I'm trying to get a business card scanner working, but even through a powered hub the n810 keeps rebooting. Anyone have any ideas?

Just found the exact cable I was looking for: a USB micro A to standard female A, 7.5 cm.

This cable lets you plug in a keyboard, flash drive, etc. and causes the N810 to automatically switch to host mode when used.

So, if you have a bunch of movie files on a flash drive, the Nokia will play it using usb control as a bridge? Could I get Mplayer to play divx on a flash drive using usb control?

Yes. I use the Electronic Products Online really neat swivel adapter. N8xx gadgets are here:

so you can rotate the female USB jack around behind the tablet WITHOUT stressing the tablet's connector mechanically.

Plug n Play. You plug it in and the tablet goes in OTG/Host mode. You unplug it and the tablet goes back to normal. No software to install and suck up memory...nothing to "run".

I use it with USB drives, a rubber rollup USB keyboard, a 1TB Western Digital Mybook USB hard drive, the Linksys USB100M Ethernet-to-USB adapter (USB200M WILL NOT WORK!), and a LiteOn USB DVD/CD burner, but it doesn't burn, just reads. Ignore the non-compatible and no file system found error messages. Typing over rdesktop to my PC remotely with a full Windows keyboard lets all the function keys on the WinXP box work remotely. Typing on the rubber keyboard is MUCH better than a bluetooth flogging along.

My experience is that the Media Player cannot actually play MP3's stored on a USB connected device -- I could copy files to and from and I could play the MP3's when I copied them onto the memory cards in my N81- but I couldn't get them to play properly when playing them directly from the attached device. They stalled and stuttered. My guess was that there was some internal bus bandwidth problem when using the DSP and the USB interface at the same time.

I would be interested to hear if it works for anyone else.

Got my Female to Female adapter and used the Nokia cable to hook it up to a 16 GB flash drive. I copied a bunch of mp3 files and a few divx movies over to the flash drive and started usb control. File Manager opened up, so I clicked on an mp3 file, media player started and played fine without having to copy it over to internal memory first. Tried it with all various bitrate mp3's and didn't have any issues. Obviously I couldn't run the divx files using media player, but mplayer played the movie at about 90% smooth. Struggles just a little bit with fast action scenes, but perfectly watchable. Used Mplayer's settings to fix any minor video / audio sync issues, but overall I was very impressed by the usb transfer speeds with an 800 mb divx movie and having very little frame rate issues. Probably sucks the battery, but carrying a 64gb flash drive around opens up possibilities with lots of music and lots of divx movies on the road.

It's plugged into a 1TB Western Digital hard drive and both media player and mplayer access it, directly, very fast. I like the hardware solution as there's nothing to load into what little memory it has. Divx movies used to stutter with the software USB Host switches, but this hardware dongle doesn't max out the CPU gage playing DivX, now.

Hope this helps....but mine are both N800's under Diablo.

What's crazy is I can load one of the 16GB SDHC cards in it FASTER plugging the big USB drive into the tablet's dongle, than the WinXP much faster box can load the 16GB SDHC plugged into a USB2 card adapter. Go figure...???

The hardware/software issue only regards how switching to host mode is done, but the actual data transfer is separate, and is handled the same either way. If you're seeing a difference, I'd guess the cable you were using with software-switching is likely to blame, not the switching method itself.

Agreed... for what it's worth when doing initial testing I did find that not all female-female USB gender changers were created equally... some worked no problem, others introduced all kinds of weird loss and failings. Anyways, I'm biased of course, but I rather fancy the swivel adapter ;-)
