Re: N800 gets stuck on Nokia logo

The thing is, the user of this N800 hasn't (to my knowledge) installed anything at all, just used it for the built-in applications.

Latest word now is that it won't even switch on, so it's going straight to the nearest repair centre on monday.

Thanks for the help though, the memory card suggestion was especially interesting.

Did we even attempt to flash the device? If it's not turning on, could that be because it was left in a reboot loop until the battery ran out?

Can't flash it, the user has no windows PC and no knowledge of how to flash by other means.

I would have suggested flashing right away otherwise.

Then what do they have? Linux? OS X?

Unless they're running an Amiga machine, they can use any of the three major modern operating systems to flash.

I'm guessing no machine at all. Sounds like a lunatic. ;)

3 Attachment(s)
I run the n800 with the os from internal memory then I mounted the os from the sd and got the two log that I've attached here....
Could someone help me to find a solution to solve the problem?

Looks like systemui is dying - user log and syslog has 10 retries of
Code:

Dec 12 13:36:52 Nokia-N800-39 DSME: process '/usr/bin/systemui' with pid 2096 exited with return value: 127
and then it gives up (and shuts down?)
Code:

Dec 12 13:36:54 Nokia-N800-39 DSME: Non-root process '/usr/bin/systemui' spawning too fast -> remove it
Either you should fix your changes in /etc/systemui/systemui.xml or something else is wrong with systemui. There is no further info.

Yes, in theory, but in practice it's only Windows that has the official update wizard available for it.

I don't think this user could cope with anything but using the wizard.

If you can find something that works as easily as the Wizard and is compatible with a Mac, then that would be great, but AFAIK there isn't such a thing.

I had this issue many times with the last two versions of OS2007. Reflashing fixed it, but I never nailed down what was causing it. I don't know much about linux, so I never looked at the logs or terminal. Someday I'll learn this stuff, lol.

It seemed to be related to allowing the battery to fully discharge, resulting in an improper shutdown, but that's just a guess based off of my personal experience.

It's really a waste to send it in to a repair center when the device can be flashed so easily. Surely, this guy knows someone, somewhere with a Windows based PC and an internet connection, right? Is the flasher for other platforms really that hard to use? I wouldn't know, myself.

Regardless, since I updated to the OS2008 beta, I haven't had this problem, or several other problems I was having. I'd recommend not only reflashing, but also moving to OS2008. I'd bet that it doesn't happen again with OS2008.

LordFu, thanks for the info, you're the first person to say they had this happen to them as well.

I think you're right that if there's any possible way to get it flashed that would be the best course of action. I'll ask them again if they know anyone with a Windows PC.

What frustrates me is that there's no Linux or Mac update wizard, surely the app can't be that complex and difficult to port?

The thing is, they bought the tablet precisely because there wasn't any difficult stuff, you just switch it on and start the browser. Once it starts getting more complicated, it sort of spoils their reason for having the tablet.
