Re: Canola2 Beta3 Feedback Thread
e-motion :
Hi, the log always have more explanation.. can you send it? It seems that any atempt to "unninstall" the failed install goes wrong, because it actually failed install because apt-get (or the engine of the application install ) crashes. Again, when we do our tests (with clean devices, and with devices with applications) it doesn't happen so we really need the biggest amount of info to help. So, did you try doing the fulll (command line) unninstall / install ? If not, please tell us the message in the log on application installer and the result of running canola from x-term! BR Marcelo |
Re: Canola2 Beta3 Feedback Thread
how do i get the log ? I'm a total newbie when it comes to Linux stuff.
|
Re: Canola2 Beta3 Feedback Thread
not, it's not related to linux...
go to application manager, hit the menu (the icon beside the window title) there's a "Tools" menu... then a "log" item. But probably you're facing the common dependency problem. I will ask gustavo for the application so you can clean up without needing to resort to command line. Br Marcelo |

Re: Canola2 Beta3 Feedback Thread
@wazd : if possible try posting how to reproduce it in the garage page for canola
@e-motion : yeah, you hit the spot. You have 3 options (last one I don't recommend) 1) trying doing what is said in some post here in ITT about unninstall and install using the terminal. (it's hard for people that is not technically savvy ) 2) wait a little bit until we do more tests with the "fix" application made by gustavo.. that fix this problem... 3) flash the device, and the first thing.. install canola (this will for sure work) but we don't want you to loose your settings. |
Re: Canola2 Beta3 Feedback Thread
I'll take option 2) but I'm going to have withdrawals ;)

Yeah, Etrunko is finishing a easy to use package so you can use without having to know more technical stuff.
I think it will also help other people Thanks for reporting the errors.. Marcelo |
Re: Canola2 Beta3 Feedback Thread
First off...getting Canola 2 Beta 3 to even allow you to point the medial library to certain folders is a TOTAL pain. Looks like you have to know where the super secret points on the buttons are to click to open media and to add the checkmark to match that specific media. They have the click point about 2 pixels wide, in the lower right hand "corner" of the eye button (yes ...its a circle and has no "corner"....I know), or the lower right hand corner pixel of the folder icon.
Photo's FINALLY work....but took me longer to point to the media library on the cards, AND make the changes stick (issue # 2), than to actually feel inspired to Oooh and Ahhh at the photo's....more like Cripes and Doh ! I'll call this Alpha 3....painful |
Re: Canola2 Beta3 Feedback Thread
Hi... just a little feedback about video selection and management on Canola Beta 3.
The default behavior seems to be a vertical list, complete with video thumbs (assuming you also installed Canola tuning), and it might be nice if the management/display of videos were similar to the music browsing functionality. For example... when you are browsing through albums in your music collection, you may see a page with a fairly complete list of album covers (first link)... or in the context of a particular album, you always a previous/next album cover (second link), and the navigation is fairly straightforward. See linked images... http://spacepod.net/gallery/albums/n...5_49.sized.png and http://spacepod.net/gallery/albums/n...4_08.sized.png whereas when you are browsing your video collection... if you have more than four video thumbnails... you don't see anything beyond four thumbnails and titles, and 'swiping' to scroll up or down isn't necessarily jumping to obvious previous or next videos in the list. http://spacepod.net/gallery/albums/n...7_48.sized.png Hopefully my description of the behavior is clear... and that it would be nice to have the previous/next functionality in the video thumbnails list... in a manner that is similar to the music/album browsing. |
Re: Canola2 Beta3 Feedback Thread
why is it now , when im playing my mp3's when i have a long song title , it scrolls and never comes back??
|
Re: Canola2 Beta3 Feedback Thread
Hi Munky,
Can you tell us the name (size in letters that is giving problem )? we didn't face that.. so help us reproduce. It's very important that people wanting help / suggesting things understand that it doesn't help just to say " why this.." and try to detail the happening as much as possible. BR Marcelo |
Re: Canola2 Beta3 Feedback Thread
well , any song title that has to scroll is what does it. example of what happens: i select "call me when you're sober" by evanescence to play, goes to now playing , song title scrolls once then never comes back , so all that is displayed is artist and album title.
|
Re: Canola2 Beta3 Feedback Thread
Does artist and album scroll? It doesn't seem to scroll for "Super Smash Brothers Brawl OST"
|
Re: Canola2 Beta3 Feedback Thread
Strange, it should come back. It's "set" to: if name is bigger than space, scroll it, and after one loop, stop.
Artist and album do not scroll. All 3 info scrolling at the same time would be more a mess than something useful. |

