Transfer files from Windows PC to Nokia via WLAN

I have an Nokia N800 with OS2008. I wonder if there is an easy way to transfer files from my Windows Vista PC to my Nokia N800 via WLAN?

I read something about Samba in OS2008, but I don't really know what to do..

Is there an easy way to make this kind of connection?

thanks!

Re: Transfer files from Windows PC to Nokia via WLAN

On the windows pc I use winscp and on my n800 i install openssh.

http://winscp.net/eng/index.php
http://www.gronmayer.com/it/index.php

winscp is a two paned explorer type interface for the PC which allows me to securely ftp (via ip address) to the Nokia N800 and transfer files in either direction over wi-fi securely. (sync files etc)

tip. only install main openssh program on N800 where you will be asked to change password for root if you have not already done so. openshh for NIT's can be found in the maemo extras repository, if you do not have repo already installed in application manager

Re: Transfer files from Windows PC to Nokia via WLAN

OpenSSH+WinSCP is my method of choice, however, there is another option which does not require any software installs on the windows box: rdesktop will map the local drives of a client as network accessible drives on the Windows host.

Remeber, this is only true as long as the rdp session is running, so do not close rdesktop once you have initiated the file transfer. I often use this method as a compliment to scp.

Samba is an option too, but the above two methods should cover your needs and are far less cludgy.

Last time I checked the OS2008 File Manager automatically detected my Windows style shares on my NSLU2. Try just setting up a shared folder on your Windows PC and see if you can see it from File Manager.

Re: Transfer files from Windows PC to Nokia via WLAN

If using Linux i.e. Ubuntu I am not sure what is the best or most elegant GUI equivalent (Functionally) for winscp, it would be great to be able to use the same open source GUI for use on NIT's, and/or Win, MAC or Linux PC's.

Filezilla perhaps? http://filezilla-project.org/client_screenshots.php

I appreciate that there are many ways to achieve this task in a Linux environment, where I would welcome Linux users experience and guidance on best methods for simplified file, transfer, synchronisation & backup via ideally one GUI application.

i.e what are your favourite Wi-Fi method(s) and why, in order to gauge and conclude whats fits best for overall needs on/with our NIT's

I am aware for example that rsync and more recently grsync (GUI for rysnc) are now available via OS2008 and app manager repositiries.

Could someone explain how to use these tools and how they differ and/or are similar to Filezilla and winscp?

Thanks. :o

Re: Transfer files from Windows PC to Nokia via WLAN

The beauty of winscp on a Windows PC is you can access all areas of the NIT's file structure from the PC and you can do it securely. This then enables you to copy files from the NIT to review on the PC and then pass updated copies back to the NIT. well at least that is my current limited usage understanding.

Working on the NIT's small screen can get very tiring over long periods so having the option to work wirelessly and directly with the NIT (via differing methods) from any PC on your network is a great advantage.

Ditto.... just make a shared file in Windows and your N800 will detect it... you'll see it in File Manager. You then can copy and paste any files in the folder to your N800.

If you are suing Ubuntu, and you want to browse the NIT via a GUI, just use the built-in Nautilus under Gnome Desktop. Its quite simple.
1. Install SSH server on your NIT, then
2. On the Ubuntu PC, setup a connection to the NIT via SSH by doing the following:
-Click on Places --> Connect to Server --> Browse Network
-Find the NIT in the network browser, double click it, enter your password, and away you go. Great for dragging and dropping, editting files on the NIT directly, etc.

Re: Transfer files from Windows PC to Nokia via WLAN

If you are using ssh/scp to access your tablet then it is worth creating a private/public key pair and then you don't need to enter a password.

Re: Transfer files from Windows PC to Nokia via WLAN

thanks for your help! ssh/scp works just fine!

what do I have to do to create this private/public key pair?

by the way...is there something like the windows "ipconfig" on the N800?

I didn't succeed with the shared file in windows, but maybe the problem is my ZoneAlarm firewall or all these Vista security "features"...actually I'm too lazy to find out..

Yes its "ifconfig" but my experience is you can only run this command as root, if you install the "becomeroot" package via application manager, its just a matter of typing "sudo gainroot" and then "ifconfig" to check ip assigned to NIT ;)

This is my experience when trying to share a Folder on PC for NIT, like you I am tired of checking windows and router settings/firewalls in order to get these types of things working. (Anyway its not as elegant a solution as winscp, for reasons I mentioned in earlier posts within this thread)

I've written up the procedure for putty, pscp and winscp on the wiki.

I'm unable to run or install Winscp or the FAR plugin in WinXP SP2, because I get an illegal instruction error on all versions back to 4.05. I have no idea why this would be.

I wonder if this suggestion is any help from winscp forum?

http://winscp.net/forum/viewtopic.ph...al+instruction

i.e. The file(s) you have been downloading are incomplete or corrupt in some way?

