Fon and n800

After consulting this forum and reading reviews, I bought the n800 and thus far have been very impressed. This device has so much potential it's scary.
Anyway, I have been researching getting Fon, but I've been reading that the router may not be compatible with the n800, as well as certain Dell laptops. However, all the posts regarding this subject are from July 2007, way before the OS2008 firmware update and the new Fonero+ router. There has been a recent post in the French Fon forum but I don't know French and the translations using Google make the conversation nonsensical. There has been discussion disabling the power saving option or flashing the router with the dd-wrt firmware. Neither looks worthwhile, espcially the dd-wrt option, as I haven't done code since Qbasic (remember that?).
Has there been any progress in the whole router/n800 issue? Does the Fonero+ router solve this problem? Anyone have any worthwhile suggestions? I wrote to the support team at Fon but they have yet to get back to me.
Thanks!

I have a Fon router at home that I need to plug back in. I'll try to run a test tonight after I get home from work.

We have a FON router and I can connect to it and everything, but it doesn't seem to connect to the 'net. I've also been trying to connect to another wireless AP (linksys router I think it is?) and for some reason it screws up the whole connection. However, if I try a laptop's wireless, it will connect fine. My N800 kills the connection whenever it tries to connect. I have no idea what to do.

There is some information here which raises some issues with the N800 and Fon

I am not sure if these have ever been resolved.

Rebski: I've consulted that thread before and while many possible solutions were given, the issue was never fully resolved. The last post was dated sometime in September/October. I found a promo coupon online that would cut the cost of the Fon router in half so I'd like to act quickly.
I'm going to take this problem to the Fon forum. I decided to ask here first since this is a IT dedicated site and I knew some users had Fon.

At home I had two solutions for the problem:

a) hack the fonera and put dd-wrt (will loose the FON hotspost)
b) put the power management in the connection settings (advanced, last panel) to either medium or off (this would kill the battery)

They both work, but I am looking for a c) solution.

There is a new script on the DD-WRT forum to get this working again, I'm going to reflash my new FON I got this weekend and I'll test the script.

I have the same problem. I have two Foneras at home and I use the N800 with them. These two have FreeWLAN addon (thats a GUI upgrade to the stock Fon firmware, not a real alternative firmware). And I have a test Fonera with DD-WRT v24 RC6.

The connection quality is very low with all of them. I tried to set the power management to medium or turn it off (OS2008), switched off one signal of the two SSIDs, and tried DD-WRT.

Doesn't matter which setting I use, when I start an internet radio it is clear that the connection is useless. It's an easy test - just start the Media Player and choose a BBC channel, you will hear that it makes a silly noise and starts buffering again and again.

This summer I would like to use two Foneras as an access point and a repeater to be able to use my N800 in my room where I'll work, but this way.. :(

Re: Fon and n800

I have the old Fonera and the only way I found to get it working properly with full power saving on the tablet is: install FreeWLAN, hide the private SSID, connect the tablet to the public SSID.

I lose WPA encryption and I have to authenticate to fon, but this way it works fine. If you connect to the private SSID (which the tablet has some problems finding when it is hidden), your only option is to completely disable the power saving (which cuts battery life from almost 9 hours to 2-3).

If anybody finds a better solution I'll gladly take it.

Re: Fon and n800

I got a Fon router back when they started and were giving the wrt54gl(best router linksys ever made for the price, IMOP) I ran it as a phone hotspot for like 2.5 years and it worked fine and connected to anything I threw at it, even my n800...
I have since flashed it to thibor, cause I wanted some of the features(ie: priority, loging, better status lights, etc) its a great thing.

But they have since stopped giving the wrt54gl and now the have the laFonera, I think it may be a buffalo or somthing, I dont know alot about it but I have read that it has been hacked to run the open source firmies.

NOTE:
I've seen reports of folks getting nasty and even threatening letters from the Fon guys because they are subsidizing the price of the router because you promise to participate in the Fon community, they basically want you to be a Fonero or pay the xtra cash, All the Fon firmies send a "heartbeat" back to the Fon router gestapo so they know if you are playing by the rules or not, tho AFAIK it is possible to spoof those "heartbeat" packets to avoid any probs...

That said I never got any type of letter from them when I flashed mine, but that may be due to the legnth of time I played nice-nice.
