n810 won't connect to Wifi - Send in for repairs?
Hey all, sorry about the partial double post. Part of this post was written in an earlier thread, but this one is a little different.
About my n810: It has been updated with the newest OS version a few days ago. I've tried the issue (next section) after a fresh OS install as Nokia support suggested, without any positive results. I have also tried a suggestion from these forums of turning off power saving wifi options, but that did not help either. Here's the situation: There is an open public wifi here at work with no protection, and I have an 80% signal. It does not require you to agree to use it (re-directing you to a certain homepage). My PSP connects without any problems - and can load pages just fine. My co-workers laptop (Windows) can connect instantly, and surf without any problems. My n810 "connects" to the wifi, but receives no data. I can not open web pages as it claims I must not be connected to the internet. It won't load my contacts (gmail) as it can't receive any data. So it's technically connected, as it has an IP/default router/etc... all assigned properly, but it's not able to get data from the wifi. This has to be something on the n810's end as the PSP and Laptop worked perfectly. The 2nd odd issue is what appears to be ad-hoc networks. There are 3 open ones in this town with about 50% signal, and each one does the same thing to my n810 as this wifi at work. It connects, and get's all the needed ips/etc... but won't receive any data and can't load web pages. Odd...? The wifi is working though. I am able to connect to 2 different open wifis (both that redirect you to a homepage to agree on usage) and my home WEP router. Nokia suggested to try it after a fresh re-install of the OS, which did not work either. I can not even swap it out with a new one as the business I bought it from is going out of business and "all sales are final" (also they were out of them the next weekend). Nokia has suggested to send it to a repair center (a state away) and have them look at it. However, I envision them getting it - testing it on a wifi at their center and writing it off as "working". Does anyone have ANY suggestions to try here? Any software I should download that might help? I've only had it a week+ so I'm pretty new to the software available. If anyone can lend ideas here, it's GREATLY appreciated as I really don't want to send it back for what I presume will be a pointless waste of time. Otherwise, has anyone sent theirs in for repairs - and how was the service? Thanks again for your help (and the forums!) |
Re: n810 won't connect to Wifi - Send in for repairs?
I don't think sending it to a repair center will solve anything. I think it will be a waste of time and money. Since it works fine with your home WEP router and with other wifis, I think it is basically working.
Hopefully, someone will have suggestions about your problems with certain wifi setups. There are many possibilities. |
Re: n810 won't connect to Wifi - Send in for repairs?
Yeah, I suspect the same about sending it in for repairs geneven. It's the open wifi here in the building that the PSP and Laptop connect to that make me really frustrated. If those 2 can connect (especially the PSP!) why can't the n810. :/

Re: n810 won't connect to Wifi - Send in for repairs?
Until someone with more of a clue pops up, let me add:
Is there a system administrator who would have more of a clue, or a theory about why you have a problem? Tell them your home wep router works fine. Maybe you are lucky and have a system administrator who is helpful... |
Re: n810 won't connect to Wifi - Send in for repairs?
Unfortunately no, it's not my company's wifi - I believe it's the wifi of the company that leases this large building.
The Ad-hocs were small businesses with wifi for the customers. I may be able to ask them, but I'm guessing their network admin is a "contractor" and not solely employed by them. |
Re: n810 won't connect to Wifi - Send in for repairs?
No one else has had a problem like this?
Is there any software that has to do with networking? I have a bad feeling I'm going to have to send it for repairs... |
Re: n810 won't connect to Wifi - Send in for repairs?
Well I flashed my system to a slightly older version of the OS (the 2nd out of 3 available) just as a test - but it still does the same "connected, but not receiving data."
Any suggestions? I'm getting the feeling I better start packing it up to send in for repairs. |
Re: n810 won't connect to Wifi - Send in for repairs?
Have you tried to fiddle with the wi-fi power saving settings?

Re: n810 won't connect to Wifi - Send in for repairs?
Thanks for the suggestion, TA-t3. I did try that earlier due to the same suggestion, and I just tried it again with this slightly older OS. Still no luck.
It's just very frustrating as it has to be something on the n810's end as the PSP and Laptop connected fine. If you have more suggestions please let me know. Thank you. |
Re: n810 won't connect to Wifi - Send in for repairs?
Can you 'ping' the default router (as shown in netstat -r or netstat -nr'? (You may have to search around to get 'ping' installed if you don't have it already).

Re: n810 won't connect to Wifi - Send in for repairs?
Good question. I've only had the n810 for a week+ now so I don't know any of the programs that might help me here. I will install that if I can find it when I get home and I'll let you know the results tomorrow morning.
If you have any other suggestions in the meantime they are appreciated. Thank you. |
Re: n810 won't connect to Wifi - Send in for repairs?
Hmm... is "ping" also the name of the program?
|
Re: n810 won't connect to Wifi - Send in for repairs?
'ping' is the name of the command, and it may be a standalone package of the same name or part of some other package. A quick look on http://www.gronmayer.com/it/index.php shows a probable package:
iputils-ping You may be able to find it in your application manager package list, or if not, with this: http://www.gronmayer.com/it/dl.php?id=123 However, it may be installed already, as part of busybox.. I'm not certain, because I'm on OS2007 still and cannot check. Anyway, when you find it, or get it installed, you can execute it as follows: ping 192.168.1.1 (if netstat -r or netstat -nr shows default router to be 192.168.1.1, for example). It'll be interesting to see if you get any reply from the gateway, or not. |
Re: n810 won't connect to Wifi - Send in for repairs?
Excellent, thanks for the links I will install that when I get home from work and try it first thing tomorrow morning.
The n810 does automatically get an IP, DNS, etc... from the signal so we will see... |
Re: n810 won't connect to Wifi - Send in for repairs?
BTW, whatever the result of the ping test, it could be interesting to see the output of
Code:
ifconfigAlso check that /tmp/resolv.conf.wlan0 makes sense as well (this is, at least in OS2007, the data that normally goes to /etc/resolv.conf when connecting by dhcp, but in the IT that file just contains 127.0.0.1 because it uses a special internal dns intermediate server). |
Re: n810 won't connect to Wifi - Send in for repairs?
Hmm, you've long since surpassed my n810 knowledge, as well as Linux.
I think I can figure out how to check that. I'll try tonight and see what's going on. |