If I recall correctly, you shouldn't need to be root for this if you give explicit path to the command i.e. type /sbin/ifconfig

I am still slightly confused. How do I find the host name of my device? Or do I have to change the port number or something else?

To find the ip of the Nokia Internet Tablet NIT device, open Xterm under utilities and type /sbin/ifconfig then you can scroll back through the information provided to find the ip assigned to your device.

In winscp on the PC for example, you would use the NITs ip address and an Account & Password of your NIT to gain access to it via winscp.

I am currently using root but am aware I should ideally be using user account. (Other links in this and other threads explain how set ssh/everything up to login to the NIT as User)

Re: Transfer files from Windows PC to Nokia via WLAN

A dialogue window pops up saying that the server I am connecting to may not be who it says it is. Even though I say "yes" i trust the device, the authentication fails. I had changed the root password, but it isn't accepted. Any Ideas?

Aciv 2008-01-14 01:38

Re: Transfer files from Windows PC to Nokia via WLAN

When I try to login using winscp, the connection times out, even though the tablet is connected to the internet, and openssh is installed.

Edit: I got it fixed. I was running my wan input thru a switch and into my desktop and into my wireless router. That didn't work. After eliminating the switch it works fine for whatever reason.

Thanks for all the help.

So I put in the ip address of my tablet as the host name and the password I typed in is the root password of my device, however, I keep getting an error that authentication has failed. What am I doing wrong?

Alternatively, run connection manager (in the Settings group) and on the 'Internet connection' menu there's an option 'IP address' which will tell you what you need to know.

Filemanager had shown the windows shares, but now it doesn't do anymore. I'll try another method, but do not know, if it works.
On my N810 I installed openssh and gave a new root-passwd.
On windows I use Totalcommander (formerly WinCommander) and FTP to the IP I set for my N810, using the new password. It does not work.
What am I doing wrong?

I don't know anything about Totalcommander, but if you've just installed openssh on the tablet you need something which supports secure ftp e.g. WinSCP or Putty's psftp. A plain ftp program won't work through ssh.

and other disappointment for me. I can't believe that this device which is based on the "all mighty linux OS" can not connect to a simple windows smb share with username/password. You would think this would mbe the first program someone would have written.

File manager will pull up my upnp shares on my MCE, but it's not useable by any means, and the shares come and go without reason. I need a way to map a drive permanently within os2008

I'm having this problem too, except it was working for two days, then stopped. I was even playing and streaming music from it. I could see my shared directories/files and later my media library. Now I can't see either. Frustrating.

Re: Transfer files from Windows PC to Nokia via WLAN

There are several ways to transfer files from/to your PC to N8x0:

1. USB cable: just boot the N8x0 and connect the USB cable. The PC will see the DOS partitions on the SD(s).
2. Move what you want the N8x0 see on your PC into the shared folder.
Note that the PC and th N8x0 have to be on the same (wifi) LAN. After you boot the N8x0; it will see the PC shared folder. If it doesn't see the folder; just simply close the File Mgr and re-open it! I found it very reliable. At first I was frustrated why it kelp vanishing on me too.
3. Orb
4. ....

1. is the fastest way ! I use it to back up the OS image to PC.

I'm having this same problem.. I keep getting access denied on winscp.

and the alternative of supposedly seeing the shared folder from my pc in my IT file manager has never worked.

I have no idea where I'm going wrong with winscp so any help would really be appreciated

EDIT: I realised what I was doing wrong - the username should be Root not the IP address.

I know I shouldn't be saying this here.. but god Linux is confusing...

I'm new to "POSTING" but would like to share.
I installed a "Bluetooth Dongle" on my Vista Machine and share files between the NIT and Vista that was. It's easy and fast "not to mention cost effective.

I also share individual files between my laptop and my NIT via bluetooth. I don't think the bluetooth file sending protocol lets you send/retrieve multiple files at once though.

Re: Transfer files from Windows PC to Nokia via WLAN

I have recently got my N800 and I have installed OS2008 on it. Its working fine. I was trying to access my Laptop (windows XP Media center edition) shared files from N800, to do so I have opened File manager and found few other network machines/folder but not mine laptop. I have turned off my Norton Internet Security Firewall (windows firewall is already tured off by default, since its using Norton firewall), then tried it again but could not see my sahred files/folder from laptop. However I can see the same shared folders from other Laptop/Machine (windows XP) and even from my Archos 604wifi.

My laptop is listed in "workgroup" (not in domain), I have full privilges on my user ID on laptop.

Could somebody help me to get the network shared files from my laptop on N800. I don't know why its not listing my sahred folders in "file manager".

I also wanted to reverse, I mean if I could access my N800 from my Laptop, is it possible? I appreciate your help.

Thanks.
Arun.
