You have a pretty cool step-dad.

There is a USB charging alternative. You have two choices:

1. Nokia CA-100
http://europe.nokia.com/A4317011

2. Proporta (or similar) USB chargin cable
http://www.proporta.com/F02/PPF02P05...547&t_mode=des

I use the proporta and it works well. You can get an adapter head for all of your devices (table, cell phone, ipod, etc) and only have the one retractable cable to carry. This is my solution.

Cheers,
James

Someone just sent me this link from amazon.

http://www.amazon.com/Nokia-miniSync...1490588&sr=8-1

It says its for the N800 do you think it can still charge the N810.

Re: is there a USB Charger?

http://www.dealextreme.com/details.dx/sku.7101

Includes dual-voltage AC charger and 12v DC car charger for USB devices.
Includes adapters for charging half-a-dozen different cell phones,

but add: http://www.dealextreme.com/details.dx/sku.4860

to be sure you got the right one for the Nokia.

Both together cost $12 shipped anywhere in the world.

wow, checked out the proporta, and I really liked, I think I will be getting one of those to get rid of all those proprietary cables in my bag.

I just got the DealExtreme 7101.
There's no docs.
Green LED is clearly idle.
Red LED seems to be charging.
Is red/flashing green charged or over-current, or what?
I've also seen green/flashing red.
Anybody know what they mean?

Looking for the one ring to charge them all.

I think it will. The charger point on both the N800 and N810 is the same. The USB posrt is different though.

Again the same USB and charger cable will also work for the N810 with this attachment - converts MiniUSB to Micro USB.

Re: is there a USB Charger?

Assuming the LEDs are showing status correctly, green flashing red probably means that the battery is charged, but the unit keeps drawing brief bursts of power. Could be to keep topping up the battery, or just to provide display power.

Did the 7101 kit have the new Nokia plug adapter or did you have to add 4860?

I got one off ebay, a retractable one that rolls up on a little reel, for $3.98, shipping included. Works great, very small and compact in a bag. I don't see it available now, though.

The forums are better than ever these days with the answers. Kudos.

I find that any Nseries charger works fine.

As nilchak noted, this adapter should work for power, though not for data without an additional adapter. However, please do be aware that several members of this site have complained in previous threads about these Boxwave power adapters. Apparently, at least some of the Boxwave adapters must be jiggled a bit in the N8x0's DC-in port before an electrical connection is made.

I have the Boxwave (Nokia N800 miniSync Retractable Sync and Charge Cable from Amazon.com) and it's defective--the DC prong which connects to IT is a little too loose. Sometimes it won't charge my N800. Wrote to Boxwave and they were nice enough to send me a prepaid label so I can send it in for replacement.

I had the same issue, the replacement also had the same issue, so I sent my order back to them for a refund, I hope you have better luck though. Also, FYI for everyone in this post. I noticed the charging over USB (when it worked, because of the loose connector) was VERY slow.

(Off-topic, but also, the n-Series power connector is absolutely horrible, I've had two chargers where the barrel of the connector started to bend and eventually snapped/ cracked. Good thing new ones are so cheaply bought.)

I got my USB charging cable from DealExtreme: http://www.dealextreme.com/details.dx/sku.4860

It works to charge the N800, but when I plug it into my notebook USB port I get a popup error message that a USB device has exceeded the power capacity of the port and USB functions are temporarily disabled (the N800 continues to show "Charging" though).

The wall wart charger that comes with the N800 provides 800 mA. USB ports only supply up to 500 mA, and that's a maximum. They may supply less, particularly on notebook computers.

I have noticed that as the battery charge goes down in the tablet the chances that the tablet will even charge on USB go down. I have never been able to get the tablet to charge once the battery indicator no longer shows the battery as full. I connect the charger and the tablet starts charging and then very quickly says not charging.

dubwise, did that DealExtreme 7101 do the trick, charge the N800? Have you used it getting its juice from a USB port or from an AC wall socket? You happy with the purchase? Thanks.

Re: is there a USB Charger?

The cable works, which is part of what you're asking.
One of the adapters fits the N810 power port.
I haven't tried running it from my laptop.
I'm not at all interested in risking my Thinkpad USb port
by plugging an 800+ mA load into a 500 mA source,
which makes my participation in this thread a little odd.

Until I can make sure that the flashing lights aren't, as I suspect,
an over current warning, my DealExtreme charger is relegated to
the devices that it doesn't complain about, such as my Treo and my powered hub.

DealExtreme tech support is on vacation for two weeks.
I'm waiting for them to respond to my query about the LEDs.

They are unlikely to know anything specific about that - they don't make the products, they just sell them. If you're really concerned, you should do some measurements.

Re: is there a USB Charger?

I have the Boxwave Cable - mine seems to work ok but if I jiggle the cable I can get it to disconnect, so it may be slightly loose - doesn't bother me - I use it mostly for the USB, but something to keep in mind. I do think that it is a handy little cable, especially combined with a Female A to Female A USB adapter - Sync, Charge and USB OTG in a very small package that I always have with me, although I would not probably use it as my "every day charger", and in fact I am not really sure how well the charger works (in regards to speed, etc,) b/c I haven't used it enough to say yet

That's called innovating !

Re: is there a USB Charger?

I just received the Nokia N800 miniSync Retractable Sync and Charge Cable from Amazon today, and I have to report it works on my N810 to charge it up from USB port.

But as widely reported the cable is a bit loose. Stangely, if I push the charger cable fully in, then the Nokia does not charge and seems loose. If I just push it in lightly just below the maximum depth, then the cable does charge the N810 without me having to push or pull the cable in any way.

In fact I am leaving my N810 on charge thru USB right now for the night.

As a Sync Cable, it works on my N810 also along with the Motorola micro USB (EMU) to mini USB adapter. The adapter converts the Mini USB cable to Micro USB to be able to be used with the N810.

The two cables make it a versatile pair as a charger and sync cable for N810.
