this is is a very important point - most computers when looking for an access point can be detected because they also broadcast, and also only report the access points which have to be visible; not only is kismet passive and thus can't be detected, it can see the clients too and the process by which they connect to access points (hidden or otherwise)

thus kismet can detect and analyse clients too, and not be detected.

in conjunction with aircrack-ng, they're formidable tools. At previous job, they had a WEP access point which they refused to do anything about, so I left aircrack's sniffer running, and a day later was able to crack the wep key on a laptop in less than 90 seconds. THe same day they turned off the access point!

This will give you an idea of what you're getting into. Kismet is a passive sniffer and with a working GPS you can map what you detect. This is called WarDriving which is a hobby for many in the Network Security field. It also is interesting if you're interested in your own network's security. If you have the resources, a lot of libraries have the book "WarDriving Drive,Detect,Defend" By Chris Hurley, Frank Thornton and Michael Pucol. There are three chapters on setting up and using Kismet on several different distros.

You can get Kismet 2007.01.R1b-1.0 from the Eko One repository in Poland. This is already setup for the Nokia 770/800 wireless "card" (don't know about the 810). You have to edit the kismet.conf to enable GPS.

Best of luck and Welcome to WarDriving!

you have to install a version of kismet that is not "ported" for 2008, although it runs on it...

Re: Wifi radar for maemo?

it might run on it, but you can't install (well, I can't, anyway) it from that link. It downloads okay, but Application Manager balks with:

Unable to install kismet.
Some application packages required for the installation are missing.

the [Details] button reveals that it's looking for

libpcap0.8 (>=0.9.3-1)
ncurses-base

I think that there could be some unknown repository for the missing packages that you need to install. That could be the problem, when i have a problem installing a applicatin i try to google the app and get more details about installing it.

libpcap0.8

I installed with apt-get

and

ncurses-base

I found a repository and installed with application manager; and then Kismet installed fine.

Mind letting us know where you found that repo? Or the address?
