FBReader version 8.10. good and bad

I recently upgraded to the newest version of FBreader and noticed that it now automatically adds MOBI ebooks to the library. YAY!! This is something for which I have been waiting a long time.

Now the bad news. :(

I have over 400 ebooks and when I tried to add any of them to the library or view my library, the program processed for a while and then crashed after using all the available memory (about 90 MB). The solution is to create a new folder with only a few books in it, then change the config to point to the new folder.

It works but is not the nicest method.

It does seem to work well with the reduced amount of ebooks.

I see that FBreader allows you to add the Mobipocket books to the library but is there a way for it to decrypt purchased ones? That would be great news indeed.

However, I tried it on one of the books I previously purchased and it still is not readable.

Thanks,
Fred

I just add them by hand as I read them. The library isn't set up particularly well for browsing big collections, and I wont be needing more than one or two of them at a time, anyway.

Re: FBReader version 8.10. good and bad

The problem was that the new version automatically added all the books in the folder when you tried to open the library or add a new book. It works fine now that I have a smaller folder, but when I had it pointing to my main ebooks folder it crashed (after a couple of minutes of trying to add all the books).

I am just not sure why it uses so much memory. It seems to be reading each book into memory and not releasing them.

The feature can be disabled in settings.

I'm not finding that in settings.
You can tell it not to read subdirectories...

Yes. A bookseller that doesn't DRM its wares.

If they're encrypted commercial books, then they wont work. You have to convert them somehow.

I get quite a few ebooks from Baen ( https://www.webscription.net/default.aspx )

They get the whole DRM issue and that is why I buy a LOT from them.

Mostly decent sci-fi and such... Also have a rather decent free library.

In addition to the already mentioned:

http://manybooks.net/ (lots of free ebooks)

http://www.ebookmall.com/ (many without any DRM, check the notes and never choose the Palm format)

Karel,

On ebookmall do you use the mobipocket format?

I have sofar restricted myself to PDF, HTML, text and/or Microsoft Word. I was planning on experimenting with Microsoft *.LIT format, to see if they can be decrypted with AmberLIT, but I have yet to find a sufficiently interesting bargain (I'm a cheapskate) to experiment with.

From what I've read, Mobipocket ebooks are reasonably easy to copy to other devices.

Hi,

I like this project but lack of PDF support. Somebody knows when PDF will be full supported with graphics.

Taguapire.

Re: FBReader version 8.10. good and bad

I upgraded to 8.11. The ebook I was reading (in .pdb format) lost it's page ,which I kinda knew was going to happen. Not really a big problem, just go back to the correct page.

The problem, though, is that the page counter (lower right next to time) isn't working anymore. It counts to five and goes back to 1.
Also, there's no more formating, no more indents, no more carriage returns, no more paragraphs.

Anybody got the same issue?

I upgraded to 8.11 without problem. And my current book reopened to the same page.

It might be that all these issues (including forgetting the page) are solved in 0.8.12. There were some fixes specifically related to page numbering.

If you have a Windows Desktop, I suggest trying importing the PDF into Windows MobiPocket Reader. It will convert PDF to MOBI for you. The result is not always good - it depends on the PDF. If you need a Linux solution, try pdftohtml or pdftotext (both based on xpdf).

Re: FBReader version 8.10. good and bad

Personally, I download any DRMed ebooks I buy (when I'm forced to use DRM) in Microsoft Reader format, and then use convertlit to decrypt them for reading into FBreader, and this has always worked almost perfectly for me, except for one book so far - Stephen Colbert's I Am America.... for some reason it doesn't create the html properly and so the hyperlinks to the pictures and footnotes are just all wrong.
