Need linux experts to help configuring new file manager

I found a great file manager that works on OS2007/8. I realise there are alot of file managers out there and they are probably faster for doing quick things but this is a 'powershell' that appears to do (or can be configured to do) -everything-

The file manager is called emelFM2 (i have no idea) and you can check it out at the original authors website :
http://emelfm2.net/ScreenShots

It supports an entire scripting language, (osso)x-term integration, customization of toolbars, drag and drop, rebinding keys, built in viewer and editor, associations, plugin system, etc... I still dont know half the stuff it can do.

If you devise an uber-configuration please post it by uploading the /home/user/.config/emelfm2/config-en_US file

If you wish to see the vast amount of capabilities it can perform, read the documentation in /usr/local/share/docs/emelfm2

Warning Advanced users only! Learn to use it in safe directories

(Version 1.2.5 build 2/9/08) - Improved root behavior, context menu, and a few associations (deb, cbr).

OS2007 build :
http://wardenclyffetower.com/MaemoFi...bora-1.2.5.deb

OS2008 build :
http://wardenclyffetower.com/MaemoFi...nook-1.2.5.deb

I would recommend when you first run the program that you :
- Click the magnifying glass in the Upper-Left so that only one file pane is visible
- Click the window shade icon in Lower-Left (2nd to left) so that output window is minimized
- Then toggle on/off fullscreen as needed using magnifying glass in lower left
- Go into settings as needed using screewdriver/wrench icon near lower right. If you go into advanced mode it takes a while for dialog to refresh.

Key Bindings :
Menu Key : Context Sensitive Menu (tar files have options for expand, mp3 files have options for play in xmms, etc)
ZoomOut : Toggle Left File Pane only and split
ZoomIn : Toggle Right File Pane only and split
Fullscreen : Currently toggles between panes

If you have unzip, unrar, 7za archive utilities installed, emelfm2 supports them for extraction. If you dont, i have compiled and packaged a collection of them here :

(deb installer - will fail if you already have any of these already installed)
http://wardenclyffetower.com/MaemoFi...ip-rar-7za.deb

tar.gz (emelfm2 can natively extract this using the built in associated tar command)
http://wardenclyffetower.com/MaemoFi...ar_7zip.tar.gz

Re: Need linux experts to help configuring new file manager

I have updated this to (build) version 1.2.0 (see first post for link)

Its very usable with only minor quirks now. You shouldn't -need- to be a linux expert now to use it.

- Fullscreen toggle workaround (use magnifying glass icon in lower left) until i figure out how to bind that to the hardware fullscreen button.

- Integrates now with mplayer, xmms, quiver, mirage, unzip, tar.

- Context menu to show all options for a given file (open with, compress, view, edit, encrypt, change permissions, etc, etc)... just hit the hardware menu button.

- Zoomin and Zoomout hardware buttons now toggle between the two panes (double press of either shows both)

- Fullscreen toggles between two file panes.

- Remapped terminal to osso-xterm and remapped su to sudo (although it doesnt like -root?- password... anyone know what pass sudo needs?)

You are able to edit associations in the advanced settings although its still awkward due to screen space (scrolling within scrolling)... let me know if you get something working and i will add it to the base install configuration.

Unfortunately all the nokia applications seem to pass parameters through an osso context instead of on the command line... (i'm not sure why... doesn't seem very linux like) so you wont be able to launch music in nokia media player or view image in default image viewer... but for third party apps which support command line arguments (or command line utils) this makes a good environment for interoperating within a graphical power shell.

Re: Need linux experts to help configuring new file manager

OMG! This is soooooo much better than the builtin file manager. I've only just begun looking around but it looks great :D I did find one issue though - if you choose the have icons AND labels during the config, then you can't see all of the icons anymore including the Config icon. I had to uninstall and reinstall to fix it.

Thanks for making this!!

Re: Need linux experts to help configuring new file manager

Thanks, i think the only way to get labels is using the 'icons beside label' in options/interface... that mode seems to work well and is a good way to learn what icons mean... you just have to drop down the list to see all buttons that didnt fit.

