Screen protector convert!
 

I have to eat crow. I'm seeing quite a few hairline scratches in my N800 screen (less than two months old!) and two minor gouges. I've carried my Treo 700p for a year in the pants-pocket w/o a single scratch and I wrongly believed that my N800 would fare as well. Bzzzt! Thanks for playing! Now, I'm searching threads for the best SP. BTW, When my N800 is not on my desk, it's in a case. This (luckily minor, thus far) problem was inflicted my Nokia's stylus.

Great that your searching, but you still started a new thread :).
I'd recommend just cutting up a piece of transparency material.

That's what I'm using now. I has one of those fellows one size fits most cut to size protectors on before. It scratched worse than the screen does. I need to figure out what protector came with my old dull axim. I put the second one that came with it on my zaurus. It's been on there for over two years and there's not a hint of a scratch. It was a tad thicker than overhead plastic and has a sticky side. I really like the stick on protectors better than the ones that slip under the screen bezel. I've had crap get under the latter and scratch the screen.

The best screen protectors are Invisible shield, be wary their shipping is slow, but well worth the wait.

When you order the n800, it comes with a sp on it right? When i got mine, i just cut off the littlle reflective tab and works fine.

Another vote for Invisible Shield. $12.95 may seem steep, but they are virtually indestructible. Check out their demo at invisibleshield.com. I ordered mine when they were offering a free micro-fiber bag as an incentive, and it ended up fitting the N800 better than the included pouch.

That's more of a screen shipping protector. It won't last as long as a real screen protector.

I'm now in this boat, too. I clearly remember gloating over the mint condition of my N800's screen in a thread, here at ITT.

I'm guilty of using the stylus on a soiled screen. I've dropped my device from waist- high onto any number of unfriendly surfaces (asphalt/concrete/hardwood), once hard enough to pop the face-plate loose and knick the finish on the built-in stand .

Yes, I'm that clumsy. I've got three very light scratches on the screen, and a few dings on the edges. It's beginning to show some wear.

I'm getting some boxwave accecories for the holidays, thanks to my wife, lol. I ordered the rubberized second-skin and some screen protectors.

I've had my N800 since early February, with no problems. I don't use a screen protector. I use the stylus only when I really have to. Not a helpful answer to your question, I know, but it suggests that you're right about the stylus being the culprit.

In my case, the grime on my screen provided just enough abrasiveness to make the stylus an issue. They're pretty minor, really, but I'm hoping to not add any more. My screen gets cleaned much more frequently, in the meanwhile.

Some screenprotectors also make the screen less slippery, like the Boxwave and Brando ones. I prefer that to a uncovered screen.

Another vote for the Boxwave Anti-Glare. The anti-glare really looks fantastic and the texture couldn't be more perfect (it also reduces finger-smudging by a large amount).

The eBay variety (custom cut for the 8*0) is good, too.

I've got mine from ScreenPatronus too. Excellent quality but I've found it not accurately sized to fit exactly the N800 screen (a tad short).

Anyone know of a good place within Canada that you can get screen protectors?

Hoping to have my N800 in my hands on Christmas and eager to play around with it.

I ordered an Boxwave screen protector a few days ago for my N800, so should be here soon. I was wondering how hard it is to install? I tried with a cheap iPod protector from Wal-Mart, but we could not get it centered on the screen and when we finally did it had dust and bubbles under it, and that's after I cleaned the crap out of it.

Get your work area cleaned up and set up ahead of time. Have a sink to wash it nearby, do it in a low-dust room, place the N800 face-down on a table after you clean it's screen off and only turn it over when you're ready to apply. Lots of water makes things easier, don't be too worried about getting water on the screen just try not to get too much into the edges (you may find it helpful to remove the faceplate).

Basically, my application went like this:

1. Wash your hands with a good strong soap, Lava works particularly well here.
2. Remove the N800's faceplate.
3. Unpack the protector, setting the hard plastic bubble remover nearby.
4. Clean the screen, making sure to remove all smudges, spots, and dust (either use the included lint-free cloth, or one of your own).
5. Set the N800 face-down on a flat surface (I constructed a little stand so the screen wouldn't touch the table with the faceplate off).
6. Grab the protector and figure out which side goes on the screen, then peal off the protective plastic on the sticky side.
7. Flip the N800 over, center up one edge of the protector and apply it from that one edge to the other.
8. Now, if you've gotten lucky you'll have it nicely centered up, dust free and with very few bubbles (Ha!), if so, then go ahead and move on to step 14, if not, then it's time to start the next of many attempts to get it right. ;)
9. If you've got dust, then go ahead and remove the protector and set it aside somewhere safe (sticky side up, it doesn't really matter if you get more dust on it right now).
10. Remove all of the dust off of the N800's screen and flip it back face-down again.
11. Now, head on over to the sink and wash all the dust (and, probably, fingerprints) off of the protector.
12. Most of the water you can get off with gentle shaking (just be certain not to crease the protector!) and more will come off with a little bit of blowing (a keyboard-duster might actually be useful here, although I didn't have one—try not to spit on it if you use your mouth ;)).
13. Now go back to step 7 and to this point until you get it on right!
14. Now that you've gotten it on, centered up and dust-free, it's time to use the little plastic bubble-pusher to get those bubbles out. Start from the center and work the bubbles out towards the edges. You'll need to use a decent amount of force, but don't overdo it, as if you push too hard, the touch-layer may become attached to the LCD-layer in one spot.
15. Once you've got all the dust out, you're done. Congratulations!

I've used Brando screen protectors before and while they have a nice feeling to it (much like writing on paper), they can get scratched if you throw it in your pocket with other things. It's just as difficult as other static-cling protectors with all applicable dust and bubble problems.

I've been using Invisible Shields since then (apparently the same 3M material as BestSkinEver). The lifetime warranty is nice, and the application of the protector is easier than regular ones. I don't know whether BoxWave ones follow the same procedure, but the wet application gets rid of most of the dust and the bubbles disappear after a few days. It's also easier to realign while it's still wet (though you can't really remove it without ruining the screen protector, hence the warranty).

I should order one in anticipation of the N800 being $170 (or less) on Buy.com whenever that happens again. I've got on on my LG VX8500, DS Lite, and iPod 1G (when it worked).
