N800 gets stuck on Nokia logo
I tried searching the forum but couldn't find anything that corresponded to this problem.
Is there anything that can be done if an N800 gets stuck on the Nokia screen during startup? It switches on fine, the logo appears, but there's no animated blue line at the bottom of the screen. It basically just stays on the Nokia logo until the screen switches itself off after a few minutes. The N800's owner can't reflash it, they don't have a Windows PC or the technical knowledge to do it manually. |
Re: N800 gets stuck on Nokia logo
I've seen similar symptoms with a bad memory card (if I remember, it was the 128 MB nokia-branded one that came with N800). It got stuck after 2 seconds kernel is loaded (while trying to load memory card driver), and shut of after a minute or so. Removing the bad MMC helped.
Unfortunately seeing the actual cause is only possible with serial console.. So your case might be about N other things, too. |
Re: N800 gets stuck on Nokia logo
What is the correct procedure to get going again if your N800 develops a terminal software problem? If I plug the USB into to my PC and then hit the On button, I see something about firmware update mode - is that a reliable way to restore the unit to initial condition even if it's completely screwed up?
No terminal problems yet, but I'm a bit paranoid with all the experimental software I'm installing, and I haven't even tried any kernel hacks yet. |
Re: N800 gets stuck on Nokia logo
I got this same problem when fooling around with a .profile, and I had to re-flash to solve it.... Bad news for your situation, I guess.

Re: N800 gets stuck on Nokia logo
Had the same after upgrading something linked with gtk. It couldn't start the GUI anymore. It was stuck.
So I reflashed :) Isn't there a way to get a terminal opening? or any hack to get back the hand on the device? I really miss more information during boot. |
Re: N800 gets stuck on Nokia logo
There is a way to SSH into your IT from your PC when it is stuck on the Nokia logo, but I never figured out how.
When this happened to me I ended up reflashing and it fixed everything. (Turned out that I installed an offending lib file that b0rked something in the system.) Tim |
Re: N800 gets stuck on Nokia logo
Happened to me this past weekend. I was being "proactive" and upgraded a few things that it said needing upgrading - claws mail is the only one I remember, but there were several that I updated. Anyway, next reboot it never recovered. I reflashed. Such a PITA.

Reflash will fix it but you can also install bootmenu (and optionally clone your system to card) before you start experimenting with your system. Then once this happens you can either boot into usb network recovery mode, ssh in over usb, mount rootfs and fix it or you can boot device with copy of clean system and mount and fix broken rootfs too. All this without reflashing and losing your data. |

Re: N800 gets stuck on Nokia logo
The thing is, the user of this N800 hasn't (to my knowledge) installed anything at all, just used it for the built-in applications.
Latest word now is that it won't even switch on, so it's going straight to the nearest repair centre on monday. Thanks for the help though, the memory card suggestion was especially interesting. |

I would have suggested flashing right away otherwise. |

Unless they're running an Amiga machine, they can use any of the three major modern operating systems to flash. |
Re: N800 gets stuck on Nokia logo
I'm guessing no machine at all. Sounds like a lunatic. ;)

Re: N800 gets stuck on Nokia logo
3 Attachment(s)
I run the n800 with the os from internal memory then I mounted the os from the sd and got the two log that I've attached here....
Could someone help me to find a solution to solve the problem? |

I don't think this user could cope with anything but using the wizard. If you can find something that works as easily as the Wizard and is compatible with a Mac, then that would be great, but AFAIK there isn't such a thing. |
Re: N800 gets stuck on Nokia logo
I had this issue many times with the last two versions of OS2007. Reflashing fixed it, but I never nailed down what was causing it. I don't know much about linux, so I never looked at the logs or terminal. Someday I'll learn this stuff, lol.
It seemed to be related to allowing the battery to fully discharge, resulting in an improper shutdown, but that's just a guess based off of my personal experience. It's really a waste to send it in to a repair center when the device can be flashed so easily. Surely, this guy knows someone, somewhere with a Windows based PC and an internet connection, right? Is the flasher for other platforms really that hard to use? I wouldn't know, myself. Regardless, since I updated to the OS2008 beta, I haven't had this problem, or several other problems I was having. I'd recommend not only reflashing, but also moving to OS2008. I'd bet that it doesn't happen again with OS2008. |
Re: N800 gets stuck on Nokia logo
LordFu, thanks for the info, you're the first person to say they had this happen to them as well.
I think you're right that if there's any possible way to get it flashed that would be the best course of action. I'll ask them again if they know anyone with a Windows PC. What frustrates me is that there's no Linux or Mac update wizard, surely the app can't be that complex and difficult to port? Quote:

Re: N800 gets stuck on Nokia logo
Just in case anyone's interested, I finally got hold of the "broken" tablet and here's what happened:
-I couldn't turn it on. -I replaced its battery with one from my working N800. -The "broken" N800 turned on, booted and worked without any problems. -I put the original battery back in the "broken" N800 and charged it. It took a long long time, something like ten or more hours to register as fully charged. -After it was fully charged, the "broken" N800 worked fine with its original battery. Subsequent charges took a normal period of time, and I used it for over a week to make sure it was working okay. I couldn't find anything wrong with it at all, it switched on and off without any problems. ...so it seems that the N800 wasn't broken after all, but the battery had somehow gotten into a state where it took a long time to charge and this somehow made it behave erratically during boot-up. After that long charge though it worked fine and didn't require long charges again. Anyone know what might have been going on? |
