Buy.com vs. Amazon?

I am not sure about Buy.com having never purchased from them before. Both have the N800 for about the same price . It would be $11.xx off at Buy.com using the 5% discount.

But I am unsure of them should something go wrong. OTH, I have never had probs dealing directly with Amazon. I mean we are talking a lousy $11ish difference...but still it's $11...a good lunch.

Any comments on how Buy.com is to work with?

I preferred them to Amazon back in Buy.com's early days when they were losing money on every sale, but planning to make it up in volume. Now that they're trying to maintain profitability, they're less fun.

I haven't any dealings with their customer service department in years, but they were good back then. My wife used to order a lot of DVDs from them, and UPS frequently crushed the boxes. Typically the disks were fine, but the Amaray cases were smashed. Buy.com never wanted anything returned, they'd just ship out replacements. I think we wound up with five copies of one title, though with only one good case.

At work, Buy.com once packed an extra external Zip drive with an order. They did want that back, but it was painless.

These days I use Amazon more often, but that's due mostly to wider selection and generally cheaper prices. When Buy.com is cheaper and offers free shipping, I choose them.

Note: In the interest of full disclosure, Buy.com once gave me a free T-shirt. Oh, and some note pads. That was some time ago though. Stupid tech bubble went and burst.

I think if you search the forums for the "power on/off enigma," you'll find that the majority of complaints (that bothered to mentioned a source seller) mentioned buy.com. I got mine from amazon in december and so far so good, fwiw.

Again I am being a whiner I think...just food for thought I suppose.

Sounds like maybe Buy.com just got a flaky batch of N800s. Maybe that was one of the reasons for that one-day sale last week that I missed.

I am gonna order from Amazon. I see no reason to agonize over $11...cripes...but I want my new one to cost $190 too dang it!! hehehehe...

thanks...

Amazon's return policy is much better. Buy.com switched to 14 days (compared to 30 days at Amazon), and the 14 days start to count from the day they ship the order, not from the day you receive it.

Additionally, if I remember correctly, Amazon does not charge a restocking fee on most items, and Buy.com does.

I would suggest to purchase from Amazon because I did purchased from buy.com and the unit arrived DOA (2 of them). Also, If you are Canadian and want to return a merchandise back to buy.com, they will NOT refund the taxes (PST & GST)...you have to apply to the respective govt. to get that back...and for an n810 the taxes could be around $62, depending on the province you live in...this could take months.

My preference, get it from Dell.ca or Dell.com...great service, wait for it to go on sale. If you return the product, Dell will pay for it. plus dell got a phone #.
