video calls

At the moment is there any way to google talk with video from pc to nokia n800? or its only n800 to n800 at the moment for video calls?

Gizmo is the only way for N800-to-PC video calls at this time.

Actually you can do video calls via SIP also with any PC SIP client that supports h.263 or h.263+ video. I'm using Eyebeam with it.

Also you should be able to use any PC Jabber client that supports jingle-video. If one existed that is. :D

Re: video calls

Thanks for letting me know about using PC SIP clients. Gizmo's video performance was not good (at the PC receiving end from the N800), so I will definitely try alternatives like Eyebeam.

Is there any way of trying eyebeam before you purchase? I see it costs $45 and wanted to determine the performance before I handed over my money! ;)

I don't think there is a demo of Eyebeam, but you can try downloading X-Lite from them which is sort of a watered down free version.

I have Eyebeam Enhanced, but would advise you to try SightSpeeed first.. it works on Mac and PC effortlessly. Not on N800 unfortunately ;-)

Btw its the iMac version I have..

It looks as though you could attach an N8xx to the Sightspeed network via SIP if you make an extra account there:

http://www.sightspeed.com/index.php?...mid=177#faq286

Also they do support the proper video codecs, so it "should" work between say a N8xx using SIP and a PC using the Sightspeed SIP software.

However the big difference between Sightspeed and Eyebeam is that the Sightspeed software seems to be bound to their service, whereas Eyebeam can connect to any SIP service including a server you run yourself.

Re: video calls

Thanks, that's interesting!

I'll have a look at trying it out in the coming days :-)

Edit: Well I managed to set up a second SIP user on the N800 and after sorting out authentication names, actually made contact!

I can't say the video quality is anything to write home about, we all know the N800's camera spec., but I did receive N800 video on my iMac's Sightspeed app.

Back on the N800 there were moving shapes but I wouldn't call it video.. I can well imagine the N800 doesn't have power enough to handle Sightspeed's quality, and as yet I haven't found a way to reduce the quality..

Still, its a step forward :)

Edit2: The final status is that I can call the N800 from Sightspeed on the iMac and connect ok, the N800 image appears on Sightspeed within seconds, but it can take half a minute or so for a still image to appear on the N800 from Sightspeed.

Calling from the N800 to Sightspeed connects but clearly something goes wrong with the handshake so the connection is dropped 30 sec later.

"So close and yet so far" ;-)

Re: video calls

Ooh! Could you please tell me how you did it? I've tried entering the settings at http://www.sightspeed.com/index.php?...mid=177#faq286 but it didn't work for me - it keeps saying "Network Error". :(

These are the settings I've plugged into the N800...

MAIN A/C SETUP PAGE:
- Username: myemail@blah.com
- Password: mypassword
- Use for PSTN calls: checked

(Under Advanced...)
CONNECTION TAB:
- Transport: UDP
- Outgoing proxy: sip.sightspeed.com
- Port: 5060
- Discover public address: checked
- Keep-alive mechanism: Auto
- Keep-alive frequency: 0

AUTHENTICATION TAB:
- Authentication user name: myemail@blah.com (or is this meant to just be "myemail"?)
- Password: mypassword

STUN
Auto-detect STUN: I have tried checking this as well as entering the following details...
STUN server: stun.sightspeed.com
STUN port: 3478

When I dial the person, I've tried dialing person@blah.com as well as person@sip.sightspeed.com

Am I missing something?

Re: video calls

I really think a client that runs on the N800 that supports H.323 would help (I know..why don't I write one? heh)

Windows ships with Netmeeting which does H.323 video calls fine..there are also lots of free H.323 clients out there..plus the N800 could be used to make video calls to traditional VC units (Polycom or Tandberg)

Another thing H.323 would enable is Multi-point conferencing--which I don't think you can do with the available SIP stuff for N800.

H.323 is simple..dial an IP address..or dial a E.164 alias..it's mature and wide spread..I admit SIP is the future..but..heh..I wanna call H.323!

Thanks for listening

Re: video calls

I've wondered a lot the worth of the videocam issue, since there's so little support. Even Skype does not support video in N800. And most of my friends are using Skype, not Googletalk. And there is no option in Googletalk to use video in PC... anyway, I welcome the soutions when they arrive. During that I've no other option but use PC & Skype when needing video...

ghoonk 2008-02-01 17:24

Re: video calls

Well, Skype is using its own proprietary protocol, whereas SIP already offers video support (voice, video and messaging, from what i understand), so it's just a matter of finding another SIP client that supports video calling and that should work.

I'm guessing that Gizmo is the only SIP client now that supports video, but I could be wrong. If anyone knows of another desktop client that fully supports SIP video, maybe we could test it to confirm if the iT's video calling is limited to working on Gizmo only.

