At any rate, I installed it perfectly last night and will play with it today. My eyes aint what they used to be so I need to make everything a bit larger on the screen (tips?). One thing I learned -- and needs to be re-stated again -- is the TAR file MUST be downloaded by the 810 and not a computer. Even after I changed the name back after windows altered it, it still didn't work forcing me to reflash and download it again by the 810. If you simply download all the files with the 810 I think the install should go off without a hitch. Thanks again all.

To adjust font size in KDE: Open KMenu -> Control Center -> Appearance ->Fonts -> Set the fonts to what you want.

I personally use Nokia Smiley size 13 for General, Menu, and Window title then Nokia Sans size 11 for everything else (except Fixed Width). This seems to work well for easy readability without affecting functionality.

Note** You'll need to change the fonts in Konquerer separately if you want. To do that open Konqueror ->Menu ->Settings-> Configure Konqueror-> Scroll down to Fonts and set them here.

I use Nokia Sans 13 & 14. If you go larger than 13/14 you'll start getting some wonky views of webpages.

Re: KDE/Koffice Install made easy for everyone

Hi. For some reason I can't get past the first step. I download all the necessary files, attempt to run local-mmc1.deb and it fails almost immediately. If I run local-mmc2 it works normally until the internal memory fills up and runs out of space. Here is the log after it fails:
Code:

hildon-application-manager 2.0.2
/usr/bin/dpkg-deb -f '/media/mmc1/local-mmc1.deb'
/usr/bin/dpkg --install '/media/mmc1/local-mmc1.deb'
(Reading database ... 19223 files and directories currently installed.)
Unpacking local-mmc1 (from /media/mmc1/local-mmc1.deb) ...
dpkg: error processing /media/mmc1/local-mmc1.deb (--install):
 trying to overwrite `/etc/e2.tgz', which is also in package local-mmc2
dpkg-deb: subprocess paste killed by signal (Broken pipe)
Errors were encountered while processing:
 /media/mmc1/local-mmc1.deb

Any suggestions or help as to whyn this may be failing? Thanks. :)

penguinbait:

let me say you did a masterful job with the KDE effort. Having said that, its functionality seems limited by the fact that KDE doesn't know it is running on an IT rather than a computer. Screens that don't fit, lack of a right click stylus input are just a few of the items that make it a fun and appealing program, but not one ready for everyday use or users. So my question is simple: is it possible and will it ever happen that KDE (or another like Fedora) will ever be tweaked to run specifically as an IT program or is the future always going to be one of work arounds and glitches to adjust it life on an IT?

obviously, this is meant as an observation of KDE and not your fine efforts to bring it to the IT.

WFT,

Just give it time and some effort and you can make it functional. I know at first it can seem like a difficult task to use it. Just make sure you read many of the helpful KDE posts or do effective searches on the subjects you need help with and you can get it going. I think with the N810 and it's built in keyboard you have a great opportunity to do so. Especially look for posts written by PinCushionQueen because she has written several helpful posts on how to set up keyboard shortcuts. I struggled for quite a while to be able to move the dialogue boxes up high enough that needed input at the bottom of the page. But once I had the knowledge of how to do it, I am now able to do that just fine on my less capable N800. And, of course, with the n810 you don't have the virtual keyboard getting in the way like it sometimes does on the N800. Here's another thing that can help you right now. Maybe you've already seen and read it, but go check out my thread about using VNC with this. For now, while this seems so small to you, you can have it full size on your regular PC and then have almost normal input functions like right-click. VNC is surprisingly easy to get going. There are KDE tutorials on the web as you may have found by now. They can be very helpful. And lastly, email works, but you will need to run the commands in xterm that PB wrote in the associated thread here about that. If you are not familiar with xterm, well, I ended up getting that task done with a lot of help from albright.
So, obviously I can't answer your question about a more native KDE, but I can say that this kDE can be quite useful,, but will take some extra work to get it going.

I must say that completely agree with Sungrove! :) With a bit of effort KDE can be made ready for everyday use (especially on the N810). I personally haven't used Maemo at all in over a month. I use KDE exclusively as my desktop environment. I did have to grab a few scripts and set up some keyboard shortcuts and hotkeys but it's all been well worth the effort. I still use some Maemo apps but they are all launched from KDE. I even use KPackage instead of the Maemo Application Manager - it's waay superior, kinda like running apt-get from the command line but with a better GUI.

