Re: Ripping DVD to N800
Do a search on this site. There are at least 4 separate projects (3 from the Open Source community and 1 from Nokia) all designed to convert videos for playback on your IT

Re: Ripping DVD to N800
Handbrake is available for Mac, Windows and Linux. Windows requires .NET framework V2 or later.
On my Athlon X2 5200+, it converts a 90 minute widescreen DVD to a 400x224 .mp4 (which is probably the format you want) in about 10 minutes. Before you convert, ripping with DVDFab HD Decrypter (or similar program) may be necessary, and that'll add another 10 or so minutes (depending on system speed, drive speed and disc quality). And then there's the time to copy the resulting file (~650M using 512/128Kb video/audio rates) into the device -- about 10 minutes going over USB to my external-slot SDHC card. Using scp over wifi seems a lot slower, unfortunately. :( |

Re: Ripping DVD to N800
I've been able to get a DVD down to 300MB using Handbrake. Key is the level of of compression you give the audio tracks, how many artifacts you can live with in the video. I can live with a few for a 50% size reduction.

Re: Ripping DVD to N800
FWIW, I have found that if I rip with Handbrake and turn on preserve aspect ratio (turn off PAR), the resulting video looks better.
Also, as someone else said, after getting to mp4, you need to convert to the nokia format. I also spent some days and google searches finding this out. I actually did read the documentation that comes with it, in less than perfect detail, I'll admit. If this detail is in that users guide, I missed it. Would it hurt them (she gripes) to cover the basics in the docs they supply with the tablet? Beth |
Re: Ripping DVD to N800
Doesn't Handbrake have N800 preset?

Re: Ripping DVD to N800
Also worth a look is the Amadis Video Converter (it isn't free) see
http://www.amadis-soft.com/video_converter.htm You will still need to RIP, but it has the advantage of producing a video output that can be used directly on the Nokia N8xx - I set to 352 x 240 and export as AVI. no need to reconvert from MP4. |
Re: Ripping DVD to N800
I have ripped quite a few DVD's to MP4 format so I could play on my PSP ... will these work on the N800 'as is' or do they need some more converting?

Re: Ripping DVD to N800
I hv downloaded the handbrake and install in my pc. I converted the "TS_Video" into a mp4 file. However, the final mp4 file cannot be understood by any player. Does anyone know why? Also, an 1hr movie took me more than 1hr for conversion. It seems that the program is very slow, isn't it? My PC is Duo Core 2.0 with 2GB Ram already :(

Re: Ripping DVD to N800
I think there have already been a dozen or so threads on this, I even wrote an article on it with instructions ;)
