Re: OS2008 Instant Messaging Upgrades

RTCOMM 2008 beta just had a ruck of updates in the app manager today. anyone know what the changes/fixes are in the latest rally of beta updates...?

Re: OS2008 Instant Messaging Upgrades

Well my "update" to the 2.2 beta was pretty ugly. First try failed failed to update one of the depencies, so it just bailed out on the update. Second try "failed" also but now all the updated packages are listed as installed, but "broken". Yet things seem to work still. Not sure what to think.

Is there any reasonibly safe was to force a reinstall of the latest beta? maybe via dpkg?

Re: OS2008 Instant Messaging Upgrades

I just installed via apt-get install rtcom-beta-os2008 via the terminal to get it to install for me. otherwise, it failed even in red pill mode.

Updated via apt-get upgrade a very hours ago. No changes noticed thus far.

Re: OS2008 Instant Messaging Upgrades

one thing since my update is that I can no longer open the mail client for some reason. It still shows me when new mails arrive and allows me to read them if I click them on the app switcher but it wont allow me to get to them via the full mail client. Have tried a full power down and restart to no avail.

First try with the update just now worked a charm in red pill mode.

Re: OS2008 Instant Messaging Upgrades

I ended up having to run the "broken" packages through dpkg --configure. All seems well now other then:

Contact status still seems to have a bunch bugs for me. (ie. ICQ users show "available" in the contact list, but then show "away" when you go to chat with them. They are actually N/A so they should be "away" everywhere. Also I often show "away" in the chat windows when I'm certainly "online")

Looks like the SIP video call startup bug is still in there also. :(

I'm seeing the same thing. Email Inbox and Compose E-mail won't launch from the contacts panel. However E-mail will launch via its icon in the application panel. And tthe compose window can be launched from apps like the browser. Seems like the contacts panel wasn't updated or has a bug now.

Re: OS2008 Instant Messaging Upgrades

just updated to 2.3. No problems with the install thru red pill mode. Havent noticed any differences yet. Would be really nice if they could list the changes.

Re: OS2008 Instant Messaging Upgrades

A SIP video call bug I reported has been marked fixed, but I'll have to test it out tomorrow. I'm very hopeful. :)

Maybe some other ICQ users could verify this bug and commment if they see the same behavior.

https://bugs.maemo.org/show_bug.cgi?id=2950

I think it's a rather important one for icq, I'd hate to see it in the next OS update.

Has the Contacts program always allowed you to merge contacts?

I hadn't noticed it before this most recent update, but I haven't really spent a lot of time in the menus, either.

Well the SIP video call bug I've been watching has been fixed. I'm psyched. :D Audio/video are quite good using ulaw/h.263+ with the PC Eyebeam client. While MSN, Skype, or Yahoo video chat would be more convienent, at least there is a quality option that works now.

I have been disappointed by the Gizmo video ( N800 <-> PC ), so I've been hoping for another alternative. Your mention of Eyebeam got my hopes up, but then I discovered that it is a pay product. Unless it truly is a good-quality system, there's no reason for me to buy it.

Is there a free alternative to the Eyebeam client?

Moonshine 2008-02-19 19:48

Re: OS2008 Instant Messaging Upgrades

X-lite is the free version of Eyebeam:

http://www.counterpath.com/x-lite.html

I believe it does handles h.263 video also. I remember seeing a post from someone using it here on ITT.

Of course there are other SIP apps that support video as well. Just need to make sure it supports h.263 or h.263+ for video. On linux I've used Linphone which seemed to work fine also.

What are you trying to download/install? The apps I mentioned in my post are all SIP clients for PCs. The tablet has a SIP client built-in already, which they have been improving.

I'm an ***! I thought I needed to load it on both PC and nit. Thanks again.

Did this app always have speed contacts for the desktop?

I think so. I have an applet for it and I haven't installed the beta upgrade yet.

Yes...

