Re: TrueCrypt

Yep, I tried to compile TC5. It compiles and links successfully but seg faults when executed on the N800. It actually stays resident and eats up CPU until you manually kill it.

A big problem with Linux TC5 in general is its complete reliance on wxWidgets. Even if you try to compile it with NOGUI=1 it still needs the wxWidgets source.

An even bigger issue is that even if you had a non-crashing version of TC5 and just wanted to use CLI mode, the developers removed the -c option to create a new container from the command line.

I haven't tried TC 5.0a yet though.

The GOOD thing about TC5 is that it no longer needs to build a kernel module.

I've been working on that for a month or so but it's still not completely to my liking as far as release. I'll see about getting something posted by the end of this weekend.

Have you finished a test version or something?
The "create new volume" is not important.
If you have something available which can already mount and unmount would be great.

Actually I just sent my latest update to Steven Harper (the author of EasyCrypt) for review. Soon as he gets back to me with a couple fixes I asked him about, I'll get a package Debianized and ready to go for testing.

TrueCrypt 5.1 is out, it has the following new feature and fixes:

# Command line options for creating new volumes. (Linux and Mac OS X)
# Many other minor bug fixes. (Windows, Mac OS X, and Linux)
# Many other minor improvements. (Windows, Mac OS X, and Linux)

Maybe it is more usable on the N8xx series now?

I downloaded and unpacked the 5.1 source a few days ago when it was released but I haven't tried to compile it in Scratchbox yet.

Someone had posted a patch to 5.0 to basically disable GUI, which, although did result in a smaller footprint, still needed the wxWidgets libraries to be present to compile.

And last time I tried to enable Hildon support in wxWidgets to at least try running the GUI version on N8x0, it simply failed to compile properly. Even if it does, it looks like it might require substantial Hildonizing to make the actual GUI panels look usable on a small screen.

Never say never, though!

I posted my first test release of EasyCrypt on the EasyCrypt thread if anyone wants to take a crack at using it...
