nWiki - mini-Wikipedia on your N800
 

- really like my new n800, and i'm always looking for new content for reading offline... besides getting all the Doc Savage novels and Gutenberg books, i also wanted a small copy of Wikipedia for reading through a file:// URL...

- after a bit of searching on the 'net, i ended up with a cache of 2,000 articles in a directory on my 4gb removable card...

- first, i went to here, then followed the links to a torrent download, such as one from here

- after downloading, i mounted the .iso image, then copied the html directory onto my card... i then launched the n800 browser, and used the web page menu to open:

html/art/d/w.html

and set a bookmark named as nWiki

- this page contains a category index to the wiki content... alternatively you can click a link at the bottom of this page to go to an alphabetical listing of all the articles...

- now i have plenty of reading material!

- and the content only requires 435mb of card storage...

- hope this helps someone looking for a nice collection of off-line material...

You could actually have mounted the iso on your n800 using penguinbaits cdrom driver support (to allow iso9660 iso mounting).

I agree its nice to have offline wikipedia! It takes forever to copy individual files though so doing the above or copying a single zip might be better.

If you feel the need for more information, you can try the wikipedia for schools distribution which is 830megs (with thumbnails) or 2.6gb (larger images).

The alternative I use is sdict (see thread: http://www.internettablettalk.com/fo...ighlight=sdict)

It is essentially a dictionary program which allows for both explanatory dictionaries (for example Merriam-Webster's) and translations (love the English - Spanish and Spanish - English). As a big bonus you can also get wikipedia to work on it (all articles! without graphics). It is a very simple procedure. Just install sdict viewer for the IT and download the dictionaries you want at http://www.sdict.com/en/. Note that the english wikipedia collection consists of 3 files.

http://www.sdict.com/en/wikipedia.php has an sdict-version of wikipedia with over 1 million articles. Works fine with the sdict-viewer on the tablets. It is available for a lot of other languages too.

- interesting page! however, going through the sourceforge site for a python runtime install results in 'corrupted install package' via the python2.5 for maemo page, along with uninstallable (install failures of) python applications/libs in the app manager on my OS2007 n800 (some form of 'dependency hell'? didn't think i'd get that on a Deb-based Fink-related system... i've at least learned to click on the 'info' button before attempting an install)

- oh well... i'll try the sdict clients on some other boxen first...

- definitely some good pointers on other off-line content here! tks to all...

EDIT: fixed the dependency issue (was missing a repo def; HOWEVER, the python2.5 runtime package comes up as CORRUPTED from the repository: "Unable to install. Installation file is corrupted"

a known issue noted here!

EDIT#2: issue resolved! the gnumeric 'plug-ins' package was the cause of my inability to download and then install python2.5 runtime; i now have sdictview running on my os2007 n800 and i like it!

I still have original file so i am seeding that torrent now (and i'll keep seeding until you get it if you want).

- fortunately it is still available... unfortunately, no one is seeding the full version!

linux_author or pipeline or any guru: what do you mean by actually mount the .iso on your N800? Do you need a physical USB drive, or you just mount the .iso file directly from mmc1?

when using the .iso file, do you have to extract it, or you just search it on the fly? By the way, mind to leave some down to earth simple instructions? My linux education level is limited to open up xterm and sudo gainroot, yup, :)
