Re: OS2008 Instant Messaging Upgrades
looks lyk ive tried sooner than expected :)
n saturn ur suggestion proved to be right...it is because i have a huge amount of contacts... guess i'll av 2 delete a few contacts :D |
Re: OS2008 Instant Messaging Upgrades
MSN contact list is serverside so your NIT is downloading the contact list like crazy, and then the GUI needs to add all of them. Besides, would be difficult to find the user you are looking for.

Re: OS2008 Instant Messaging Upgrades
i had to add rtcomm-beta-os2008 to get the accounts to work properly.
before that i could enter new accounts but they would not show up on the list... |
Re: OS2008 Instant Messaging Upgrades
Are they posting a changelog or anything with these recent updates? I'd like to know what they're fixing/breaking...lol.
Wonder if they'll get around to ever add facebook and myspace IM to the list of services. |

Turned out that I had installed the Collabra catalog for Diablo distribution with component being "user". This was missing the telepathy-haze app (I think) - I had to install the Collabra catalog for chinook (component being "haze salut idle") to get that app. Only after that I was able to setup the accounts. Although I had to go and delete the multiple accounts from the control panel that I had created initially during the issue. |
Re: OS2008 Instant Messaging Upgrades
collabra with diablo and user should give you haze, at least it did so for me before i installed the SSU.
but chinook should have haze salut idle. problem is that the only way to discover this (for me at least) was to aim a web browser at the collabra repo and have a look around on my own. all in all, its a kind of funny error given that the ui works but do not give the expected result (a error message somewhere). |
Re: OS2008 Instant Messaging Upgrades
I just discovered, for my great surprice, that I can send instant messages using the vanilla Diablo SIP client to other Nokia tablet using SIP. We both have Sipphone (Gizmo) account. I'm wondering if it is "normal" to have instant messaging working through SIP?
Gizmo does have its instant messaging, so it could be that the Sipphone proxy is special case to support this. Maybe someone else with "vanilla SIP proxy" can try this? (And just a reminder that video calls between two tablets using Sipphone SIP service works fine using the built in SIP client... no need to install Gizmo client.) |
Re: OS2008 Instant Messaging Upgrades
sip, as a protocol, is just a session setup system. it can carry any kind of data on top of it that you want to, be it video, voice or text, or even files if so wanted...

Re: OS2008 Instant Messaging Upgrades
ugh, there is one to many variants of libpurple floating around, and the only one that i have been able to log onto msn with is the one from the collabora repo, and it pulls in a 20MB pidgin-data package!

Re: OS2008 Instant Messaging Upgrades
Is MSN available officially..? or is it still a beta ?
if the upgrade is official.. can anyone tell me how to get it? im a noob.. need specific, easy words, step by step instructions.. thank you :) |

checking the package in app manager shows that libpurple0 (2.4.3-collabora1) depends on it, and therefor cant be removed. it again is tied to telepathy-haze. |

HIH Edit: did a quick check and it gives a network error with a hotmail account. I think that's equal to msn (?) |
Re: OS2008 Instant Messaging Upgrades
i think i tried it, and all i got was "network error"...
and yes, hotmail accounts are the easiest way to get msn going. altho you can use other mail accounts to (but they need to be verified first, hotmail accounts are pre-verified so to speak). sometimes i wish that there was a way to show non-system libs without going red pill. oh, and the dependencies tab as well! ;) |

Re: OS2008 Instant Messaging Upgrades
seems to me they need to support the full range of functions that pidgin provides...or even better , just have pidgin integrated as they did with modest...but perhaps polish the UI and graphics a bit to fit in with everything
|
Re: OS2008 Instant Messaging Upgrades
thats basically what they are doing. they are using the pidgin libs in the background but putting their own ui on top...
|
Re: OS2008 Instant Messaging Upgrades
Are there any work in progress and any news when beta 3 or a final version is coming? there are some smaller bugs that needs to be fixed before its fully usable..
Im currently using Pidgin and I'm quite happy with it.. however having it abit more built in would be nice.. |
Re: OS2008 Instant Messaging Upgrades
i would love to see a workable telepathy-haze that do not pull in some 20MB of pidgin graphics files...
|
Re: OS2008 Instant Messaging Upgrades
I've managed to get everything working in Diablo messaging, including telepathy-haze (ICQ, MSN, etc) and link-local / Bonjour support without using the rtcomm beta. I do have the Collabora repo...
But I will have to start with a freshly flashed tablet and walk through the steps to see what I did, so I can tell you. |
Re: OS2008 Instant Messaging Upgrades
I'd love to see more notification methods, including the ability for loud alerts for pending messages, as opposed to the current quiet blip. I'm open to any hacks in the mean time.

