Navicore/Wayfinder download issues with OS2008

I just installed the OS2008, but I am now having trouble with Wayfinder. I have entered my Navicore license code, but the map download has proven to be impossible. The download begins, but then it just stops and I get a message telling me that the download has failed. Has anyone had this same problem, and if so, do you have any suggestions? This sure is frustrating.

Re: Navicore/Wayfinder download issues with OS2008

few people reported this problem when they did not have enough free space on their internal MMC card.

I'm getting the same error but have got a 2GB memory card with about 100mb filed and it won't download even a 7mb map... so that's not the only cause.

I just tried to download Greece map (7MB) and it worked fine for for me. Not sure what the problem can be.

I too had the problem of no download on the maps. Thanks to a nice fellow who posted this link:

http://www.navicoretech.com/Consumer.../en_GB/tablet/

I downloaded and extracted the maps from Navicore. Took the folder mapdata_USA West and pasted it to the folder "map" created on my SD card by all the failed download attempts and viola, we've got map.

745MB for the Eastern USA maps? My ISP cuts me back to dial up speed after 200MB downloads in a 24 hour period. The fair access policy punishment lasts for 24 hours. Why can't these maps be available on CD or DVD for purchase. I can't be the only one with this predicament.

That's absolutely obscene. Which ISP is this exactly? Is there no other competition in your area?

As mentioned in another thread, you can do this by copying the 'mapdata_REGION' folder from the Navicore SD card as well.

I'd been trying to download the maps for days with no luck, copying over from the SD card did the trick.

After seeing your post, I have a feeling some enterprising individual will probably PM you an offer. (and no, not me)

The ISP is Hughesnet satellite ISP. It's the only choice for (semi) broadband service in this rural area at the present time. Tehy call this limitation the "fair access policy." Currently you can circumvent the the policy by downloading between 3 and 6:00 am but I'm old and pooped and need my rest. i dream of DSL coming here someday.

But this is for folks like moi who don't have the Navicore SD, nor could get the maps from whatever download site the N800 steering us towards.

The failed downloads on the IT installs a Navicore license to your SD that enables you to use the downloaded maps from the Navicore site.

Now whether these will work with the activated wayfarer update, I dunno.

Ah, well, that makes sense. It's what you get for living out away from all the noise and bustle of a metropolitan area. :p

a) does it matter if the card is external vs internal and is it possible to switch?
b) also i have most maps downloaded as archive from Navicore before, but extracting it into map folder didn't do the trick. what else could i be missing? thx

a. Dunno. I used the external. I was ready to throw it out the window at the time.

b. What I did was extract the .tar to a folder, grab the mapdata_whatever folder, and drag just that folder to the map foolder on the SD. This was on a Vista machine. I had to play around with the location in the map folder. I first tried putting the Navigon stuff on theSD, but it was already there from the failed downloads. Then I tried various locations in the map folder on theSD. But, in the end, it worked when I just put it in the main folder.

Don't know about anyone else, but my N800 does NOT like this site. Y'all gots some serious scripting problems, bro.

thanks. i'm still working on it...

so if i understand correctly if you download more than one region/country it renames the folders depending on which one you're selecting at the time? the folder for the one selected gets renamed to "mapdata" and the other downloaded ones become "mapdata_xyz"? and if you select "xyz" as a current region it renames other folder?

Correct! What I've been leaving out is that I started dozens of downloads on my N800 the "correct" way and everyone stalled at various points. I looked at the stuff that the Wayfinder site put on my SD card and it matched the information that some folks on here said was the info which they had on their Navicore DVD or SD--right down to the name Navicore and the string of digits for DRM stuff. So, I figured (correctly) that if I now had Navicore DRM data, I could borrow their maps too.

When I first downloaded the map data, I tried putting the entire folder downloaded from the Navicore site in the folder that already existed on the SD card (placed there by the failed downloads) named "mapdata" and it wouldn't work.

By the time I discovered the correct method--just the Navicore "mapdata" folder (not the Navicore DRM junk- you already have it--Wayfinder gave it to you) and the correct location--just put it inside the "map" folder the failed downloads placed on your SD--I forgot everything.

So I went back inside my now working SD card and WTF the folder mapdata_USA West was gone. Its name was changed and the info dumped into your failed download's "mapdata" folder. That's why you DON'T put the folder there first. It does it for you upon startup.

A lot of work to try to circumvent a too narrow intertube, no?

Re: Navicore/Wayfinder download issues with OS2008

i think i finally got it. whew. even restored me old favorite locations, apparently it's just a text file with coordinates so fairly easy to pre-load with others by hand.

has anyone noticed "mapdata_Atlantis" among other map folders? where's the feet?

Re: Navicore/Wayfinder download issues with OS2008

I'm posting the way I found to install the map (Italy in my case) in the external sd.

I've an internal sd with 2 partition. The n800 see the 300mb one. The external is 8gb large.

After activating wayfinder (with the license of the n700 navicore pack), I tried to download the Italy map from the menu but fails.
Then I deleted all the "map" directory both from internal and external sd.
I launched wayfainder and in the internal sd the "map" folder was created again.
I moved the "map" folder from the internal to the external sd.
Then I lanched wayfinder again and download the Italy map succesfully.

When the map was downloaded wayfinder create a directory under "map" named "mapdata_ITALY". When the installation was completed the "mapdata_ITALY" was renamed "mapdata" and the old "mapdata" folder (the default directory that wayfinder created at first launch) was renamed "mapdata_Atlantis".

