Re: OS2008 Instant Messaging Upgrades
Having just updated I've been wondering the same.
I imagine it's because it's still got too many significant bugs, e.g. status. I was expecting these would have been resolved, ready for diablo. Oh well, at least this still works with Diablo. |
Re: OS2008 Instant Messaging Upgrades
how did you get this to work?
i followed the instructions closely and got a missing packages error. |
Re: OS2008 Instant Messaging Upgrades
You have to be in "red pill" mode.

Re: OS2008 Instant Messaging Upgrades
humm. i was in red pill mode. i'll try again.

Re: OS2008 Instant Messaging Upgrades
Change the collabora, and rtcomm repos in application manager. Change them from the blank distrobution to say "chinook" (without quotes)

maemo extras maybe?

When the "Distribution" line is left blank for a repository, the Application Manager will substitute in the version of the OS your tablet runs, in this case "Diablo". As RTCOMM Beta needs bits from maemo Extras "Chinook", this isn't very helpful. As you go through the RTCOMM Beta installation instructions, watch what each step does. One of the .INSTALL files creates the unhelpful maemo Extras repository entry. After it does so, take a short break from following the instructions, and fix up Application Manager's repository list before proceeding. Either make sure you have only one "maemo Extras" entry that has "Chinook Diablo" on the Distribution line, or have two separate entries, "maemo Extras (Chinook)" and "maemo Extras (Diablo)", with corresponding "Chinook" and "Diablo" Distribution lines. |
Re: OS2008 Instant Messaging Upgrades
Just "Maemo Chinook", minus the Extras, was the missing link for me.
i.e. URL without /extras prefix: URL: http://repository.maemo.org/ Distribution:chinook Components: free non-free |
Re: OS2008 Instant Messaging Upgrades
Just a heads up: If ICQ (e.g. via Pidgin/GAIM) doesn't work then that is because AOL dropped support for older ICQ versions. Many clients using the ICQ protocol suffered from this problem. Some can easily fix it in config others need a patch in software. For Pidgin, you need new software, IIRC 2.4.3 solved it. But, if it isn't packaged yet you're out of luck.
|
Re: OS2008 Instant Messaging Upgrades
I seem to have lost the ability to log into ICQ on RTCOMM just this week... Is that because of this situation?

Seems to get stuck at the connection stage without actually generating any errors. i.e. Disabling all protocols except ICQ causes the tray icon to blink Off / On continuously - Doesn't seem to timeout. |
Re: OS2008 Instant Messaging Upgrades
Yes, exactly. That's what's happening all of a sudden. AIM still works, it is just ICQ. My old Gaim client still can log in on my desktop, but not my tablet.

out of the box, this tablet is great, and with a little tinkering it can do so much that a regular computer does. |

Maybe its fixed in rtcomm SVN? If this exists? Maybe their development page says more. You won't be the only one who noticed this thats for sure. If you're not scared for command line you can consider on your server running SSH + Bitlbee (recently updated since suffered from same problem as Pidgin) + Irssi + Screen, then from NIT SSH to the server. I like these solutions because they make the NIT more a thin client. Especially for networked applications they work; you need a network anyway to use the application. An application like Kopete can be fixed by simply changing the configuration to update to ICQ protocol v6. Nifty IMO. |
Re: OS2008 Instant Messaging Upgrades
Maybe we just need the new libpurple. Anyone compile it?

Ok, I tried shoehorning the latest libpurple0 from Debian sid onto my tablet, and that fixed ICQ but broke MSN. So I put back the maemo version and just replaced liboscar, and that fixed ICQ. (I also did a lot of trial & error)
Download the attached file. As root, unzip it: Code:
gunzip liboscar.so.0.0.0.gzCode:
cp liboscar.so.0.0.0 /usr/lib/purple-2/ |

That looks great, but can you write a simple step by step guide how to do that, so a lay user like me can enjoy that too? Thankyou |
Re: OS2008 Instant Messaging Upgrades
It already is a SIMPLE step by step guide...
download => root => unzip (gunzip liboscar.so.0.0.0.gz) => copy (cp liboscar.so.0.0.0 /usr/lib/purple-2/) => enjoy |

Re: OS2008 Instant Messaging Upgrades
If you downloaded the file and didn't choose a specific folder, you probably downloaded it to /home/user/MyDocs/
This page explains how to get root. You will need it to copy the file. So:

Re: OS2008 Instant Messaging Upgrades
Excuse me, jumped in late on this one, but how far from being finished is this built in messenger from being finished and available for us non admin types?
|
Re: OS2008 Instant Messaging Upgrades
Try downloading again, but this time click and hold on the link, then select Save Target As...
From this screen you might want to change the location to somewhere that's easier to find. |

Re: OS2008 Instant Messaging Upgrades
6 months on from installing this add on and im still not able 2 see my msn contact list (albeit i have 700+ contacts) but even still, does anyone have any ideas as to how i can be able to see them?
thanks, chin |
Re: OS2008 Instant Messaging Upgrades
the contacts list should have the ability to sort on msn if you have the msn account active...
|
Re: OS2008 Instant Messaging Upgrades
i do have the msn account active...it seems as though im just one of the unlucky few who can't seem to get the contact list to show...what would you suggest i do to resolve this issue?
thanks, chin |
Re: OS2008 Instant Messaging Upgrades
did you enter any kind of nickname while setting up the msn account?
i recall there being some kind of issue with msn if a nickname was not set in the account settings. |
Re: OS2008 Instant Messaging Upgrades
i have entered a nickname..perhaps its due to the fact that i have loads of contacts and would take an excessive amount of time to download them?
|
Re: OS2008 Instant Messaging Upgrades
dont know, and i dont see why. unless one is talking contacts in the millions, they are basically just email addresses tied into a database at the server end of things...
but then im not familiar with the actual insides of the msn protocol or its implementation in maemo... |
