Just bought a Sharp Zaurus SL-C1000
Hehehe. I'm hanging up the Palm OS hat. No, I did not get a Dell Axim. I just bought a Sharp Zaurus SL-C1000. It got Linux. The last PDA I would ever need for years. It is being shipped, I should have it by Saturday. I got a good deal on it.
Here are my reasons. -VGA- oohhhh so pretty! Videos and so much workspace. -Thumboard- tap tap homework :-) and Instant Messaging -Clamshell -SD card slot -CF card slot type I and II. -Microdrive support- hmm 6gb Microdrive on ebay for only $199 -CF wifi cards supported. I will buy one eventually. Videos can be streamed :D As for games, I can still play emulators. Those were the only games I ever played on handhelds. :D :D -dances- Specs listed here. It is converted from Japanese to English. http://conics.net/shp/pda/zaurus-sl-...c1000-logo.jpg The Sharp Zaurus, what the Palm LifeDrive should have been. These are the true Mobile Managers. |
I got my Sharp Zaurus today! Just in time for 1src chat. My precious is sooo sexy.
I'm uploading pictures now. About 35 of them. I will write my thoughts on it later. It works great! It's a brick but it's no doorstop LifeDrive! hehe. Linux ^_^ So sexy :D I uploaded all pictures now. http://photobucket.com/albums/a267/Legodude522 http://i13.photobucket.com/albums/a2...2/324563fa.jpg http://i13.photobucket.com/albums/a2...2/6f813cc7.jpg http://i13.photobucket.com/albums/a2...2/67871447.jpg http://i13.photobucket.com/albums/a2...2/46659281.jpg2 Update: Speed is decent. There is some lag. I'm ok with it because it does quite a bit. LifeDrive will lag just doing little tasks. The Zaurus does what it is meant to do an well, a laptop replacement. It got an awesome office suite on it. I don't mind it's brickiness, I wear jeans and it's fine. Performance hitches are worth it except for v I am quite satisfied with it except... video playback sucks compared to a Palm or PPC. I'm gonna try other encoding settings and try to get a sweet spot. I can get it to play good, but not TCPMP amazing. More like using mmplayer, lol. There is a TCPMP port coming out eventually, I will get it right away. For now, this is sufficient. I don't have a CF wifi card yet so I can't test web browsing. It does have Netfront and Opera. Oh, and so you guys know, there is no soft reset button Please post what you want to know and I will write a review. |
Yes it does look very nice!
I too was thinking about one o these... but decided for the portability of the 770, and as I would use it most for browsing and email, and not so much for homework anymore ;-) Yep I'm an old fart :) But new to linux, and it rocks, just installed my first debian file / printer server and I love it! For my day job i'm a windows programmer so I'm locked into the m$ world..... Thinkning about switching the home desktop, but I do want to play Oblivion when it comes out :-) No questions to ask, just wanted to say hi bye |
The above posts were just a copy and paste job. ;)
Ok. :) Zaurus isn't for everyone. The Nokia 770 is nice but it doesn't do everything I need it to do. The Zaurus is quite amazing in what it can do over an average Palm OS/Windows Mobile PDA. I can't carry around my laptop much, especially for school. I'm a high school student. A Palm with a foldout keyboard is nice, but this is much more efficient. I thought about getting a Palm LifeDrive, but it won't do everything I need it to do. I recently had a Palm Zire 72, it was nice but I wasn't using it to its full potential. So I sold that and made a profit since I refurbished it myself for cheaper. hehe. I still miss my Tapwave Zodiac 1. I don't miss the Zire 72. |
How much did it cost? I thought they were very expensive, particularly as compared to the price of the OQO 1's when they went on sale recently ($1300?).
I like the keyboard aspect of it. I'll be interested to hear about your wifi experience. Will it be B or G? |
I bought it used for $330 total on a forum. It is like new. Original screen protector is still on it. :) I'm still shopping around for an 802.11g CF wifi card that is compatable. Most are but I want to be sure. Buying a new one from a company that imports them would cost $550. Not worth that much.

The first thing you want to do is flash in the Cacko ROM. ;-) It includes a new kernel with a bttv drivers for *vastly* improved multimedia performance. You can rid your videos at full speed with no skips. I suggest ZPlayer and/or Kino as the media players to use. Much better than the Sharp one. Additionally, Cacko cleans up the interface quite a bit, adds support for innumerable WiFi and Bluetooth cards, gives you a bunch of handy little applets for managing swap, overclocking, etc, and just plain beats the pants off of the Sharp ROM. http://www.oesf.org/forums is the place to start. :-) - Rich |
I bought it from someone at OE forums. I post there :) He customised the ROM himself so some of the stuff is optimised. I am fine with it for now... If I get bored, I will play with the Cacko ROM.

My Sharp Zaurus "fondle" video. :)
Video here at Google Videos. It looks like somewhere when it was encoded, it got faster. |
