Nokia 770 Durability

I'm considering purchasing a Nokia 770 for use as a remote control for a handful of Squeezeboxen around my house. If it's a success, I may get a second one - one for each floor of the house.

I'm an admitted klutz. But, I also have two kids who are 1 year old (yes twins), will soon be walking and the coffee table will be right at their height. They already love our laptops and remotes and they'll certainly be attracted to the Nokia 770.

Any feedback on the durability of the 770? Will the screen break upon dropping it? How about the body? Is this the device for a family like ours?

So you wanna know how durable our beloved 770 is...well let me be the first to tell you that from MY experience, it is durable as hell!

1: I've fallen asleep with it in my hands only to wake up with the 770 wrapped around me (it was charging)...and the unit itself was under me...now I'm not exactly what you would call thin (270 lbs. to be exact.) and it went with out a scratch...

2: I once again fell asleep with it in my hands..(I'm beginning to see a pattern)...and woke up with it on the floor...which means that I some how managed to push it off my bed in my sleep...no problem.

3: I've taken the 770 apart...and let me be the one to tell you...I thought it was made of some really cheap ABS plastic...NOPE! this thing has some decent plastic for what it is. I was honestly amazed...I'm not easily impressed with a lot of things.

So there you have it. Take my opinion/input for what it's worth. Take care. I hope you enjoy having it as much as I do...if you decide to get it.

I'd say any direct hits to the screen, and the memory card door are the weakest points. Closest I've had to damage so far is it slipped out of my hand about waist high and it banged off my bed frame onto a carpet floor. Left a mark on the plastic, but who doesn't have a handheld e-gadget that doesn't have some wear on it.

It's pretty durable, but toddler proofing expensive objects has never been done in all of human history. And you have a tag team? Good luck!!

I had two accident with it and it survived quite well.

1. I had it in my side jacket pocket and it slipped out onto the concrete parking lot when I sat down in a car. It had a tiny scratch on the aluminum cover.

2. I was surfing in the bathroom and listening to some music, when I got up the earphone somehow got snagged and it yanked out of my hand. It banged on the toilet seat and landed on the vinyl floor (unlike my nokia 3650 that landed in the toilet...may it rest in peace). It shut down from the shock. I thought it was going to break. I turned it back on and it worked fine. No scratch or dent whatsoever.

Only part that seems weak at the moment is the connector panel.

The main shells are glass filled (gives it that slightly abrasive feel) and might be less tough than an abs body. But i guess if it was abs the walls would be alot thicker.

The Squeezebox is a networked (wired & wireless) audio player. Complete control of it seems to require use of the SlimServer web application. Seems like a good fit for the Nokia 770. Link:

There's a specific 770 skin included in the 6.5 version of Slimserver. It's not yet released, but can be downloaded as a beta.
