Just kidding :) It's good to see more "feminine" input.
And you're right PCQ, it is an acquired skill.

I was using VNC to move things around (it's more manly :p ).
However, after the upgrade I reinstalled it and I can no longer click on any "home" widgets like "Simple Launcher" in VNC :(

Oh well, back to brush strokes.

Man, this forum is cooking! I thought this was released a few hours ago, but now I found the announcement thread and it is up to 11 pages already. Wow!

caps lock works by holding the stylus on the shift button for like 2 seconds. and as for the other apps not installing all the servers are being hammer! give it a few days! I`m lucky i got everything up and running already!

Click and hold for Caps lock? Not cute. Just slowed down the usage of the onscreen KB.

They should have put that language indicator/switcher into the KB popup menu as if one changes languages more often than using multiple caps. C'mon people.

The upward sliding stroke is working much better in this release (on N800) - this stroke capitalises (or shifts) whatever tile is beneath the stylus... this has been badly broken for the last two or three firmware releases (since the touchscreen sensitivity was increased).

Not as handy as a permanent CAPS LOCK key but it might prove useful. I can't say I need or use a CAPS LOCK key that often which is possibly why it's been relegated to where it is now. I'm sure I'll miss it at some point though! :)

Yes. And with a Bluetooth headset too - confirmed with a Motorola headset, and "two very long Skype phone calls without any problems".

Downloading from the repositories is a bit of a nightmare right now - the servers are either still getting slammed or have totally shut down. :(

I have an N800
With the OS2008 beta I was able to view the following mp4 files in Media player

But with this final version I am NOT :-(

Anyone else?

I have the following in my RSS reader (Used to be in Video center)
PodshowTV for Nokia
http://www.podshow.com/collection/79056.xml

but the mp4 files it contains says "File format not supported" when I open it in Media player.

I paired mine again today with the new OS. I'd give it another try. Make sure the keyboard is in visible mode, make sure you're typing number for the code via the Fn key, and don't forget the "enter" at the end.

zman I had an issue with this and was pulling my hair out when I upgraded to the beta 2008. I could connect everything including headsets etc... I never did find out what was wrong but it did eventually connect after about 15 attempts?! Try a reboot of the device I know that was part of what I did.

On another note. They did fix the hand writing in xterm :)

An annoyance is still if using the soft kybd (not a Bluetooth one) and you tap the Ctrl button, the keyboard retracks so it takes another tap to get it back again to put the letter for Ctrl you want in.

The disappearing SD card (and associated corruption) problem that was solved in the latest os2007 firmware has returned. At the moment only dissappearing cards and hard reset of the unit (removing battery) but I don't want to try until I see a corrupted card.

So, back to os2007 until a Nokia solution.

FOUND IT!!

About the thumb activating the full screen keyboard!

You have to double-tap with your finger!

That's why to someone it was working with two fingers! it was actually registering a double-tap.

Damn them, why did they not put it into the help file at least ?
I flashed my tablet twice until I discovered it...
I've noticed that there was no "pressure" setting near the "activate by finger tap", so.. a ring rang ( :p ) in my mind...

I did see the tools menu. I did try changing things there to see if it helps... no luck. If I assign the D-pad center key to open thumb board, I can get the thumb board up.

In the original post I meant that automatic selection of thumb board when screen was pressed with a finger does not work. Even the suggested "multi-touch" (two thumbs at the same time) does not bring up the thumb keyboard. Every time only the stylus keyboard shows up.

Double-tap with the finger is the solution.

I think there was a change in the way how OS2008 handles memory cards, especially when initially mounted. It does run some quick disk check, and if errors are found it doesn't mount them or mounts it as read only.

(At one time on earlier OS2008 test images this check was so picky that none of my 4GB or 8GB SDHC cards never mounted... while they worked fine on PC with external card reader.)

Re: 2.2007.50-2 firmware bugs and issues

One thought about disappearing cards.
I've noticed that, after a firmware flash, it does not tell the user to disconnect the tablet from the computer.
Leaving the USB cable connected will umount the cards in order, for them, to be mounted on the PC.
They should tell people to remove it before restarting the tablet after a successful flash.

May be people disconnect the cable when it's starting the mount process on the PC ?

Re: 2.2007.50-2 firmware bugs and issues

OK!... Yesterday I got the Official Released of 2008 installed on my N800... got all the repositories loaded... got most of my previous programs reinstalled and everything pretty much running great. Connection to my home wifi has never been a problem and with the new OS seemed to be even faster than with 2007 or the 2008 beta. After installing the new OS yesterday I probably logged onto and off of the network a half of dozen times with no problems.

This morning however, I am getting "Network errors" every time I try to connect. I have shut the tablet off... removed the battery... even disabled some home applets (simple launcher and om weather) and still no luck in connecting to the network.

Something else I just noticed is when I boot the tablet up, once it gets to the home screen and it starts to look for a wifi connection, the wifi icon flashes normally for a bit then stops without giving any errors or dialog. When I try to connect manually it then gives the Network Error message.

Anyone else experiencing this?

Regards...

Omega

But that's not the case, because I did it correctly. After the first reboot, everything worked fine. I also downloaded 196 MB of maps with no problem. But this morning, after trying to use the maps app, I noticed it didn't launched properly because of the corruption problem I stated. Opening the file manager and the memory was disappeared. After removing battery, everything seems ok now, but then, reading a PDF document... and error in the PDF reader saying the PDF was corrupted. A visit to the file manager confirms that the cards where empty or corrupted.

Again, turn off the machine by removing battery (freezes with the nokia logo when trying to shut down properly), turn on and everything is okay again.

This behavior is THE SAME I had before a card corruption appeared in the first revisions of os2007.

Thanks for your support. I hope Nokia is working in a solution.

Which OS are you running on your desktop/laptop ?

I've heard Leopard is having issues about corrupting data on USB mass storage devices and, indeed, yesterday it was not able to copy off some pictures from my V640i SE phone in mass storage mode (the few that it was able to copy off from the phone were corrupted)

Blah, hate that :(

If there's only a few ctrl sequences you need, you could add shortcuts, I have them for ctrl-an and ctrl-ap (for screen)

Ex.
<ctrl>a,n

I can't surf with my phone anymore (I have a 6680). No problems with OS2007, but with OS2008, I can pair the devices up, but as I watch the Connection Manager, data goes out, but nothing comes back. I've tried setting up via the automatic process (Phone option in control panel) as well as manually.

Any ideas?

Obviously this helps new users to know how to get the desired result, but it seems logically, it should be the opposite. I should touch to get touch, and use hardware to use more hardware.

Of course, this is a serious problem for those of us who use VNC Viewer and have to disable the thumb-keypad-on-dpad behavior. We can't use the thumb keyboard at all anymore.

Edit: I just bopped my finger on a text field and got the thumb keyboard. So I'm happy.

I seem to only need a single finger tap. I wonder how our settings differ? Maybe I should post a picture of my finger? There might be differences in bone structure or something...
