Well, my main complaint previously was more with the overlapping issue, not that it was hard to move them. I like the new transparent overlappability, but without a lock setting, I think it's now slightly inferior.
My take, in order of importance: should be able to lock/unlock, should be able to overlap (transparency a nice bonus, but not needed), and it would be nice if edges were sticky, to easily align things.

I think the best solvation of this tricky problem is to make applets movable by tap'n'hold for 2 or 4 seconds. This will be not so complicated like in OS07 and not so easy to move like now.
P.S.: F*ck the applets, please fix the frustating touchscreen! »_«

Err -- no. We xxxxxed about the home screen having not enough possibilities for users to adapt it, things like free-scaling of windows, overlapping windows, putting your xxxxing own icons in there.

Apparently the poor, ******ed maemo guys read that as: "We must make all windows moveable. Durr." Next thing you're telling me is these spazzoids need a sign in the toilet to remind them to wipe their arses?

(And when I write "sign", I mean "picture", obviously)

No, the solution is an on/off option in the menu to (un)freeze the layout. Why look for complicated solutions when a simple one is available?

i think the problem right now is that there is no designated "grab" handle.

as in, you dont have some corner or similar that one need to grab to move it about.

like on the search applet where you can grab inside the entry area and move it about, thats just silly.

hold to move could work. from what i read, the latest iphone update allows people to move the buttons around, and there you hold until the button "wobble" and then start dragging...

Having been a 770 owner before recently getting an 810, believe me, I do appreciate the maemo guys, and your own many helpful contributions on the forum. I appreciate also the wry humour. I found the applet behaviour on the 770 non-ideal, but at least it didn't have a mind of its own - as stewalton notes, the RSS applet being large area is too easily inadvertently moved (but not the only one).

I'm not a linux geek however, just an early adopter - if I were I might have a go at fixing the applet thing - but surely it should be possible to put an additional option under the home / applet settings menu for 'lock/unlock' ?

Similarly, on the 770 I loved the fact that it let me see lots of RSS feeds at a glance, whereas now I'm limited to 4. As you note, different folk will have different preferences, but whenmaking changes, couldn't a user-definable option be included to recognise this ? (And, yes, I know it's a tradeoff - the opposite extreme being the kind of bloated code that comes from a certain well known monopolist sftware provider).

So, back to topic, does anyone know if the applet issue is being progessed or not ? Or will I just have to live with it ? Thanks

This thread just gave me an idea... Does anyone who has written an applet/otherwise has knowledge, know if an applet can move itself? If so, a given applet (an open-source one) could have a configuration setting added in which it jumps back to its home after being moved.

OTOH, someone would undoubtedly have taken advantage of it by now and made an applet which roams around the screen, or dodges when it thinks you're getting ready to hit it, or some other useful behaviour, so I guess it must not be possible.