It funny, I read the forums and see people complaining about lack of document support, lack of PIM support, lack of offline browing, poor chat software, lack customization, lack of easy button mapping - every single time I want to say "KDE will give you what you want" (I used to actually post this but people seemed disinterested so I gave up).

Any "workarounds" (eg: using a script mapped to a button for right click or moving windows) that I may have to employ are NOTHING compared to what I gain by using KDE.

As Sungrove pointed out there are quite a few posts on suggestions for optimizing KDE. Also Penquinbait has made a v2 that is being tested by dual boot users right now that has quite a few improvements (.deb installers will need to wait a bit longer).

All this said - I totally understand not wanting to mess around with tweaking KDE to your liking, but want to encourage you to give it a try before you write it off and not good for everyday use. :)

IMHO, the kde environment is incomparably better
than the hildon environment

But ... kde is painfully slow (on my tablet korganizer
takes like a minute to start), resource hungry (I have
to switch to hildon to watch some movies which don't
run smoothly enough in KDE [most movies work fine
in kde however]) and takes up a huge amount of
card space.

Hmmm... KOrganizer only takes 35 seconds to load on my N810. Are you dual booting or did you install from .deb? I'm dual booting, I wonder if that's what is speeding things up?

FWIW, Konqueror will load in ~10 seconds; KWord only takes 17 seconds; KPDF load in 7secs with an addition 10 sec to load an 8MB pdf (and lets not forget that KPDF actually remembers your place in the document - which should gain it 10 seconds just for me not having to hunt down where I left off).

I don't dispute that a few of my divx movies need to be run from mplayer in Maemo (running from mplayer in KDE is still too slow) but that's one small inconvenience (for me at least).

No you need 1 card, with at least 2GB free space.

You can install to mmc1 OR mmc2 NOT BOTH

I was wondering.... would it be possible to assign one of the buttons to the RC right click program we have in the Hildon section of Kmenu ,I use a link to this from my desktop when I want a right click function at the moment...

any suggestions?
(sorry if this has been suggested before)

This sounds like a great opportunity to make a how-to (in the wiki perhaps?) and collect all of the scripts, shortcuts, hotkeys, and workarounds in one place. I think there are a bunch of people out there who would be very grateful to have a single "KDE post-install how-to" on setting up KDE to work well on the N800 and the N810.

:confused: penguinbait, this is something I'd like to see in the FAQ:
I confess that I haven't done all my searching homework; that said, it isn't clear from this thread's big initial post whether the deb install is run as an application from the Hildon desktop. Once the debs are installed, do you just choose the "KDE" menu choice and your hildon desktop is replaced by KDE? And then when you're done, you go to the KDE menu and choose "log out" / "shut down" or something, and your Hildon desktop comes back? Or do you have to reboot and choose KDE from a boot menu? Thanks!

yes

yes

as for wiki, have at it, once your up :)

sorry, chirp chirp

I think there are a bunch of people out there who would be very grateful to have a single "KDE post-install how-to"

The main
reason that has not happened, is because there will be another version, in which I will clear some things up, with more safeguards on the install.

The main problem, is well you know life, jobs, family, getting my wisdom teeth pulled, flipping my car, having to find a new one. life happens... If you read the first post, I clearly state this is a hack, and things can go wrong. I rely on this community to help each other, as it has helped me plenty.

good luck!

Re: KDE/Koffice Install made easy for everyone

Problems with KDE installation.
This is my first posting, so please be kind.
After downloading kde .deb files and the .tar.bz2 file I quickly (too quickly) started to installing from mmc1. Everything went smoothly, then I started KDE from the EXTRAS and didnot get past the opening blue screen. Then I spent hours searching the forum for answers, and yes, my KDE358.tar.bz2 file was too small. 250MB instead of 294MB.
Since then I managed to download the complete version and I tried install again. Did get a message, do you want to update, when I was trying to install and it quit. Then I tried uninstalling, to start all over again. Only one left is KDE-mmc1, cannot uninstall. When I try to get my mmc1 card out to load all the files again or when I connect to PC with cable, get message: unable to connect, memory card in use. Also: memory card in use, removing card may damage data etc. No program seems to be running on the n800.
Guess I will really need some help from a kind forum member. Good thing, all other applications on n800 are so far working.
Please help, Stan

OK, so much info, where to begin?

