Wifi radar for maemo?
Hi,
Is there any Wifi radar application available for Maemo? Thanks |
Re: Wifi radar for maemo?
kismet?
oh, you mean something reliable? :-( |
Re: Wifi radar for maemo?
Kismet seems to work fine for me...
|
Re: Wifi radar for maemo?
As long as you turn off the network manager to stop searching every 5-10 mins, kismet works fine. You'll have to reset wlan after your done, or reboot machine to be able reset mon mode, or use the net again.

Re: Wifi radar for maemo?
Cool.
Thanks guys. |
Re: Wifi radar for maemo?
What do you want to do? The connection applet does the same things as WiFi Radar did on the Zaurus. If you want a real scanner, go with Kismet.
I'm trying to get Wellenreiter to work, but it's an uphill battle. It's written in Perl, but there are so many unresolved dependencies. Walt |
Re: Wifi radar for maemo?
I also have kismet installed on the n810 but really don't know what to do with it...
|
Re: Wifi radar for maemo?
Ah man, I have now really starting using Kismet and it really is not working very well. It seems very inconsistent. Anybody know why? Also, I forgot how to reset the wireless *doh*, can someone refresh my memory?
Thanks. |
Re: Wifi radar for maemo?
how does one get and install kismet?

Re: Wifi radar for maemo?
Newf,
Start with http://www.wi-fiplanet.com/tutorials...le.php/3595531 This will give you an idea of what you're getting into. Kismet is a passive sniffer and with a working GPS you can map what you detect. This is called WarDriving which is a hobby for many in the Network Security field. It also is interesting if you're interested in your own network's security. If you have the resources, a lot of libraries have the book "WarDriving Drive,Detect,Defend" By Chris Hurley, Frank Thornton and Michael Pucol. There are three chapters on setting up and using Kismet on several different distros. You can get Kismet 2007.01.R1b-1.0 from the Eko One repository in Poland. This is already setup for the Nokia 770/800 wireless "card" (don't know about the 810). You have to edit the kismet.conf to enable GPS. Best of luck and Welcome to WarDriving! Karl electrolind |

this is is a very important point - most computers when looking for an access point can be detected because they also broadcast, and also only report the access points which have to be visible; not only is kismet passive and thus can't be detected, it can see the clients too and the process by which they connect to access points (hidden or otherwise) thus kismet can detect and analyse clients too, and not be detected. in conjunction with aircrack-ng, they're formidable tools. At previous job, they had a WEP access point which they refused to do anything about, so I left aircrack's sniffer running, and a day later was able to crack the wep key on a laptop in less than 90 seconds. THe same day they turned off the access point! |

Re: Wifi radar for maemo?
it might run on it, but you can't install (well, I can't, anyway) it from that link. It downloads okay, but Application Manager balks with:
Unable to install kismet. Some application packages required for the installation are missing. the [Details] button reveals that it's looking for libpcap0.8 (>=0.9.3-1) ncurses-base |
Re: Wifi radar for maemo?
Yeah, I had the same problem.
|
Re: Wifi radar for maemo?
I think that there could be some unknown repository for the missing packages that you need to install. That could be the problem, when i have a problem installing a applicatin i try to google the app and get more details about installing it.

Re: Wifi radar for maemo?
libpcap0.8
I installed with apt-get and ncurses-base I found a repository and installed with application manager; and then Kismet installed fine. |
Re: Wifi radar for maemo?
Mind letting us know where you found that repo? Or the address?

Re: Wifi radar for maemo?
I was attempting to do some "warwalking" yesterday with the built in app while on my way to catch a bus, I was looking to download E. Goldstien's radio show "Off The Wall" before I had to use my painfully slow edge cellie connection and it was impossible, the addition of "wifi info" helped a bit, but it seemed that these apps would be some of the first ported/developed for an handheld that basically REQUIRES wifi access to be any fun, "in the wild" which is where it was meant to be used, when Im at home in the area of my wifi AP, Ive got a handful of PCs and my Wii that all have browsers that are much easier to use, right? so lets get some good tools to look for wifi hotspots while in the wild, since "warCHALKING" never caught on we need some way to find APs...
with all that complaining in mind, realize Im not a developer and I have no ability to do it on my own...so all I can do is whine :) bhang |

1) A lot of people fall into that category I guess. That's why these apps aren't out there for the tablet. 2) Developers weren't born with the ability to program. They had to learn it...Maybe it's time you gave it a shot? :D |