Re: Canola2 Beta3 Feedback Thread
Hi slvr32: I think i understood you correctly, and it would be nice if we could make sure people have video thumbnails. We do want to integrate it but it only happens today if you have mplayer. Of course the same with music.
The idea is nice, and I will for sure put into consideration once we advance with the application, I think this can be added after the final release! BR Quote:

Re: Canola2 Beta3 Feedback Thread
The Canola2 Beta3 installation went OK, and the music player works fine. However, none of my internet radio stations work. Here is a URL example: http://208.122.59.30:7156
This plays in the built in media player, and also mediabox (version .94). The stream is from Shoutcast.com (sky.fm New Age station - no comments please about it being New Age music!). When I attempt to enter this into Canola, it comes back and says invalid URL. If I follow the directions referenced on the Canola website for internet radio and "right click on the "tune in" button on shoutcast to copy the link, I get this link to paste into Canola (http://shoutcast.com/sbin/shoutcast-...e=filename.pls) Canola accepts this and adds "Shoutcast.com (4977) to my list of stations, but always shows "list is empty" when I attempt to play it. How am I going to survive without listening to Yani?? Thanks for your work and time. Howard |
Re: Canola2 Beta3 Feedback Thread
Just wanted to let you know that I have the most current version of the Canola 2 beta on my 770 Gregale. When it works, I love it!
However, there have been numerous occasions when it locks up my unit requiring either a hard button shutdown or removal of the battery. I guess it is just wearing the memory out! Neil |
Re: Canola2 Beta3 Feedback Thread
nspeer : we are aware of that. Unfortunately as we have been saying here, the 770 version is almost a miracle =) The fact is that some of the most important components for Canola, like the Dbus (the component that helps canola 'talk' to other components), are very very old in the 2006. Imagine that they were improved in 2007 and vastly improved in 2008, so it is really almost a miracle that it's still "working"
So, in the end I cannot commit myself or the team to improve the 770 version more that we already did. I did asked to check if there was a way to speed up the first video playback (quite quite quite slow) and some other details but if they are bugs / lack of feature on the components we depend on, that we can't do much... and we do a lot of "memory consumption" tests, and in the 2008 we didn't find a leak like you're saying... and I think the problem must be also (speaking from our experience in the canola1) that some other component is dieing, and thus locks the device. There's a file that shows you why it froze last time. BR |
Re: Canola2 Beta3 Feedback Thread
Hi Howardcb : we will take a look, the .pls link should work, and if it is not working, then it's a bug.
did you try these ones and also failed: http://www.sky.fm/mp3/newage.pls We will look deeper! Marcelo |

Just installed latest Canola on N800/OS2008 yesterday. Very impressive but no sound when playing the N810 video. Will try some other vids later.
Edit: also how do I get canola to see upnp server? Edit2: sound is ok on same vid on N810 PS: Just trawling this whole thread. Will recheck the N800 problem from the cmd line and report any errors later. |

Couple of question (sorry if they seems dumb) a. Did you checked the master volume in the tablet? ( canola cannot sets the master volume device, and if the volume is zero or sometimes if the volume in the media player is zero this can influentiate canola) so make sure both volumes are in maximum b. Did you reboot the system (without being plugged on power) before installing ( just to make sure all the services are started correctly) if it was first time installing canola... theres no need to do so. UPNP : is already in final testing, it's a third party pluggin that we are adappting to canola, we plan to release in the next big, feature based update Marcelo |

a. I did check volume levels and again after your post because I do occasionally have my "dumb" moments :D b. Nope, I did not reboot before installation but this is the first Canola installed on my N800. Have rebooted now but still no vid sound (songs play ok). Running from terminal the only feedback from canola is "[]" (that's it I swear). Edit: forgot to mention that sound is ok when played via Media Player. UPNP: Good to hear, looking forward to it. Would be nice to have an all-in-one solution. On another note, if I read some of the previous posts correctly it has been requested to be able to select directories. I understand that this has implications for GUI design but I would settle for an interim/ alternative solution: restrict canola to only scanning directories containing ".canola" (empty file) or simply a user editable text file stating specific directories to scan? PS: I am online for the next hour so if you want to get to the bottom of the vid sound problem let me know what I can do to help, otherwise it may be ~3 wks before I am back. |
Re: Canola2 Beta3 Feedback Thread
Thank you for Canola. It really is a great piece of software.
Is there a way to cut a podcast feed from the web browser into Canola? I'm used to holding down the stylus until a context menu comes up and I can paste from there. |
