You consider using tar? That seems a more natural choice to me...

Re: How to mount USB CDROM on 2008 OS

Hello guys. I'm another lucky man which can't launch usb cdrom on my n800 tablet.
I've tried 1st time using attached *.deb file, after installation i rebooted device and attach cdrom, then there were two messages the first is that usb device is not supported and the that file system is not supported. After that i ran following commands and got following answers
/home/user # mount /dev/scd0 /root/mnt -t iso9660
mount: mounting /dev/scd0 on /root/mnt failed
/home/user # mount /dev/scd0 /root/mnt -t udf
mount: mounting /dev/scd0 on /root/mnt failed
At second attempt i reupdate software os2008 and launched *.ko files from the command line. The result was the same as in my first attempt.
.
PS I use cd rom Samsung Writemaster SE-TO84L.
Could you pls give me some recommendations?

Re: How to mount USB CDROM on 2008 OS

Help! I'm having problems installing modules. When I type "insmod cdrom.ko", I'm getting "no such file or directory. Ditto for "insmod /mnt/initfs/lib/modules/2.6.21-omap1/cdrom.ko. Of course I'm root. Where are these modules located? Of course I've installed the cdrom.deb (dkpg -i cdrom.deb) as root.

Thanks in prior to all of your help!

Re: How to mount USB CDROM on 2008 OS

cdrom.ko and other modules located in this folder:
/usr/lib/
but it's no help for me :-)
The .deb is no work for me.
/sorry for my bad english/

Re: How to mount USB CDROM on 2008 OS

If this is not working for you? Please provide some output.

dmesg is a command you can run from xterm to get information about whats happening when you plug in the CDROM/DVD

If you installed the deb, you do not need to reboot or do anything you should be good.

make sure the proper modules are loaded, from xterm run:
cat /proc/modules

Please paste your output for:

dmesg

and

cat /proc/modules

It all looks good so far

Can you try the mount again and paste any output here?

if it fails, also in xterm type

Re: How to mount USB CDROM on 2008 OS

You did not paste the mount command that is failing for you. What happens when you actually try to mount it, wheat error are you getting?

Re: How to mount USB CDROM on 2008 OS

I've already paste, pls see

mount: mounting /dev/scd0 on /root/mmnt failed
/usr/lib # mount /dev/scd0 /root/mmnt -t udf
mount: mounting /dev/scd0 on /root/mmnt failed

Penguinbait actually made a deb, what is the world coming to?

insmod cdrom.ko
insmod sg.ko
insmod sr_mod.ko
insmod udf.ko
insmod isofs.ko

plug in usb CDROM

use (or where ever you want to mount it)
mount /dev/scd0 /root/mnt -t iso9660
mount /dev/scd0 /root/mnt -t udf

I think it will choose automatically, but you can force the filesystem

Are you guys having as much fun as me :D

PS

I want some thanks for this :)

Penguinbait i installed cdrom.deb but tell me what is http://penguinbait.com/modules.tar and i need to add them to my n800 os2008 device??

Neat hack, but what sort of practical use ? :-)

Someone should make a mini portable CD reader/writer... you know, one that would just use the small format discs. That would go really well with my N810...

Well I just burned my first CD from my 810. Package will be forthcoming, but your gonna need KDE. So I imagine its not going to help Texrat much, but its possible I just did it.

Could you pls explain what I'm doing wrong?

NOTHING

I am sorry, I just attempted to use this and the modules all load, but they do not work. I just recompiled the modules and it works again. I will update the (deb) shortly.

See the first post it has been updated with a new deb that works with the latest OS version.

I was able to burn my entire flash partition to a CD. I should have a package soon for burning (its already done, I am testing again now) but again KDE will be a prereq. Although the command line tools will all be available inside the deb. Without KDE though you will not have the k3b frontend.

I just mounted a suse linux dvd using a lite-on external (mains-powered) USB dvd drive (one of these: http://www.ebuyer.com/product/156222 - quite a bargain at GB£31 or US$50!), so I am extremely please!