Maybe ill try to remove the icons above label option since that doesnt seem to work well.

Thanks Pipeline, for this great find! Indeed, it appears to do way more than I really need!:D

Pipeline, this is just great.

Looking forward to any tweaks you might get round to.

Re: Need linux experts to help configuring new file manager

Thanks, and for other users : if you previously downloaded emelfm2 and your locale is other than English (US), please download the latest 1.2.2 version linked in first post.

I fixed an issue where my custom configuration file was not being used on devices with other locales. If the hardware buttons on the top of your device bring up any dialogs then its not using the custom configuration file.

Re: Need linux experts to help configuring new file manager

pipeline,

I tried to download the OS2007 version but I get '403 Forbidden'.

Re: Need linux experts to help configuring new file manager

I just downloaded it so it seems to be working... does the download work for you now?

The file you should be downloading for OS2007 (currently) is called emelfm2-bora-1.2.2.deb and this is what im linking to in the first post.

Otherwise try browsing the whole directory here :
http://wardenclyffetower.com/MaemoFiles

- and find the file manually.

Re: Need linux experts to help configuring new file manager

I got this:
>wget http://wardenclyffetower.com/MaemoFiles/emelFM2-bora-1.2.2.deb
--17:33:26-- http://wardenclyffetower.com/MaemoFiles/emelFM2-bora-1.2.2.deb => `emelFM2-bora-1.2.2.deb'

Connecting to wardenclyffetower.com|8.8.246.90|:80... connected.
HTTP request sent, awaiting response... 403 Response denied
17:33:26 ERROR 403: Response denied.

However, I think I figured out what's wrong - or at least I think so. Our outside firewall is probably blocking the site. The only reason for that would be that the URL is somehow blocked by Watchguard.inc, which our firewall subscsribes to (they keep a blacklist. Mostly their list is bad.) I downloaded it successfully through a Tor proxy, will try it RSN.

Re: Need linux experts to help configuring new file manager

Oh, well the main site is a Community Server (Discussion Board) so maybe thats it. Either that or you work for an oil company :)

As alternate, try :
http://x10dispatcher.com/Downloads/e...bora-1.2.2.deb

I had issues yesterday with connectivity to parts of the host site, so maybe this is temporary problem with network itself.

Re: Need linux experts to help configuring new file manager

much much thanks!

it's not exactly konqueror, krusader, or total commander (it may even be better than those if set up well. . .i don't know ), but you really made things easier for me right at this moment when i need an easy to install functional file manager so i don't have to hack at the screen in a terminal window.

As thanks i will d/l the i386 app and set up on a pc then try that in the tablet. Then i'll post the config. Plz give me a lot of time b/c it looks like lot of work! So many icons!

Wow that file list text was HUGE at first too!

Edit:
Ooooh! the editor works, too! . . . and it's hildonized!! :D

Very nice job, and double thanks!!

Re: Need linux experts to help configuring new file manager

Ahh glad your finding it useful.

Some changes i made locally (with intent to put in next installer) are to
- set font size to 14pt in panes and dialogs (viewer)
- panes 'select 1st item' in settings
- date format american? I guess this is better than current format and other locales can change.
- filetype tar.gz : list contents feature - get rid of | less to make functional

So, sure any help would be great- perhaps some features of busybox 1.10.0? -thanks

pipeline 2008-01-06 00:50

Re: Need linux experts to help configuring new file manager

I've done some more configuring and released a new 1.2.4 release in first post.

Changes :

- Date Format now includes year (it defaults to mm/dd/yy but you can change)
- Decreased font to 14pt in browser and increased font to 14pt in viewer
- Added owner column to file list panes
- panes select 1st item on entry into directory for quicker dpad navigation

Associations :
tar.gz : Fixed the 'list contents' context menu options
zip files : unzip and 'list contents' context options
rar : unrar and 'list contents' context options
tar : tar and 'list contents' supported
bz2, 7z : now use 7za for extract and list contents
Directory : Added browse with quiver to context option for dirs
pdf : evince and osso_pdfviewer*
deb : associated with sudo dpkg and hildon app manager*
mp3, wav : added maemo Media Player*
html, swf : added microb*

Archives will work with existing utilities built by others. If you need more archive utils for the associations above, see first post.

