To reduce the number of cables I'd have to carry around, a gender changer which also grounded the correct pin stuck on the end of the stock cable would be fantastic.
My understanding is that that can't be done: the relevant pin is only present in the special 5-pin connectors and is not wired through to the other end, nor is it available in normal USB connectors (which only have 4 pins).

This issue of not having to carry 2 cables around means I probably won't bother to buy a "host mode" cable even when I can get one. Using the Nokia cable plus a gender changer and controlling the mode from the command line means I only need one cable (plus the gender changer) and I can either use it to connect devices to the N810 or use it to connect the N810 to my laptop (for example when I want to download a video, convert it on my laptop in my hotel room and copy it to my N810 for watching on a plane later).

Damn, should've read up more on it. I suppose it would be possible - but unlikely to be viable - to have two small adapters: one from Micro-USB B to Micro-USB A and one from USB-A Female to USB-A Female. Then you use the stock lead with an adapter at each end ;-)

Alternatively, a custom cable which pipes the pin all the way through, allowing a gender-changer style adapter at the end to ground it or not as appropriate.

Agreed. We just need to add a better USB status bar applet - and find a decent source for the gender changer adapters, and low power Ethernet dongles - all in the UK.

Exciting times...

Anybody seen a powered hub they like?

Re: n810 USB adapter and host mode made easy

My favorite powered hub is an earlier version of the very inexpensive inland 7 port hub (mine has power and peripheral LEDs, and included the power adapter):

http://www.microcenter.com/single_pr...uct_id=0236864
or
http://www.microcenter.com/single_pr...uct_id=0260562

(search for hub - they have other variations which might be better)

My plan is big-5v-battery -> hub -> charge n810 // n810 -> hub (host mode) // hub -> peripherals // hub -> recharge BT perhpherals. With 7 ports there are enough to do that.

UNIVERSAL CONNECTIONS WITH 3 ITEMS

I do nearly everything with both my n800 and n810 with three items. The first is my motorola microB to miniB short cable (easily modified for host mode) and a mini-b to USB A Female adapter modified to short pins 4 and 5 of the mini-B end. This gives host mode. The last bit is a mini-b to usb A male retractable cable when I want to connect with a computer, but it is mostly unused. I have a series of microSD tiny usb flash drives which fit nicely into the host mode adapter and it is faster and less disruptive to use them v.s. plugging in the Nokias.

Would be nice to make a Wiki page to list all the card readers, external hard drives, etc. that are supported by the N810 / N800. I found out that some SD card readers work and some others don't. For example, my cheap SD noname card reader works and the Hama highspeed SD card reader does not.

2 Attachment(s)
I was going to modify a cable or adapter but ended up using the following:

Nikkai L16BT (available from Maplins in UK), see photo at bottom of post.

The adapter does not provide auto switching, to do this I then followed the "A Simple Method of setting the N8X0 with OS2008 to host mode - 'Extras' App" instructions in this link:

http://www.internettablettalk.com/wi..._using_OS_2008

The instructions provides "USB Host" and "USB otg" menus as shown in second photo.

I think this provides an easy way to switch modes without the need to modify cables etc.

That photo looks a little different from my N810.

I wonder how the battery reacts to hooking up a usb thumb like this to play movies and audio as opposed to a mini/micro sd card?

Re: n810 USB adapter and host mode made easy

Hello Guys,

I´m absolutely new to this stuff. Maybe someone could help me with some info and konfiguration.

I do have a n810 and would like to use a usb modem.

I do know that the "Kernel" does support a usb modem usage but the problem is how to connect the usb device to usb micro. Is that so far correct?

Can anybody support me to get this combination done? (n810+usb modem e.g. huwaei 220 or similar+succesfull connection to the www)

Any help is appreciated!

If you are interested in using a USB-attached VGA screen, see this thread: http://www.internettablettalk.com/fo...ad.php?t=19566
