Program icon will not go away (2008) - Phonelink
 

Hey all!

I'm playing with my new n810 and I installed Phonelink. After uninstalling it, the program icon still shows up in the application menu, however, as far as I can tell, it is completely gone. Is there something I can delete in X Term to get rid of this thing? (minus reflasing?)

Try editing /home/usr/.osso/menus/applications-menu or look in /usr/share/applications/hildon

I had the same issue with pwsafe, i'm sure there is a way to fix it, i just reflashed my os that did the trick

Thanks for the info Jerome but if had even an inkling of doing what you said I'd be all over that.

As far as I think I know the installed file mgr won't let you see let alone edit system files and am quite sure what you said to do is possible in Xterm but I know nothing about Linux/Unix command line commands.

I was cleaning up unused and infrequently used apps on my N800 (OS2008) and ran into the same problem. Subscribing to this thread to find out how I can get the PhoneLink icon out of my applications list.

I found the post but I'm not very good with commandline, and have absolutely no idea how to get to those directories and how to delete those files. Is there any way to get these files and folders to show up in Windows via a USB connection? :(

Haven't test this but to remove this file you could do:

1. sudo gainroot
2. rm /usr/share/applications/hildon/phonelink.desktop
3. exit

this is much better as root in xterm type find / -name "phonelink.*" and erase all the shortcuts that come out!

I just did it on my n800 (OS 2008), after reading a few threads here and a "Linux for dummies" page or two. :D Add repository containing becomeroot from Gronmayer's list if you don't already have it, install becomeroot, go into xterm, type sudo gainroot, type rm /user/share/applications/hildon/pwsafe.desktop. Icon is gone!

To find the file in the first place, I used find / -name "*pwsafe*" There is another file called /var/lib/gconf/apps/maemo/pwsafemaemo - anyone know whether it's safe to remove that one too? [Edited to add: actually, it's a folder containing a %gconf.xml file]

No, and if there were it would wreck all kinds of havock, because Win and 'nix text and file conventions are different.

You could telnet from Win to your nokia, though, but that's not what you want.

I have corrected the packager script that worked in OS2007 ...
You'll soon find phonelink 1.0.2 and pwsafe 1.3.1 on the repositories and the garage ...

I don't think that
rm /usr/share/applications/hildon/phonelink.desktop
or
find / -name "phonelink.*"
would work, because the whole menu structure is contained in the file:
/home/usr/.osso/menus/applications-menu
which is a xml file.

I uninstalled phonelink, the icon was still there, then i reinstalled it and uninstalled it and the icon was gone, maybe its fixed in the updated version

Haven't tried myself but others have reported this to be working.. :confused:
I'm guessing because the structure is created by the menu file but ignores those entries that don't have a .desktop file. I'm guessing too, the opposite will work equally, but I prefer 'cleaner' solutions ;) and now there is one even if I don't need it! :D

That is possible, I have not tried it. The opposite is true: if there is an unmatched .desktop file, it is added at the end of the menu.

quick hint the "change directory" cmd is just about the same in dos as in *nix cd <dir name>, cd .. (notice the space here), cd or cd ~ will always take you home...

if that might help peeps navigate to the above mentioned directorys

Little off topic, but managed to get rid of the annoying but preinstalled icons for 'skype' and 'gismo' by editiing the file and removing their .desktop files!

Forgot to say earlier that the correct path is:
/home/user/.osso/menus/applications.menu
and not:
/home/usr/.osso/menus/applications.menu
