how to use 'search'?

How do I use the Boolean operators with the search function? I tried to search for 'How low', it came back with 2 millions posts of 'how'. Now, dont jump on me, I am posting in a newbie section, I do not have to know anything and pls just take a deep sigh, 'bun wants to learn how to search' :). on a side line, I need several more N800s for Xmas present, and the lowest I can find is buy.com and some less reputatable online vendors. I been searching for half an hour, I probably just go with buy.com, oh well, $40 more for each one (compare to online.com), but will save me time to monkey around......

..does not seem possible using ITTF search or "advanced search", bun ....

Instead .....google....
site:internettablettalk.com/forums "how low"

...about 30 results...

If you did not want any "n800"...[some time in the future :)]

site:internettablettalk.com/forums "how low" -n800

...1 result...

Re: how to use 'search'?

The built in search won't search for any words less than 4 characters, I think all we can do is use an external search, or bug the admin :)

Great tip about using google.

This really bugs me when forum zealots nag about searching. The search function for web forums is usually not at all granular. Trying to find something specific with built-in search is really frustrating.

I have created a custom Google search engine for ITT searches here:

ITT search at Google

I suggest you bookmark it. :)

The google gadget's great, thanks.

Can someone suggest a good search for the differences between 2007 and 2008, and pros and cons? I tried
2007 2008
2008 feedback
2008 problems

but I just get old posts (as in several months) or lots of extraneous things.

Thanks for that link Technut. Most excellent :)

Still, most newbies will depend on the built-in forum search which is (IMHO) pretty much useless. I'd rather post a useful link rather than post a 'use the search, *********' message. It's just something that irritates me, like the "read the FAQ, jerk" messages that are so often posted on USENET.

But the former requires me to do the work that the OP should have done in the first place, and only encourages laziness in the OP. Those people remind me of some little kid whining "Carry me Daddy!!!!!!!"

And the latter response gives me a moment of satisfaction when I hit that 'submit post' button. ;)

It's a different story if they have searched and failed. Then I'm more than happy to help.

Maybe something like this:
os2008 (better OR worse)

There's no perfect way to get JUST the exact results you're looking for... you'll always have to weed through them a bit. That's just part of the research.
