N810 USB OTG Adapter/Dongle
The overwhelming success of the N800 USB OTG adapter has led to the next obvious question: what about the N810. So for all of you N810 people who've been asking, here's what I'm proposing.
I'm hoping that my custom cable manufacturer will be able to give me some reasonable options for a direct cable, but the lead times (especially for Micro USB as it's extremely new and hard to find) may be quite long and I have no idea where the cost is going to end up being... so in the meantime here's what I'm thinking: a bundle that includes a 6" Micro-USB to Mini-USB dongle along with one of the regular Mini-USB to Female A adapters. This would allow for the expected automatic Host-mode switching, while also offering the convenience of a short dongle. The other advantage would be that if you have both N800 and N810 you only need one adapter (just plug it into the N800, or plug it into the dongle with the N810). Cost estimates: $17.00 Cnd/adapter+dongle package. Shipping would be the same as the N800 adapters: $4 Cnd within Canada $8 Cnd within US $11 Cnd anywhere internationally. (the shipping costs would vary slightly if you wanted more than say 2 or three due to increased package size). What does everyone think? Is it a worthwhile idea, or? Thanks, -Rob |
Re: N810 USB OTG Adapter/Dongle
$11 internationally! How much does this thing weigh?
I'm really keen to get a simple solution but $28 for a home-brew cable seems steep. If I could just get hold of a micro plug I could probably make it myself. Is it B or A? |
Re: N810 USB OTG Adapter/Dongle
I'd get a bundle instead of ordering these two readily available parts seperately, but I'd really prefer something like they did for the N800, a one-piece adapter from micro USB to Female A.

Re: N810 USB OTG Adapter/Dongle
Is it possible to have a cable with Female A and Micro male on the end? Something short like 2-3 inches so its flexible. That would be the ideal adapter :)

Re: N810 USB OTG Adapter/Dongle
So are you offering this bundle now?
And is there any news from your manufacturer on a single adapter for the N810? |
Re: N810 USB OTG Adapter/Dongle
Sorry, if I am asking stupid question, but wouldn't Female-Female USB A adapter attached to micro USB-USB male cable (shipped with N810) work?

I have one and can confirm that it works. The N810 switches automatically in host mode. For people living in Germany: Reichelt's order number is AK 676-AB If it really cannot be found in other EU countries (unlikely), I could organize a group order. Reichelt will only send abroad if you buy more than 150€ of stuff. For the US, a simple google search finds it available at digikey: http://search.digikey.com/scripts/Dk...name=H11503-ND (they also have longer cables, this one is the shortest). Digikey wants 13$04 for it, however. Probably cheaper sellers can be found. |

It's not. It says "mini USB", not "micro USB". Mini USB is the plug used on the N800, micro USB is the one used on the N810. |
Re: N810 USB OTG Adapter/Dongle
So I'm still confused. What's the bottom line, i.e. where can I go in North America (preferably Canada even) to get an adapter that will work for the N810? tx

But what I'm envisioning I guess is a micro B male to a standard A female, so you don't need an extra cable, just plug the device straight into the adapter & the adapter into the NIT. It looks like they were talking about the same thing in this thread, but weren't able to find anything suitable. |
Re: N810 USB OTG Adapter/Dongle
I am not aware of the offer from "dealextreme", but if it's cheaper go for it. Digikey is expensive.

Can someone please confirm for me that I'm on the right track for what I want? Since the N810 price seems to be dropping, I'd like to get these on order so I can be ready to play when my tablet arrives. :) |

Re: N810 USB OTG Adapter/Dongle
haven't read everything in this thread but I installed that USB Connect Software and then purchased a A to micro B and a double female adapter and I was done.
Anyone know how much power a USB keyboard is using? I'm trying to hyper-mile the battery. |

Re: N810 USB OTG Adapter/Dongle
Just to give you my experience.
I bought the following from cables4computer.com: ZIP-ADP-C10 USB A to Micro B ZIP-ADP-C09 USB A to Micro A ZIP-KIT-NK2 Nokia USB charging kit I was hoping that the USB A to Micro A would automatically switch to host mode when plugged in. It does not. I don't know if that is because my fault understanding it USB OTG or a faulty product. It does fit into the socket on the N810 but it is clearly not the right plug for that socket. I haven't found a probe tip fine enough to do a conductivity test between the appropriate pins. The other two items I am quite happy with and work together really well. The ZIP-ADP-C10 combined with a gender changer works fine to read USB flash drives when switched to host mode manually. The Nokia charging kit includes a retractable USB extension cable that, combined with the ZIP-ADP-C10, replaces the cable that came with the N810. Also with the charger kit comes a tip that does fit the N810 and plugs into the same USB extension cable. The power supply is a nice compact combo unit that either plugs into the wall or a car lighter socket and has a USB socket on it that provides ample power to charge the N810. I tried using just a regular USB socket on a computer and the one I tried did not supply enough currrent and the N810 told me so. So with what comes with the charging kit, the ZIP-ADP-C10, and a USB Female to Female gender changer (which you can easily find ... I got mine at The Source by Circuit City for under $10), I have a compact collection of cabling that does data transfer as a host (with the USB mode switching software) and as a client and also provides a means of charging from a normal power outlet or in the car. The only problems I had with cables4computer.com was my order was delayed because of some crazy process where I had to call them to verify my address ... the same address that I typed into the online form and they echoed back to me in a order verification email ... and they gouged me on shipping. Perhaps both issues was due to it being an international order ... I don't know. OK ... that was all longer than I expected but I hope that it helps someone. |

I don't know whether to get this with an F-F adapter or wait for the perfect adapter to appear: micro USB male to USB A female. The idea is to have something small and convenient to make UBS keys a viable type of supplemental storage. If I have to use the included cable and an F-F adapter I doubt I'll carry it around most the time. |

I also bought a WD Passport USB Drive ( http://www.wdc.com/en/products/Products.asp?DriveID=317 ) and the neoprene case that it came in fits the N810 (and I would guess the N800) quite nicely with room to stuff the tips/gender changer along one edge. If you really squeeze and stretch the neoprene, you can fit both the drive and the N810 in the case. Here is a link to the picture of the case http://www.con-ads.com/images/20049_...d3RhqNcXC7.jpg Still need to find an elegant solution to power the drive for the N810. As it is, some computer USB ports don't have enough juice ... never mind the N810. They supposedly sell a power injector separately specifically for the drive but it is a cumbersome beast with its own transformer. I am just looking for a simple Y cable with the power lines connected that would integrate nicely with my charger. |