@spamaverter

Sorry, I just noticed your request, but after wasting a day or more trying & re-trying, I'm afraid I gave it up as a bad job that would never work, and ordered a MacBook AIR instead ;-)

Re: video calls

Oh, okay. Nuts! If only we could get it working with SightSpeed - their video implementation blows Skype & Gizmo out of the water (although their GUI could do with some work).

Ref the Authentication user name you just need the myemail part contrary to what Sightspeed support told me when I asked them..

On stun I used both Auto and the other.

Btw, on the main acct page the user name should be person@sip.sightspeed.com

Re: video calls

Thanks for the tip, cintra...

After changing the User Name (on the main page) to "myemail@sip.sightspeed.com", I get "Authentication Error" instead of "Network Error".

So I'm guessing I'm having those authentication issues you mentioned. If your real email address is: "myemail@blah.com" then are you meant to use the following values?

(on main page)
User Name: myemail@sip.sightspeed.com
Password: sightspeedpassword (or is it meant to be "realemailpassword"?)

(on auth page)
Authentication User Name: myemail
Password: sightspeedpassword (or is it meant to be "realemailpassword"?)

It seems odd that there's two authentication fields that basically have the same info. I've tried different combinations, but it still doesn't work. :( Feeling kind of dumb here. :o

It is easy to become confused.. any real email address can be forgotten other than for Sightspeed admin reasons.

All you are interested in on the Main User page is one of your Sightspeed user names/accts. I have two so I can set up a link between them, eg on the iMac its 'cinmac' and on my PC and N800 I use another, 'p4pe228' (my PC is usually off).

From an admin point of view I have given Sightspeed two 'real' email accounts, a different one for each of my user names..

Well basically any SIP client that supports h.263 or h.263+ video will work. There are quite a few out there, but I've used Eyebeam and Linphone just fine with Nokia calls. I've also used another but forget the names off hand. Just wasn't too impressed with it though. Video calls over other SIP clients work pretty well though. Better then Gizmo IMO.

Re: video calls

Okay, I think it's safe to say I need to read a tutorial about sip :>

cintra - that was really weird, i plugged myemail@sip.sightspeed.com & pw on the main page, and myemail2 on the auth page... & then i could dial from my n800, but you're right, although they appear to connect, i didn't get any video or audio. :( the *really* weird thing was that i didn't enter a pw for the auth page. i don't get it. i don't get it at all. :>

moonshine - are you using the windoze version of linphone? on my win box i can connect but it's audio only. it's probably just me. ;P

Re: video calls

I have just tried using my PC (XP) Sightspeed to the N800 Sightspeed account and blow me but it worked perfectly, but for the terrible N800 webcam video quality :)

I also tried using OS X Tiger on the iMac but the result was no better than OS X Leopard.

Re: video calls

regarding n800 video conferencing,

would n't it be nice if all users of this forum decide to edit their forum account details with their gtalk account?

before n8x0 to PC video calling gets easier, we could video call each other.

anyway if anybody wants to test n8x0 to n8x0 video call you can video call mi at

antoniocontent@gmail.com

see ya,

Actually I tried Linphone in Ubuntu. I use Eyebeam under XP/Vista. I'm both cases I'm connecting through an Asterisk server I use for VOIP/video. If your trying to do SIP video through a SIP server/proxy, then it does need to support h.263/h.263+ video also.

cintra: Wtf?!! You're teasing me, right? I'm using xp too... could you maybe post screen captures of your settings (replaced with fake user names)?

I sent you a private message (2) about the screenshots, in case you've missed them

Edit: I booted up the PC again to try something else, and the Sightspeed results right now are the same as the iMac's.. i.e. NOT a clear picture on the N800 from the PC :(

spamaverter 2008-02-04 04:56

Re: video calls

Thanks cintra,

I think there's actually something wrong with one of my SightSpeed accounts - it doesn't authenticate properly - when I used a different account, I was able to log in straight away.

Anyway, I've also come to the conclusion that this is not going to work. Like you said earlier, SightSpeed to N800 calls *kind* of work, but no video on N800 (if you're lucky, you sometimes get a frame once in a blue moon ;). N800 to SightSpeed calls never connect. :~(

Gizmo's craptacular video it is then, *sigh*. I wish Skype would get their act together. :(

spamaverter 2008-02-04 05:42

Re: video calls

Haha! I was messing with the Internet Connection settings in SightSpeed and set it to the highest setting (T1 or higher) - and I got crystal clear video & audio! But, like you, only once! I can't repeat it. :(

So somehow it *is* possible... there's more settings under "Advanced", will play around and see if I can reproduce the result.
