OMG how many can't install threads are there now?
Hi, I'm a new user and I tried to download Python but it comes up failed to download. Or maybe I'm the guy who's fed up the servers aren't responding. It could be that there is a size-mismatch and it can't install.
I think these examples describe about 50% of the posts over the past two days. I just read about ten of them. If these problems are similar to what you get and you are reading this, then do yourself a favor and read the other threads for answers. You WILL find them. I promise. I'll also promise to lower taxes, walk your dog, and make you biscuits while fathering your web skills and unending trails of questions that have been plainly answered in the thread below or above this one. The General is more blunt when it comes to newbie issues, I tend to be a bit more subtle.:p Kudos to him and an apology is in order as well.:) I don't consider research to be more difficult than just reading what's in front of you. Unfortunately this is what some people are incapable of, or they are just used to posting in chat forums or MySpace accounts. Usually I'm grateful to answer Q's, but this one has been beaten to death many times over. I give no links to your answer because it's up to you to take control and stop expecting personal help with this question as you can already see in troubleshooting and n800 forums plenty of these identical posts which only take five minutes to read. |
Re: OMG how many can't install threads are there now?
I'm just off to start the "Smeg nothing will install" Topic :)
Good point though and well made. |
Re: OMG how many can't install threads are there now?
Why are you still reading this post? I'm not changing your Technology diaper. You're a big boy now... Time to get potty-trained. Now put on your glasses and your shoes so you have them, and read all about the misfortunes of other disgruntled N800 newbies. Here's my hand, and my wallet of knowledge. Go on, now.
Don't forget to vote in the poll above. What's that? You don't see a pole? It must be in your ears cause I already told you and you didn't listen. If'n I ain't the granddaddy of all liars!:D ROFLMAO!!! |
Re: OMG how many can't install threads are there now?
botom line: maemo website/repositories sucks!!!
if you want easy help you wont get it ;P unless someone hosts a copy of Python runtime 2.5.(please do) The repositories are "working" right now every app should download unless stated! The only problem with MOST apps that dont install is because python runtime dependencies and most of its components are extremely corrupted, the deb files were impropely packaged and the app manager rejects them and the python runtime itself is COMPLETELY MISSING from the repositories it recognises the files must be there but they arent, if you search the repo manually by using just the web browser, you'll get to that conclusion. Now my only question is: The most IMPORTANT package/deb/program that makes most of all the other apps work is missing or currupted!??? the repositories are not being "hammered", they are just not being managed and instead of just getting on the server and replacing the files - they havent done anything about it for the past 2 weeks. I'am tired of this, so can someone host and post a link to a working python 2.5 deb file, its the holidays thousands of ppl got an it for xmas and want to expand th it's capabilities. If maemo doesnt take responsibility of this matter that we must! if they can't handle hosting repos let someone do it for them! This might be quite radical but it is time for a change, and we are all tired of all the threads that lead to the same conclusion |
Re: OMG how many can't install threads are there now?
You're absolutley right.
I'm a newby and had the same problem and looked on the forums and found the answer (pat myself on the back). In fact I think I'm going to start another thread now about how many people are starting a new thread on this topic as well :) On a serious note though. Is it not possible to put it in as a sticky on a couple of the forums. And preferably on the main page (above latest posts). I think a lot of people go straight from the main page to the different threads, so may not see the stickies Zuber |

Re: OMG how many can't install threads are there now?
yes yes YES!!!!!!! IHAVE FOUND THE SOLUTION!!!!
ps: if it was on a diff post don't tell me! let me enjoy my glory:p easy to get python, uknmp, kagu to install in a breeze 1st-do what the uy above said and clear ur device of all the repo ALL OFF Them! 2nd- create a new repo in the app manager -name it whateva u want -type this url http://stage.maemo.org/extras -here's the catch that made it impossible for apps to install, make sure th distribution box is EMPTY that's what made the app manager crash! -components: free non-free - that's it! 3rd- i recomend you install python runtime first as in case it fails again you allready will have what you need! 4th- Download and install all u want, it all works for me !! i spend the last 3 hours experimenting untill it finally worked! i am going to make a thread of this announcement :D so all the new users have some guidance |

Re: OMG how many can't install threads are there now?
If I assume you mean IT2008, then this is overkill. All you need to do is change the links to any repositories that read "http://repository.maemo.org" to "http://repostory.maemo.org". It's not rocket science. This worked for me at the beginning of the week - when who ever it was posted the solution. Took me 3 or 4 mins to make the changes and then refresh repo list. After that, Python just installed.
One thing you have incorrectly stated - from what I can tell, the python runtime installer actually pulls down a bunch of dependancies at the time of install - it was one or more of the dependancies that was causing the problem (which could be verified by manually grabbing the debs via the command line. The python runtime seems to pull down about 6 or 7 files (MIGHT BE MORE - THIS IS A ROUGH ESTIMATE FROM MEMORY.) Quote:

Most of the people who buy the N800 consider it to be rocket science, BTW. Just because you or I or xPAKx can figure things out and research the subject, and solve the issue, doesn't mean everyone can. There are still a couple nagging issues that I can't solve either, so I guess some of it is rocket science to me as well! :D |
Re: OMG how many can't install threads are there now?
"YES!!!!!!! IHAVE FOUND THE SOLUTION!!!!"
Thanks. That removed the only obstacle I had to installing PyGTKEditor. And I already had Python run time installed, along with every other app I wanted, including Canola2 and lots of others.... go figure. |
Re: OMG how many can't install threads are there now?
- i'd rather see a poll asking:
"The problem with maemo.org is:" 1. Someone at Nokia is incompetent. 2. Someone at Nokia ticked off a developer with access to maemo.org. 3. There is malicious activity going on at maemo.org. 4. The repositories are being emptied deliberately. (i'd be inclined to vote for 1, 3, or 4; at any rate it is very interesting that the very day a workaround for the broken repository is posted, the stage.repository dir was emptied of all .deb files) Why Nokia is doing this is beyond comprehension. |
