there using some SQL-Lite compatible utility, then copy it back? If so, how do you do it? I also use the IT and MM while hiking in mountains. I then do screen shots of our tracks on top of various maps and send them to others that were on the hike. A feature request would be an altitude gain/loss along a track. |

Re: Maemo Mapper v2.2 for OS2006/OS2007/OS2008
First of all, thanks for the GREAT app. MaemoMapper is rapidly becoming my favorite navigation tool, even over my all-in-one TomTom GO700 (which I've spend a small fortune upgrading and updating over the past few years). I'm this close >_< to giving the TomTom to my teenagers.
Question: I searched and browsed through the thread, as well as the Help file, but I didn't find anything relevant, so I'll ask it here: Click for screenshot (sorry for the link, but the embedded image option of this forum doesn't seem to work???) The above screenshot of MM on my N810 shows that when I start to type in an address for a route where I've been before, that address is suggested to me. In the above example, there's only one suggestion, but sometimes there's more than one. Anyway, how do I select what is suggested in the list? I've tried tab (from the onscreen keyboard since there isn't one on the hardware keyboard), the D-pad, Enter, and all the other usual methods for this, but I can't get it to work. It sure would be a lot easier than typing it all in again. Is this a little bug on the N810 (because of the hardware keyboard)? Thanks, -- Chris |
Re: Maemo Mapper v2.2 for OS2006/OS2007/OS2008
Hi, is there a way to use maemo mapper without the need to be connected to internet?
I don't really see how I can use it as GPS if I need to have internet to download maps and to download the route or POI that I'm looking for  !! I hope, I'm missing something. If not, could you advise me with an other software to use the GPS (except the Nokia map application which is not free) Thank you for the help. |

If you need to adjust your route on the hoof you'll need to be able to tether to your phone or will just need to use another gps option like tomtom or garmin. |
Re: Maemo Mapper v2.2 for OS2006/OS2007/OS2008
Sorry if this has been asked but I tried loading some GPX route (directions) files from Bing (formerly Live Maps), was able to save it and transfer it... well no route shows. I also tried http://gpx.geotags.com/ for Google Maps but no route shows, and I can't get Google Maps to download (I prefer Bing anyway...), seems their URL is always changing in some way?

Re: Maemo Mapper v2.2 for OS2006/OS2007/OS2008
I got google maps to download. The only one that keeps changing is the satellite images. They're hording those like dragon gold.
|
Re: Maemo Mapper v2.2 for OS2006/OS2007/OS2008
Lord Raiden, did you have to re-create the Google Maps (regular not satellite) database? I've never been able to get it to work with an existing sqlite database.

Re: Maemo Mapper v2.2 for OS2006/OS2007/OS2008
I started a fresh database and built it on the tablet over a 2 day period, and when it was done it worked. Someone had posted a script here that supposedly built the necessary database, but everytime I loaded it into maemo mapper, it complained that it was invalid. I got someone looking into that for me, so that little problem should get fixed soon.

Re: Maemo Mapper v2.2 for OS2006/OS2007/OS2008
Can anyone help me with a database problem in Maemo mapper? I posted my problem in this thread here. In short, Maemo Mapper is saving everything in gdbm instead of sqlite3 like it should, and it keeps saying that it doesn't recognize sqlite3 formated databases.

Re: Maemo Mapper v2.2 for OS2006/OS2007/OS2008
Is there a download limit for the maps. I am using VE hybrid and I've got so far 2gb of maps on my sd card. I have plenty of room for more but, I can't seem to download any more maps and Maemo Mapper keep crashing each time I try to.
|
Re: Maemo Mapper v2.2 for OS2006/OS2007/OS2008
If MM is storing the files as GDBM (the default format), you're limited to 2gb of storage. If you're using SQlite3, you can fill it up as much as you like.

Re: Maemo Mapper v2.2 for OS2006/OS2007/OS2008
Just start a new repository, make sure it's in SQlite format and named differently. Then just download the maps as you please or whenever. This enables you to still use the old repo (just switch back to it.. name the new one like Google Maps 2) while getting the new one. Eventually your new one will catch up to the old one and you can delete the old one.

Re: Maemo Mapper v2.2 for OS2006/OS2007/OS2008
Do I have to use google maps to be able to use the gpx files for directions from gnuite website? Since I've had problems downloading google maps a while back, I've become very content with VE hybrid maps but, I can't seem able to open those gpx files I've created on my laptop and transferred to n810.

Re: Maemo Mapper v2.2 for OS2006/OS2007/OS2008
No you shouldn't have to. I've used them with Yahoo maps and it should work with other maps too.
|
Re: Maemo Mapper v2.2 for OS2006/OS2007/OS2008
Yeah, as Laughing Man said, just use your existing one while you build another one alongside it. What I am doing is building a massive new database in sqlite format using this script which is running right now on my utility server and building my DB for me off the tablet. :)

Re: Maemo Mapper v2.2 for OS2006/OS2007/OS2008
Frz, use the download script I linked. That way you don't need to let your tablet do any of the work. Just start it up and let it run. I've pulled down some 4 million tiles already and it's still going. I'm doing the zoom levels for the entire US from 16 down to 8, with the Michigan/Ohio area zoomed down to 6 since that's the primary area I travel in. :) It took me a couple weeks to get it all (kept having to restart the script because of my crappy internet connection causing the script to repeatedly bomb out) but I finally got it all and have been testing it in stages as I went, and so far, so good. :)

Re: Maemo Mapper v2.2 for OS2006/OS2007/OS2008
lol. The script is for use on your PC to build maps, not your tablet. You build the map file on your PC using the script and then transfer the completed database to your tablet. It's also currently only for Google street, although it shouldn't take much to hack it for other uses and other repositories. As for the zoom levels, I've just found it best to do the even numbered zooms only. For one it's a lot less zoom levels to download, and two, unless you have a need for any zoom level higher than 16 or lower than 6, you should only need 16, 14, 12, 10, 8, and 6. The only time I've found that 2 and 4 come in handy is if you're adding a lot of POI's, but otherwise under practical driving use, they're really not that handy and take up a ton of space for something you really won't use that often.

Question, don't anyone else find Maemo-mapper a bit slow? Is it possible to make it a bit faster, especially for browsing maps? When I am browsing the maps that I've already downloaded, it still takes a little bit of time to move to the next area, sometimes it just stalls for a minute or two at a black screen. |