That's all.

:)

Thanks. I had already downloaded USA_West and this method worked nicely for USA_East. I used winrar to unzip the tar.gz file in windows.

Re: Navicore/Wayfinder download issues with OS2008

Hello,

After not having any luck trying to download maps directly onto my N800/OS 2008 I downloaded the map file USA_West_2007_3.tar.gz
(681MB) from Navicore to my Windows PC.

I then transferred that file into the "map" folder on my SDHC 4GB card which had the "map" etc. folders already on it and put the card into the internal slot. That's all that is on the card.

According to previous posts in this forum I believe this was the correct method.

However, the map file does not show in the Maps in device tab in the Map application.

I also tried to open the map file by selecting it and when asked which application I wanted to open it with I selected the Map application. That didn't work.

I then came across the quote below and I don't understand the part about "I used winrar to unzip the tar.gz file".

I didn't think that the map file that I downloaded from Navicore had to be unzipped.

Any suggestions?

Thank you.

OK..so reflashed..installed the maps program..downloaded usa maps east-unzipped to the internal card. Still the program doesn't recognize it being there. I moved the folder to the navicore folder..the root of the card..the maps folder..the mapdata folder..all to no avail. Oh well. Back to my N95 or my Garmin. Much easier to deal with

Hello,

Quote: "I didn't think that the map file that I downloaded from Navicore had to be unzipped."

First, I apologize for not having done some more research about extracting tar or gz files. I'm new to linux. I couldn't understand how a file that was 681MB still needed to be unzipped.

I was also confused as to where the extracted files went to. I found my map "mapdata_USA West" in a folder named Navicore on my PC after I did the extraction.

Now a new question.

In any of the mapdata folders there are files that have the extension .qt which is for Quick Time Movie. I tried to open these files even on my PC but get error messages. Do these files do anything and can they be deleted to free up space?

Thank you.

those are not Quick Time Movie files, just a coincidence in the extension.

once you unzip your "mapdata_USA West" put it next to your other mapdata folder(s) and it should recognize it

Re: Navicore/Wayfinder download issues with OS2008

Finally, after moving the map usa east folder to different places, the only way I got it to show is to download the 1mb singapore maps and once it was installed the usa maps were recognized. Maybe a license thing.

How does one get the maps app to see the external GPS? I'm using a gps device that maemo mapper had no problem using, but this app doesn't see it

Update: I couldn't get the maps app to see the external GPS..so I discovered an external GPS app for the N95 and it works real good with the N800 maps app

Hi,

Having a little different problem than others. After a failed download, I foolishly took the card out and deleted the map folder on my sd card. ( I had to do it with windows because the N800 refused to do it as read only files). Now map won't launch. It starts then fails returning to the home screen. I've uninstalled and reinstalled map, but still won't launch. I've even reflashed my N800, which recreated the map folder on the sd, but map still won't launch. Apparently, it's a card issue, even though the N800 reads it fine. The next step, I guess, is to reformat the card. Anyone else run into this and able to fix it?

Probably best off just formatting your internal card.

Re: Navicore/Wayfinder download issues with OS2008

:D
Hello,

Thanks to everyone in this forum I now have the maps I wanted on my N800. I find the maps to have detailed and mostly accurate info. Some I downloaded via the "map" app. on the Nokia and some I downloaded from the Navicore website onto my PC.

As I read through the posts in this forum, I find it difficult sometimes to understand what the poster is saying or asking.

For example: "I downloaded the map and it won't open".

So, it would be helpful to know where the map was downloaded from and where it was downloaded to. Was it downloaded using the Nokia tablet or a PC? Was it downloaded via the "map" application on the Nokia or was it downloaded from the Navicore website onto a PC as a tar/gz file where it needs to be extracted/unzipped?

Now for my question:

Since I'm not using a GPS with the maps on the Nokia, is there a way to remove the prompt asking about the GPS every time I launch the "map" app. on the Nokia?

Thank you.

I too I'm confused. I tried downloading the "USA_West_2007" from the maps selection within the "Map" program. However it keeps failing. So I'm downloading the map from Navicore. What next....
do unzip it, or leave it zipped.
What folder do I put it to make the "Map" program find it?

Any directions on how to manual install this map?

Hello,

You said "So I'm downloading the map from Navicore" but you didn't say where you downloaded it to.

If you downloaded this map "USA_West_2007_3.tar.gz"
(note the extensions) from the Navicore website onto your PC it will need to be unzipped/extracted.

Depending where on your PC you downloaded the file to, there may be a folder named "NavicoreMaps". There should then be a subfolder named "mapdata_USA West" approximately 685MB. This is the folder that needs to go onto the Nokia.

As you can see others in this post have already given instructions on how to do this.

Good luck ! :)

Re: Navicore/Wayfinder download issues with OS2008

For anyone running the Navicore Map app for the first time who prefers to put their maps on their external SD card, Lupin3d's instructions seem to be correct and the most effective. Nokia is brain-dead for not providing a way to specify where the maps should go when they ported this app to the N800.

To recap for new OS2008 users running Map for the first time:

1. Select Map from the main program menu to run the Navicore application for the first time.

2. When it displays the Maps window, cancel without downloading any maps.

3. Exit the Map application.

4. In File Manager, you should find a map directory created on your internal SD card. This is where the maps go.

5. If you prefer to have the maps on your external SD card, move the map directory there, deleting it from the internal card. the Navicore Map application will find it there automatically on its next run.
