So I am guessing then that we have lost the capability of loading media to the unit from our PC?

Re: KDE/Koffice Install made easy for everyone
Wow, now I wanna get a large sd :( to try it out, amazing work penguinbait!
About sound, in my experiences, sound in hildon is done via esd. Does kde do anything with esd? Also, with the deb method, when you run it by applications, does it run on "top" of hildon and can you use bootmenu to boot it "seperatly", independent of hildon? |
Re: KDE/Koffice Install made easy for everyone
Quote:
KDE also uses same esd... KDE installs a icon in the extras menu (KDE) Pressing this will stop maemo/hildon and start KDE. You could hack and make KDE on boot, I chose not to include it in these last versions. |
Re: KDE/Koffice Install made easy for everyone
Hi penguinbait,
I do not know if my question is valid, but whenever I connect my N800 to my PC, it says that the card is busy. Do we forfeit this ability when we install KDE? Thanks for your help. |

Re: KDE/Koffice Install made easy for everyone
Hmm, trying to install it on my mmcboot so I have both KDE358v2.tar.bz2 and the SUP file at my / directory. But whenever I type in the command "tar zxvf KDE(rest of file name) it just says "tar invalid gzip magic".
I do have Gzipmagic installed, do I need to install tar as well from your site PenguinBait? |
Re: KDE/Koffice Install made easy for everyone
This is absolutely wonderful, penguinbait.
No really, this is great: I count the days without touching my ol' big computer... it's been a while! As we get to spend more time outside, with the warmer season, we realize how great it is to have a complete OS in our pocket. Now the problem I want to solve is... Word completion in Kword. I activated it. It shows in tooltip boxes the words I want to type. But no matter what keystroke I choose to activate these word suggestions, I get nothing, except, the key I stroke... (enter, space, right arrow, etc.). Understanding and solving this problem would really make a major difference, as most of us (as far as I can see) prefer using the stylus, as opposed to the BT keyboard. By the way, did anyone realize how quick one can be by making the onscreen keyboard as small as, say, 3/4 of an inch? If, on top of this, I get Word completion in Kword, I'll say goodbye to keyboards for good. But, really, thanks!! |

And yes, I do believe the sound in KDE is better - mainly because it's louder and the user can control both input and output volumes. |

Re: KDE/Koffice Install made easy for everyone
Hey folks,
First post here, but surely the first of many. I've been messing with this install all day, and Im embarrassed to say the first time it messed up was due to me not checking the file sizes. Oops. The second time it messed up, was because although the files were all copied and had the right sizes, the .bz2 file that I downloaded with my Windows computer wasnt named properly. Oops, my bad #2. The issue, though, is once I got this far, I was stuck. I fixed the name, and tried to update. No dice. I tried to uninstall, no dice. Im a decent windows and linux user (Im admittedly no admin, although I do pretend to be one at work ;)) but I was stumped here. I searched around for information on the debian package manager, and tried to uninstall kde-mmc1 manually from the command line, using just -r and even trying to FORCE it. No dice, again. But, Im glad to say I tracked down the issue. There is a file called kde-mmc1.postrem in the "/var/lib/dpkg/info/" folder. Inside that file, there were approximately 1,470 "rm" statements, that basically told the package manager that these files needed to be removed in order for the remove to be completed. So, I deleted all of the rm statements. I use vi, so I was able to remove 1460 of them with one quick command, but the very last one i just changed to an echo statement so I didnt have an empty command set. I did this and saved the file. I then tried to remove through the application manager. No dice. I then tried to do it using "dpkg -r kde-mmc1". Again, no dice. But, one final time I tried "dpkg -r --force-remove-reinstreq kde-mmc1" and it removed. Finally. Now that I was able to get the "bad" package out, I once again use application manager to install the kde-mmc1 package. And its installing as we speak. Its been installing for about 10 mins now (the first time it failed, it only ran for like 5 seconds before failing). So, to sum up, I: 1) Removed all of the "rm" lines from the "/var/lib/dpkg/info/kde-mmc1.postrem file. These were making the --force remove fail. 2) Ran dpkg from the command line using --force to remove it, as such: "dkpg -r --force-remove-reinstreq kde-mmc1" Im sorry if this has already been posted, I only read through about 25 pages of this thread before searching out my own solution. 15 mins in and still installing. Thanking you in advance, PB, as Im really looking forward to having KDE on my tablet. |