If you are trying to uninstall KDE and it is failing.

Go to application manager and uninstall it

When it fails,

In application manager, open the menu, Tools > Log

Paste the Log up here so we can see why its failing.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
As for the mmc card, once KDE in installed, it puts 2 files on your mmc card, local.img and swap.img. local.img is a mounted filesystem and swap.img is a swap file. When the N800/N810 is booted it mounts the local.img as /usr/local and enables swap. When this happens the mmc card is now in use and when using USB connection you can not mount that card because its in use.
To get around this to transfer some files, shut down n800, remove mmc card with KDE on it, boot up N800, then place in the mmc card back into the n800, then use USB.
In order to use KDE again, the mmc card MUST be in the n800 during system boot.
Re: KDE/Koffice Install made easy for everyone
hi penguinbait,
thanks for Your respons. Since my post I managed to corrupt my 8GB card, by removing it. My fault, no question.
Here is the log after trying to uninstall kde-mmc1:
Uninstalling kde-mmc1 3.5.8-PB2
dpkg: error processing kde-mmc1 (--remove):
Package is in a very bad inconsistent state - you should
reinstall it before attempting a removal.
Errors were encountered while processing:
kde-mmc1
this was after I corrupted my card by removing it. The problem is, I was trying to reinstall this file, but was asked if I want to update, which alwayz failed.
So now I have one corrupted card and no kde. Any idea how to fix the card?? My PC cannot see it at all.
I will not do anything else today, but will buy a new card soon. Should I download next time directly to the n800??
Sorry to bother You. This was the only problem since I got n800 two month ago, after installing many applications. Guess I was lucky.
Re: KDE/Koffice Install made easy for everyone
Hi Penguinbait,
just a quick one. My card allowed me to format it in n800 after 3 hours, so I started again. Transferred all four files to the blank card. Before inst. I checked installed aplications, and only found KDE-mmc1, which I cannot uninstall or delete.
Installed local-mmc1.deb. Next kde-3.5.8. tried to install, but was asked to update, which soon failed. Now there is a very long log file in application man. Don't know if anybody wants to look at it. Many new files were created on the mmc1 card. Since I cannot delete, could I format again??
Thanks, Stan
Thanks for Your reply, I have since last attempted installation reformatted my n800 and started using it as before, everything is working, but I have no KDE. The only file left is kde-mmc1 in Application manager, installed appl. which cannot be deleted, uninstalled or reinstalled (keeps asking for update and fails doing it. If I could remove it, I would try again the installation, have all four files on my PC.
Here is the very long log file.
NOTE: cannot send the log, it's longer then 10000 char. I will cut of the second half and try it again.
" The only file left is kde-mmc1 in Application manager, installed appl. which cannot be deleted, uninstalled or reinstalled (keeps asking for update and fails doing it. If I could remove it"
You are trying to uninstall, but the log is showing an installation.
Can you clear your log
try uninstall again
paste new log here
Copy and paste are your friends,
there is a space between find and /
find /var NOT find/var
Re: KDE/Koffice Install made easy for everyone
O.K. this time it ran differently: sorry I cannot copy and paste, n800 crashed, with black screen, when I connected it to PC. So here is what appeared in Xterm:
"rm: cannot remove '/var/lib/dpkg/info/kde-mmc1" this was common in all four lines, then comes:
.postinst': Permission denied
.list':Permission denied
.md5sums': Permission denied
.postrm':Permission denied
Application manager couldnot uninstall, logged basically the same message as in the past.
Maybe I should leave it alone for now and continue after I do reflash the OS, which I feel is coming soon.
Did you not use the sudo in the command. Its not running as root.
sudo find /var -name kde-mmc1* | xargs rm -rf
or
sudo gainroot
find /var -name kde-mmc1* | xargs rm -rf
stan800 2008-02-29 01:32
Re: KDE/Koffice Install made easy for everyone
After typing in sudo gainroot, got message"Enable RD mode if you want to break your device"
Do I need to install something to be able to "gainroot"???
You would need to install becomeroot, but what happens when you just use the line begining with sudo?
or run
sudo su - (instead of sudo gainroot)
then do the
find /var blah blah
???
stan800 2008-02-29 03:08
Re: KDE/Koffice Install made easy for everyone
sudo su - gives me ~# on the next line where I input find /var....., after hitting enter, no message shows up, just a ~# on the next line.
