Re: KDE/Koffice Install made easy for everyone
Just wanted to report another happy customer. This is a great way to add a ton of useful applications without messing around with dual-boot/sd-boot non-sense.
Can't wait for the next release :D |
Re: KDE/Koffice Install made easy for everyone
I hacked around this weekend and got the beginnings of a new input method put together:
http://kitsu.petesdomain.com/files/m...exinput-01.png It is loosely based on the hexinput method described here. It has configuration loading stubbed out already, the interface mostly works, and it can send output to the outside world (although only by printing to the console right now). I still have a lot of work to do - I have to make some bitmaps for the buttons that aren't simple letters, I need to develop a mechanism for non-letteral keys to use when activated (like the fx keys, arrows, etc.), and I need to tie it into KDE. It doesn't actually do anything yet unfortunately, but you can play around with it: hexinput.py I suggest trying it on a desktop computer though as it is still dead slow on my N800 and has some annoying bugs  Edit: Watch out for the ugly font rendering too. I'm using colorkey transparency on the fonts because they weren't blitting transparently, but on Maemo Pygame can only render fonts antialiased. I was using hot-pink as my transparent color, but with antialiased fonts all the letters had pink halos. So now I am using (15,0,15) as my transparent color, but the antialiased font still comes with a halo, only now it is a black bubble... Guess I need to use white then ;) |

Re: KDE/Koffice Install made easy for everyone
I have tried to install KDE on my n810 for a few days and everytime a new problem prevents me from doing so. I have now been stuck on installing kde-3.5.8-mmc2.deb for a few hours now. The internal memory only has the other debs and the KDE358.tar.bz2 files on it and yet when I try to install the second deb it says that there is not enough memory. I checked the file sizes to confirm that they were the right files and it says it is 300kb not 301kb. Is this the problem or is it something else? By the way I am downloading the files on my pc and transferring it on to the memory card which is 2gb. Please help because this kde and koffice seems perfect for me. Thanks in advance for any responses.

Thanks penguinbait!! I'm only sorry I waited so long to make the attempt!! |
Re: KDE/Koffice Install made easy for everyone
UGH this is so frustrating.
installing kde-mmc1 - first it says it installed, now it says it's installed but not working and I can't UNINSTALL it! anyone have any suggestions? |
Re: KDE/Koffice Install made easy for everyone
So when is version 2 of easy intall KDE planned to be available?
|
Re: KDE/Koffice Install made easy for everyone
Does KDE run faster installed from a .deb or on a cloned OS with boot options
|
Re: KDE/Koffice Install made easy for everyone
Thanks penguinbait
I have installed KDE in mmc1 using English as language default, that's the key to success!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Usuarios en español usen ingles como idioma y luego de instalar KDE cambien a español, éxitos!!!!!!!!!! :D |
Re: KDE/Koffice Install made easy for everyone

Y como se puede cambiar el idioma?! o sea, como puedes hacerlo despues de el primer arranque? |
Re: KDE/Koffice Install made easy for everyone
Nevermind, figured it out... Control panel then language
Trying now, after having screwed up all the previous installations :( I made a backup first of all :) |
Re: KDE/Koffice Install made easy for everyone
I tried install this to N810 on external mini-SD card. I downloaded and used
local-mmc2.deb kde-3.5.8-mmc2.deb, kdesup-3.5.8.deb and KDE358.tar.bz2 All files I put to external SDM6 4GB card. Suddenly files .img both appeared not on external card but on internal instead. This is not a result I need. Installation were broken at begining of kdesup-3.5.8. And internal card were locked - I cannot access it from PC. Did anyone install this to N810 to external card? How did you do that? If I just will move .img files to external card - what I have to edit to allow properly start KDE? |
Re: KDE/Koffice Install made easy for everyone
damn... I did not even think external card is mmc1 but internal is mmc2...

I have reflashed for 4 times using Spanish as language default, in the last I have used English and It was OK, I always used the same files. |
Re: KDE/Koffice Install made easy for everyone
Will kde consume much more power than without it? E.g. now I use about 40% of power per day (so i 'll recharge it every day).
PS: n800, os 2008 |
Re: KDE/Koffice Install made easy for everyone
Quote:
However, I can easily imagine that slightly more power might be used if one were to go back and forth between Maemo and KDE repeatedly throughout the day - just because of the CPU usage while opening and shutting down KDE. I personally don't use Maemo desktop at all (I only use KDE). |
Re: KDE/Koffice Install made easy for everyone
Really nice, although I immediately set the fonts to nokia fonts and colors to default plastic colors. After that, the UI started to feel pretty nice. Biggest problem I faced was how to get right button easily and being able to scroll down on dialogs that were too high for the 480 screen. Other than that, really good work. Kudos!