Re: KDE/Koffice Install made easy for everyone
I've read through the first 14 pages of this thread & did a search, but haven't seen this problem yet.
I'm a newbie with trouble installing KDE. (N800, OS2008, 4 GB card in mmc2, virtually empty, I think - don't know how to verify) Downloaded the mmc2 set of files to my PC, verified file sizes. Ported the install files to mmc2 via cable. Step #1 (local-mmc2.deb), no problem. Step #2 (kde-3.5.8-mmc1.deb), after some minutes, error = "not enough memory in target location". Now other software still runs, but trying to save a note file gives same error. What should my next step be? PS. What does "reflash your tablet" mean & how do you do it, & how do you know when it is necessary? Can you point me to a link that does a how-to? (see I told you I was a newbie!:D) |

Re: KDE/Koffice Install made easy for everyone
Just wanted to post a quick reply saying thanks, and that kdesup-3.5.8.deb will not install if nmap has previously been installed.
Removal of this package, and then updating kdesup will fix this issue. |

Re: KDE/Koffice Install made easy for everyone
I want to thank you, penguinbait for all your work on this project. I installed KDE about a week ago, but had to uninstall it because of the change in MicroB's font. I know it really isn't that big of a deal to most people, but for me, my intent of installing KDE was not to replace Maemo but have something to play around with. I wouldn't mind having a 1.5 GB chunk of space on my SD card in use and that's it [meaning, having KDE installed only means giving up a little space, and no negatives], but it really made MicroB almost unusable. This font seems to be what is defaulted in Konqueror, and although it can be changed in Control Center for Konqueror, I don't think the same can be said for MicroB. Just from a never-used-Linux-before, but hopefully logical standpoint, maybe a solution would be to have Nokia Sans font defaulted. I don't know if this is even possible, I probably have oversimplified an otherwise extremely complicated thing...
Once again, I'm not trying to be over-critical, and really do appreciate all the work you've done. |

Are you booting from SD? If you are booting from SD, then you did not install via the tree deb process? If you installed boot from SD and need the space. rm -rf /usr/local/kde will remove KDE for the most part I am just not clear what your position is? |

I am booting n810 from SD with the updeted boot menu for the newest os 2008 . on a 4 gb card I did not use the install-tools deb i set that part up my self " bootmenu / partion and stuff.." All i used was one deb the KDE 4 installer . Just like to remove it to give my space back. rm -rf /usr/local/kde worked gave me back some space Thanks computerfreek |

Description: This will remove KDE v4 This process will leave behind files and is not clean If you really want to completely remove the files left behind you should reclone your OS. I cannot completely remove everything So some files will be left, but the majority of the space will be regained That is the description from the deb. I am sorry but thats the best I can do. I tested it one time. I was still able to boot afterward. :) I cannot promise this wont break anything? Just install it and then uninstall it |

Re: KDE/Koffice Install made easy for everyone
I decided to give this a try, but when I try to install local-mmc2 I get an "Unable to Install message."
I have the MMC2 files on a 2GB External card and the Internal Card is also a 2 GB. I am running Diablo on an N800 Anyone have any ideas? Thanks, Bill Nevee Never mind, I decided no to try this. |
Retry
OK, I got bored and decided to try this again on my N800. I made two more attempts and, of course, both failed. Once for not enough memory and the second time for several pages worth of messages in the App Manager log. Perhaps I'm just not smart enough to understand the installation instructions. If I want to install to MMC1 do I download and run the MMC1 files on MMC1 or MMC2? I tried reading this forum, but 40 pages worth was just a bit much.
I'm going to reflash again as soon as the battery is charged. The N800 is just a toy (my Asus Eee is my main carry-around machine), so if I @#$%^ it up, no biggie. Thanks, Bill |

Re: KDE/Koffice Install made easy for everyone
I decided to give this one more shot. Of course, it failed. I tried installing Install Tools and I received a "Can not Install" message. I tried to send you a Private Message, but the log was over 7,000 characters, too long to include. So, the N800 goes in the drawer.