then I try Appl. manager to uninstall, it fails. By the way the kde-mmc1 file is only 1MB, it's the only file remaining from the installation.
stan800 2008-02-29 03:12
Re: KDE/Koffice Install made easy for everyone
how do I now get out of the # mode on the input line in XTERM???. Am I getting in some dangerous area, since I no nothing about linux commands?? But I am willing to learn.
Thanks, Stan
Re: KDE/Koffice Install made easy for everyone
Hi penguinbait, I also ran into the issue with filesizes being incorrect on the download, I solved it by using a download manager that didn't abort when your hosting dropped the connection. I'd be happy to host a mirror for the files so people don't have to fight with dropped connections and corrupted downloads. Shoot me a message and I can hook you up with details for my server.
Re: KDE/Koffice Install made easy for everyone
I am REALLY sorry to write this, but all my efforts to install KDE on my N800 were without any success. I am using a 2Gb Sandisk MMC.
I tried first with the MMC card boot, following this instructions:
http://thisweekinnuclear.com/KDEonN800.html
I was able to clone the OS to the card, and to boot from it, but when I was supposed just to click in the extra menu to start KDE, I had a blank screen without anything possible to do.
Ok. I restarted again. I said myself "let's try the easier way" ! I reflashed the N800 with the lastest firmware (maybe THIS is my error), read all this thread and install KDE on MMC without MMC boot. I downloaded the 4 files, checked the correct dimensions, and start install.
I didn't go too far.. When I tried to install the local-mmc1.deb file on my external MMC (or the local-mmc2.deb when I tried on the internal) it worked a bit and after it said "unable to install local-mmc1". I tried more than once, both internal and external MMC (of course with the proper files) but I didn't go beyond this step.
So I have just 2 ideas about my unsuccess:
1) The new firmware doesn't allow KDE installation
2) The 2Gb MMC is not big enough, even if freshly formatted.
What do you think? Should I reflash the tablet with the previous firmware ( :eek: -> reinstall all the apps!?) , buy an 4Gb MMC, or wait/give up?
Thanks to anybody who can help, all the best,
C.
When you say blank screen do you mean it went BLACK? When you first launch KDE from the Maemo menu there is a period of time where the screen goes black and you just need to wait for a bit then a small window should pop up showing that KDE is booting. How long did you wait on this "blank" screen and how did you get out of it?
Hi,
and thanks for the answer. Anyway I was meaning that I had the usual startup screen of my N800 but without ANYTHING to click/press.
From what I've read I was supposed to have KDE in my "extra" menu, but I couldn't do anything at all.
I waited some minutes, let's say 5, after that I had to take off battery and reboot (= turn on again) the N800.
This is why now I am really interested in installing KDE without MMC boot, you think it's not a good idea? Should I try again the MMC boot way? But it has to work, in both modes!
I am wondering if my 2Gb MMC is not enough (for KDE with .debs), even if it seems me the most stupid answer to my problem.
thanks again
C.
sounds to me like something went wrong with the Booting from MMC/Cloning process. KDE install shouldn't affect your ability to do anything in Maemo, at least for the dual boot installation. If you decide to go the dual boot route again, make sure that you check to see if your clone is even booting up before you move forward to the KDE tarball part of things. In my experience, the majority of KDE installation problems have been either with the booting MMC/Cloning process or incomplete file downloads more than with the actual KDE install.
I don't know much about the .deb install process of KDE so can't really help there. Sorry. I personally am a dual booter - I use KDE as my desktop environment (haven't used Maemo in months) so any and every little bit of efficiency improvement I can get is good. Technically booting from MMC should provide a more efficient operation of KDE.
Re: KDE/Koffice Install made easy for everyone
Hi again,
and thanks again. Unfortunately I didn't explain me very well...
I had a good MMC booting setup: I mean, I was able to launch maemo both from internal flash and from MMC.
The problems came when I tried to install KDE: after that, starting from MMC I wasn't able to do nothing at all!
This is why I reflashed my N800, reinstalled everything and tried the .deb way.
As wrote before, the only idea I have is or that the new OS is not compatible with KDE, or that my 2Gb MMC is somehow too small for the .deb tarballs.
Anyway, thanks again. All the best
C.
Thanks for Your help. I will continue with KDE install after a re flash, at the moment everything is running fine, so I will wait a bit.