* Note Hildon associations are wrapper that only works on chinook and there is additional quirk that first load of application doesnt see associated file passed. Just minimize the app and launch association again. Although thats a pain for single file launches, its still useful for when your browsing/playing many similar file types like mp3s in media player and you can leave it loaded... subsequent launches work 1st time, everytime if target app stays loaded. (Thanks to kulves for this hildon chinook association wrapper)

Re: Need linux experts to help configuring new file manager

pipeline,
great work. I will try the new version asap.
Did you ever try to start as root from xterm? It seems that changes quite a lot as the UI look changes! Quite strange to my mind.

pipeline 2008-01-06 23:14

Re: Need linux experts to help configuring new file manager

Thanks, and yes i have that too since i frequently need to edit root files... i think its probably some gtk theming issue that nokia set up for user and not root. There are also issues with associations when running as root... something about dbus not being configured. But i usually just need to edit or view something when i'm root so its not a big issue.

I made an extra shortcut to launch in root mode since i do that so often. If anyone else wants to do the same i wrote up description of how i do this here :

I might be able to make a suggestion to fix this. can you point me at the relevant code?

Re: Need linux experts to help configuring new file manager

I am in the process of repackaging a few installers so i've made a new build of emelfm2 with some minor enhancements i'd been meaning to add.

First post download of build 1.2.5 includes these adds :
- launching emelfm2 as root now now looks the same (theme) and associations work (when run as root).
- modified the context menu positioning a bit to better display on chinook (less scrolling or gaps at top)
- added associations for debs... if running as user you can 'list contents' and 'extract here' , if running as root you can also dpkg-install
- added comix association for cbr files

If anyone wants to pass along ideas for other extensions/associations ideas let me know.

Re: Need linux experts to help configuring new file manager

I would have a request:

Is it possible to have a version that does not put anything in /usr/local ? As per debian standard?

Or is there a specific reason?

Re: Need linux experts to help configuring new file manager

Is there a list anywhere of what the various icons in emelFM2 do? The only manual (UserGuide) I have found is this, and it doesn't include anything about all those little icons.

And thanks, pipeline, for doing this port. Even I, who am not a Linux user, am finding it very helpful.

I just find it's best to experiment on non important folders. You can also look in Options too as you will see descriptions.

Failing that, just ask me too :P

hello all.
can someone help me out here please...an need root access on emelfm2.

I tried this so far>>>>>

How to run emelfm2 always with root permissions :

Edit (as root) the /etc/sudoers file and add :
user ALL = (ALL) NOPASSWD: ALL (if you want user 'user' to sudo anything) -or-
user ALL = NOPASSWD: /usr/bin/emelfm2 (if you just want 'user' to sudo emelfm2)
Then edit (as root), the /usr/share/applications/hildon/emelfm2.desktop and set the exec line to read :
Exec=sudo /usr/bin/emelfm2

Re: Need linux experts to help configuring new file manager

Does emelfm2 offer a "search" or "find" capability? [I did search the forums using these keywords, but no hits]. Like any file manager, I expected to be able to search for files using their filenames. If the application can do this, can it also provide searches by filetype (like *.wmv)?

Thanks

pipeline 2009-02-04 01:59

Re: Need linux experts to help configuring new file manager

No, it has the ability to filter files in any of the shown directories but not search.

I believe that most people are using mlocate or slocate but those probably run indexers in the background so i dont know if there are any performance issues. (something to search on though)

Any command which outputs to console can be integrated into emelfm2 though. Would be nice to have just a simple whereis utility out there.

Re: Need linux experts to help configuring new file manager

Thank-you for your confirmation. I did use a work-around: I connected the NIT to my desktop PC using the USB cable that came with it. Then I used the PC's file manager to do the search.
