Any way to get rid of the "contacts" icon?
 

Hi. Is there a way to get rid of or replace the contacts button on the left menu?

Yea it's useless for me. I'd also like to get rid of Skype and Rapsody from the "my selection"

I kicked them off the list via control panel>personalization>navigation>organize applications.

What about the opposite, such as adding an application to the MENU?

I like the Internet Radio applet, but I don't want to tie up screen space with the ugly UI that came with the N800.

Since the applet is already installed how can you add it to the menu?

Same here... I'd like to be able to have what I want, or don't, on the top level menu.

Short answer: There seems no way to do this with GUI tools.

Alternative answer: This is Linux. You can do what you want. You'll have to get into the config files for the window manager (matchbox, I think).

Follow up: Do you want to get into hacking at this level? In order for the N800 to be accessible to the general public, some sacrifices have been made. One of the major sacrifices I can see, and I'm willing to live with it, is very tight control by Nokia over the OS structure. If you go screwing with that, and using third party repositories is risky enough, you take the chance that some Nokia update down the road will pooch the whole thing because you changed a setting Noikia assumed would never change. So... hack away, but keep your OS images, and flashing tools handy.

This works, but for me it took lots of patience and determination/persistence. I had to move most items several times, and I also rearranged the menus to make the moves more direct. Wish I could say what makes it work or fail but I couldn't quite figure it out.

I was not able to get "Contacts" to disappear from the Home screen. Its seems rather complicated but I will keep trying.. If any would could post a step-by-step itr woulb be great. UI want to keep the Home screen as clean as possible by removing unsued icons. Thanks

i suppose you could mask it with a custom theme, but the place it takes up will still be there.

Navigation has been (in OS2008) replaced by Panels. Thus making it more obscure and easier to copyright.

The above instructions apply to the 'Applications' menu. The main menu can be rearranged also, but none of the three base icons can be removed. Annoying, ain't it?

In panels I click "organize" next to Applications to try to delete everything in the My selections folder but it doesn't let me. I don't need Rhapsody, skype, that media player short cut, the images shortcut, or the help icon/

i think you can delete only folders you create. uninstall the application if you don't need it or create a folder and move it there.

Wow, thanks for clearing that up. I though it was just me. That is wierd, I hope some more customizable themes come out soon that can have the side bar auto hide or something...

It's not about the theme. It's the way themes work on the Nokia implementation.

There's a thread around somewhere about an alternative window manager - Fluxbox, or Blackbox, I think - that may be the solution for you. But that's some serious hacking.