Re: KDE/Koffice Install made easy for everyone
Oh, and have you all noticed that once you have installed kde, you can also run the apps in maemo itself by opening the app from xterm in maemo (say... konqueror)
|
Re: KDE/Koffice Install made easy for everyone
Quote:
Also FYI - the converse is true you can run just about any Maemo app within KDE the same way. Although running the Maemo apps in KDE is superior IMHO because in KDE I can easily make Menu entries and/or Desktop shortcuts and/or hotkeys (aka: Input Actions) for the Maemo apps so that I don't need to actually open xterm to launch them. |
Re: KDE/Koffice Install made easy for everyone
While trying to install local-mmc2.deb application manager said unable to install so i ran dpkg -i local-mmc2.deb in xterm as root and got this error
Code:

Re: KDE/Koffice Install made easy for everyone
Hi guys. I want to put KDE on my new N800, but I can not seem to figure out what is going on.
I've got (1) Sandisk 2GB SD card. Yet I see that install requires the 300mb file to be on the unit's internal memory. It only comes with a 128MB card. Will I need to purchase another card in order to install the OS? Thanks for the help :) |
Re: KDE/Koffice Install made easy for everyone
I have a quick question that I wasn't able to find a clear answer for in this thread. I have a N800 and I am going to install KDE to the internal SD card (MMC2). I'll be installing from a 2GB SD card in the external slot (MMC1). Are the file named for the source or destination? In other words - do I want the MMC1 or MMC2 files if I am installing from MMC1 onto MMC2? I apologize if I'm asking a repeat question. I read the entire thread and did not find a clear answer.
Thanks! |
Re: KDE/Koffice Install made easy for everyone
use the number that you are installing TO
mmc1 to mmc2 use 2 mmc2 to mmc1 use 1 |

Re: KDE/Koffice Install made easy for everyone
Thanks a ton Delphi.
edit: In the end, I was able to install it, and I indeed was very impressed with it, but it did not seem to offer the functionality I was looking for. I am reflashing with OS2008 right now. |
Re: KDE/Koffice Install made easy for everyone
If I'm installing it onto my mmc boot I just copy the two .tar.gz files to the root directory and just untar them right?
|
Re: KDE/Koffice Install made easy for everyone
I gotta say, I am surprised at the people having trouble installing this. I am a total n00b and know very little about Linux, other than installing it on my Playstation 3 which is Yellow Dog. If you follow the instructions, to the letter, it works. Worked for me anyhow.
Do not do anything other than what is described. You do not have to untar or unzip anything. FOLLOW THE INSTRUCTIONS. Nothing else is required. I suspect people are thinking there must be more to this install. There isn't. The fist post in this chain is all that is required. I used MMC2 (internal) didn't reflash OS first or anything like that, only had 50Mb of N800 memory available, but followed the instructions to the letter, downloaded files to PC and transfered over to N800 on a USB, installed in the order directed and boom. KDE worked straight away. I don't even have any font issues. Penguinbait, you are a God in my book. Thanks for taking the obvious trouble to get this working on the N800. It is truly brilliant. Enough thanks cannot be bestowed upon you. If you are thinking about it and reading this thread, just do it. You will not be disappointed. So much more functionality. I haven't even scratched the surface of what is available. As said before, Laptop functionality in your palm. Nearly anyway! |
Re: KDE/Koffice Install made easy for everyone
Groover, do you know a way to get the full RealPlayer/any other 'real computer' player on here?
Thanks. |
Re: KDE/Koffice Install made easy for everyone
Two more questions for clarity's sake:
The instructions state that FAT/FAT32 formatting is necessary for the SD card. Does this refer to the card I am installing from or the card that I am installing to (or both)? In other words - does the SD card that will hold the resulting local.img and swap.img have to be formatted FAT/FAT32? I assume that virtual memory should be turned off for the install. From what I've read here the swap.img functions as virtual memory for Maemo when complete. Are these assumptions correct? Thanks! |
Re: KDE/Koffice Install made easy for everyone
Deaj - yes, the card that will hold those two files must be in FAT/FAT32.
|

Are my assumptions regarding the virtual memory / swap.img correct? |
Re: KDE/Koffice Install made easy for everyone
Well, considering that Maemo's virtual memory is on a different card than KDE's, I would imagine that it would work regardless. I have my virtual memory on and my install was fine.
Not 100% sure though, I am just starting out with this stuff :) |

Re: KDE/Koffice Install made easy for everyone
I thought I'd post a quick follow-up *from Konqueror* to say thank you to Penguinbait! Amazing work PB!
Now back to exploring. :) |
Re: KDE/Koffice Install made easy for everyone
So, I reinstalled it - it's tantalizing, in truth :)
Some things though: 1. I notice I can not connect the device to my computer now, it tells me that the SD card is busy. Any fixes for this? 2. KPackage asks for a root password, despite having obtained root from terminal by using becomeroot. What can we do to rectify this? 3. Trash does not work. What's the deal? Thanks for the help guys. |
Re: KDE/Koffice Install made easy for everyone
Both KDE and Hildon seem to be ideally suited to different purposes. KDE is by far better suited for productivity while Hildon seems well suited for entertainment. I love the extraordinary functionality added to the N800 with KDE and its application suite! Once my iGo Stowaway bluetooth keyboard arrives I will likely be leaving my laptop on the desk top.
BTW: The font fix posted by Penguinbait in another thread did the trick (quoted below for reference). Thanks again PB!! Quote:

Re: KDE/Koffice Install made easy for everyone
I found a way to fix fonts easily (atleast for me):
I just changed KDE's default fonts to Nokia Sans, and I did a reboot. I still had MicroB's stock fonts. Not sure if it will work for all... |

Re: KDE/Koffice Install made easy for everyone
OK, probably a stupid question, but I couldn't find an answer by searching. When I first installed KDE, launched it and everything worked great. When I logged out and went back to the stock UI, everything worked great. However, upon rebooting the N810 and launching KDE, I no longer have sound in KDE. When I log back out to the stock UI, I have no sound either. When I reboot the device, my sound is restored, but when I launch KDE, it's gone again. Any suggestions? Also, I can't seem to play videos in KDE, but I have only tried with the N810 avi that is on the device.
