[Palm OS] hotsync-how do my n800 and PC talk?
Hey there,
I've been working all evening on getting up to speed on this palm syncing technology. I just wonder if someone could brief me on how the palm desktop and my Nokia N800 will comunicate? I'm not sure if it's by bluetooth or some other technology. My laptop doesn't appear to have bluetooth. So far I have the Garnet VM on my n800 and the Palm Desktop software version 4.1.4 running on a windows xp home edition which I read is supported by Palm. I have tried using both the computer's IP address and the name I set up for it in the hot sync dialogue box in Garnet. So what do I need now? Obviously Hotsync is not working for me. I'm guessing I need to buy a USB Bluetooth adapter, but I read an earlier post here where one of you thought the GVM didn't recognize bluetooth. So how do they talk? Thanks, Neil |
Re: hotsync-how do my n800 and PC talk?
You need to set the the hotsync on the pc to allow network hotsyncs for the user you want to sync with. Then enter the ip address of the pc in garnet vm. Doesn't always work just try again. I had never used network hotsync with a palm before so i don't know how well it compares to the real thing. If you have a palm that can do it handy you could try a network hotsync with it to see if that works. I suppose the other thing to check is firewall settings for the hotsync on the pc.

Network hotsync is the only way. I haven't tried to do a hotsync with GVM - in fact I removed it because it's just not worth the effort. It's a kludge at best. I'm using my Palm for PIM and other stuff, and the Nokia for internet use.

Re: hotsync-how do my n800 and PC talk?
I have now tried all the possible setting changes on both my PC and in Garnet and Sync keeps failing. I think part of the problem is the lack of settable options in the Hotsync dialogue box in GVM. One option might be to use a wireless router since both my N800 and lap top can connect to that although maybe this would set up a security problem for my lap top. Anyway, I found a good web page that covers a lot of these procedures here : http://www.palmzone.net/content.php?pid=20
That page explains both the ad hock direct link and the WIFI based link. BTW, I also tried just linking my N800 to mylap top in connection manager but that didn't work either. Neil |

make sure that after enabling the lan sync option, you also change windows firewall settings to include palm desktop as an exception. sounds basic but hey so am i

I am connecting via a wireless router well pc is connected by a network cable. The odd thing is the N800 dosent show up as an attached device but I can browse the net over the connection and can see shared files on the pc ( sometimes and it takes forever to find them - the directories are populated in slo-mo). I left my treo in my pocket and carried my n800 about today left it on and gvm minimised and used it regularly during day running a couple of skyscape references and it went fine- battery still showing 6 hours when I got home ( I did turn bluetooth/wifi off). Very pleased.

Has anyone been able to sync without going over a network router? Such as, syncing over Bluetooth or through a wired connection?