These should now be sufficiently loud in proportion to my usual sound levels. I think I may replace some of my default Ubuntu sounds with those from the N810. I do like the classic Nokia start-up ui-wake_up_tune.wav. :) Thanks again sjgadsby! |
Re: OS2008 Instant Messaging Upgrades
do we know when additional features will make it into the regular OS via SSU? the instant messaging appl. is one of the features I use most on my tablet, and it would be so great if it could 'officially' do all the things it can already.
|
Re: OS2008 Instant Messaging Upgrades
there seriously needs to be a new telepathy-haze, as the current one depends on a version of libpurple thats seriously out of date...

Re: OS2008 Instant Messaging Upgrades
Hey, I was hoping someone was able to help me with my problem with getting MSN & AIM to connect after installing RTCOMM.
After a long hassle of installing RTCOMM sucessfully, I proceeded to input the account settings of both my msn and aim account. For some reason however, whenever I try to enable it, it keeps giving me an 'Network Error' sign... AIM I've gotten it to connect twice.. very briefly for it got disconnected almost right away as well. Is there something i'm missing?? all the passwords and screennames are correct, and google talk is working flawlessly still. Any input would be much appreciated :) |
Re: OS2008 Instant Messaging Upgrades
You probably have Pidgin already installed and are trying to use it's version of libpurple with RTCOMM which will not work.
|
Re: OS2008 Instant Messaging Upgrades
Please see this post by qwerty12 in another thread. It appears that the RTComm Beta has a Diablo-friendly version that is not linked from their web page. You need to install version 0.7, not 0.5, the one the web page says to download.
|
Re: OS2008 Instant Messaging Upgrades
thanks for help~
zerojay: so what you mean is I'd have to uninstall all of pidgin in order for RTCOMM to function? or just uninstall libpurple? where would I get the necessary libpurple for RTCOMM then? qole: i installed verision 0.7 and uninstalled the other version but still doesn't work :\ thanks :) |
Re: OS2008 Instant Messaging Upgrades
Oh great. I've been following this, installed the update as above, cannot connect to MSN still. But my Telepathy is stuck at 0.1-1 - the 0.2 update won't update for me at all... incompatible.

MSN & Yahoo! without RTCom Beta
After my first (and I hope last!) reboot cycle a few months back, I've been trying to play it extra safe with system wide packages, avoided the RTCom beta, and resisted toying with apt-get.
I gave Pidgin a shot but was really missing the way RTCom integrated with the rest of the N810. Whilst Pidgin was still installed, and my repository list as prior the reflash (including RTCom and Collabora) I seemed to be able to to restore IM connectivity for MSN, Yahoo, along with Google Talk and SIP and of course XMPP / Jabber. I did also have ICQ working pre-flash (with RTCom Beta package) by replacing the libpurple file, kindly provided earlier in this thread, but attempts since have failed. I have since uninstalled Pidgin. Anyhow, these are relevant apps I currently have installed:
Interestingly, RTCom is currently showing as "Not installable" missing packages "telepathy-haze (>=0.2.0-1collabora1). My current repository list: Code:
Nokia-N810-23-14:~# cat /etc/apt/sources.list.d/hildon-application-manager.list Let me know if you'd like to check any other files etc. |
Re: OS2008 Instant Messaging Upgrades
I installed the RTComm Beta 0.7 onto a new tablet, and I couldn't get MSN to connect (Network Error). I found that I had to downgrade my libpurple0 file (the Pidgin libraries). This required me to do the following (as root) to get MSN working again:
Code:
apt-get install libpurple0=2.4.3-1collabora1 |
Re: OS2008 Instant Messaging Upgrades
My messenger support has been working fine for ages, but just a few weeks ago it stopped working with "Network error".
It was about the same time the new Live Messenger Beta was released that had the ability to log in from multiple locations. Has there been some protocol change? |