But at some point they forced them to use the larger image/avatar view rather then list view. I really wish they made that an option like it is in the contacts app. IMO it's far too chunky otherwise. There is even a bug report about it.

For chat, is there a way to customize the contact list? maybe show only online users and to have the contacts be smaller so we can fit more to a page?

If you set the contacts app to use list view, the applet uses it too, from what I remember.

I'm afraid not, but I'm hopeful every release.

Maybe everyone can comment on issues like this one in bugzilla:

everything works fine after the install. logging into msn is fine. only problem is i can't initiate a chat session with any of my msn contacts, but if they initiate the chat, i can reply no problem. is this a known bug?

Re: OS2008 Instant Messaging Upgrades

Not sure if this was asked and answered already (or even an issue for anyone else) but I'm having difficulties getting my contacts to show up after the install. The google talk worked fine (before and after) but getting AIM contacts to download from the server seems to be the biggest headache. I don't know if running the software on the pc and tablet might be causing the screw up, but it doesn't seem to be a problem for google talk. Anyone else have a problem getting contacts to load automatically?

Re: OS2008 Instant Messaging Upgrades

All the buddies show up no problem for me. The problem that I'm having is that they show up twice or three times per person per state. In the chat screen one person will take up much of the screen and they are ALL the aim address.

Re: OS2008 Instant Messaging Upgrades

alright I got the contacts to work again (not sure how or why) but now the new problem is once I add a yahoo account, the AIM field in the contact details section disappears and the icon becomes a yahoo icon. When I remove the yahoo account, the AIM icon appears next to a screename and if you go to add field, it's showing up, but if you add the yahoo account again, it disappears from the add field and gets labeled as a yahoo contact.

Not sure if this is a bug, but it might have something to do with the fact that my account name on aim and yahoo are exactly the same. Curious if this is also just my luck?

Re: OS2008 Instant Messaging Upgrades

Ok, I have no idea what I'm doing wrong so maybe SOMEONE can help me. When this update first came out in January, I downloaded it, had no problem and worked perfectly. A couple weeks ago, my n800 crashed and resulted in my having to reflash it. Unfortunately I can no longer get this working I can download the installer fine, but whenever I run it, it says "Unable to install.
Software contains updates to packages installed from a different source and is likely to harm the system.
Contact software author.
Continue installing?"

When I click ok it loads for a second and then says "unable to install rtcom-beta-os2008"

Any advice?

UPDATE: Now it seems that I can't install ANYTHING not even first party nokia apps...

Are you using the same address for multiple IM accounts? I had this problem when my Google Talk and MSN addresses were the same. I couldn't find any solution so I disabled my MSN account :(

I'm a little worried about that as there are some serious "presense" bugs that I've seen on multiple units running the RTCOM beta. They are in Bugzilla but there hasn't been any comment yet. I think the hard part is the some of them people wouldn't see unless they are testing things with contacts they control.

I'll just tack on another bug I'm noticing. Checking the contact details anyone with an AIM account is showing up with a Yahoo icon instead. If I click on a merged contact and select Chat, i get a list of all their accounts, but also many duplicates of their AIM account to choose from. If I scroll down to the bottom, I'll see the correct list with status icons next to them, so I know that's what I should choose. To add to this twist, if I go in and edit contact details and delete a blank field (Gizmo Phone or Link-local if the contact doesn't have one), the field will return after I close, but going back and retrying to chat with a merged contact doesn't show the duplicate fields anymore.

Fun stuff, anyone else dealing with this? I still think this may be related to the fact that both my yahoo and aim account share the exact same screename, but I doubt I'm the only one who uses the same name on multiple protocols.

+1 Presence issues. That's what I'm hoping to see fixed. This is a primary feature for me and having it work properly is more important to me than new features. xmmp is where presence is very useful and where I'm seeing the bugs. stand alone apps seem to work but I want the simple "accounts" presence to work better, the apps kick off from there.
