Amazon N800 bad lot.

I purchased an n800 from Amazon on 4th and received it on the 7th. Which I think was a pretty good turnaround time. Well, as you all know it comes w/ OS2007. I wanted to upgrade it to OS2008 so had to switch it off duh.

Ok that is the background now for the crappy part, the IT refused to start after that. I sent it back to Amazon and got a replacement today. So just to make sure that I did not have the same problem again, I switched it on played around w/ it for a bit and shut it down. Now it doesn't start. Can you believe my luck the same f**** problem again. I called Amazon to explain what happened and the CSR goes I think we have a problem w/ that lot. So this time they will not send a replacement but will refund me. Now I have to purchase it from Buy.

The real reason I'm posting here is to see if what the Amazon CSR said is true and there is indeed a problem w/ a lot and a bunch of other ppl have the same problem I have.

And if there is any way I can reset or do something to bring this puppy back please let me know. I dont really want to send it back and wait for another week :(

It's a software problem.

Re: Amazon N800 bad lot.

You didn't mention charging the battery; is it possible you ran the battery down?

Re: Amazon N800 bad lot.

@ssmith

I did not run out og battery and I did charge the battery. I dont think I completely charge the battery though but Im sure it did not run out of charge I checked before I shut it off.

Even if it did, dont you think it has to restart now that I have it plugged in?

@ GeneralAntilles

Is there a fix. A hardware reset button or something?

Supposedly the new firmware will be out in a couple weeks.

Dont think I can wait for a couple of weeks though:D I guess I'll buy from buy.com and make sure I dont switch it off. what if the new firmware doesn't come out and Im stuck w/ some thing that might stop working anytime.

Re: Amazon N800 bad lot.

I know the other day when I looked at Amazon they showed only two N800's in stock but more on the way. So, perhaps the current lot is better...hope so because mine is getting here tomorrow...shipped it today so it should be from the new lot.

I still wonder about that recent 1-day sale...that it was because there was a problem with an entire run of N800's.

Breck,

Good luck bud and let us know how it goes.

Dont know abt the sale when was this?

Re: Amazon N800 bad lot.

Just plug the device in and let it sit, it should turn on after a little while (to charging mode, you'll have to power it up with the power button from there).

Re: Amazon N800 bad lot.

Oh, I removed the battery and was planning to let it sit like that for a while. Ill go plug it in right now.

thanks...will let ya know...

BTW, apparently it's always good to charge a new LiON device fully and let it run down completely a couple times so the device can calibrate the power management software. Especially with the so-called "smart LiON" batteries.

apparently Buy.com and somewhere else I think had a one day sale on Feb. 5...sold out in hours apparently. The N800 was something like $189 including free shipping. There is a thread here somewhere.

Re: Amazon N800 bad lot.

Yeah I did see the buy.com thread. I purchased my IT a day before the offer went live.

GeneralAntilles,
Yay, it worked! Thanks man you are my hero :D

Now to never switch off and patiently wait for the firmware upgrade

BTW can I upgrade to os2008 by using the same technique. And more importantly, will my rpoblem go away if I upgrade.

I know the upgrade question is wishful thinking

This concerns me as I ordered my N800 on Friday. If it is a bad batch or something, I hope the tip the General posted works for me! :D

Re: Amazon N800 bad lot.

I got mine (N800) from Amazon on Feb 8th. I've turned it on and off a dozen times without any problem. One question to all who are experiencing the power-on problem: Where is your NIT made? Mine's Made in Korea. I expected a German made unit but I guess Nokia makes at least some NIT's in Korea. I wonder if any of you own an NIT that's from Germany? Also, if your's is German, does it have the power-on problem? Thanks!

Re: Amazon N800 bad lot.

This is very interesting. I ordered mine from AMAZON.COM on 2/6 and just got it today on 2/20. I guess they were waiting to get a new lot in or something. Anyway, this one I got is also bad. Mine was made in Korea.

I've found what the problem is too. If you leave the memory card out, no problem occurs. As soon as you try to do something that requires the memory card, the system locks and then tries to shut down. But instead, it just sits on the NOKIA shutdown screen indefinitely. When the screen backlight goes off, it seems like the unit is off, when in reality it is frozen.

Also, the "This application has stopped responding, click ok to end it" function doesn't work. Nothing can end the processes that are running.

The only way is to remove the battery and then put it back in and you can boot up again.

I was able to put on OS2008 and still am having the same issues.

Re: Amazon N800 bad lot.

I received mine from Amazon 2/12 and got it on 2/13 (I paid the $18 for overnight shipping...I mean why not right?) But it has worked like a champ the whole time. I have the included SD card in the internal slot and an 8GB Adata Class 6 card in the external slot.

I am wondering if this issue being described is limited to systems using the mini-SD in the included adapter. If so, I have had flaky adapters for MemorySticks from Sony that caused a system halt & core dump. The card had to be in the adapter just ever so to prevent the problem. Perhaps that might be the issue here? Forgive me is this has already been considered as I have not read through everything here. But, I have always found the most seemingly innocuous components can be the one causing an issue. An improperly seated card could easily be the culprit.

I think you found the solution when you mentioned no issues when the card is out of the machine. Make sure the mini-SD is perfectly inserted into the adapter and the adapter is fully seated in the internal slot. Also, you might try running with the included card in the external slot and see what happens.

Re: Amazon N800 bad lot.

Well, I'm sad to say I'm returning mine. I had two other SD cards, a 1GB and a 4GB. I formatted both just to be sure and no matter which slot I put them in, it would crap out on me as soon as I tried to access it.

This also caused the unfortunate problem of not being able to open the Maps application since it has to write folders to the SD card to hold it's maps when it starts up.

Also, when I tried to format the SD card from inside the unit, the card would just disappear and it would say there was no SD card in the slot.

Another VERY weird thing was that if I tried to us Maemo Mapper with my bluetooth GPS, it would reboot the unit. It would ask if I wanted to pair the two devices and as soon as I did, it would reboot.

So now I'm in mourning. I really liked this thing and was looking forward to many days of fun and utility...

Maybe I will get one again in a couple of months...

Incidentally, the amazon.com people seemed to recognize the N800 and had a "not another one of those!" sort of tone in their voice when I told them what I was trying to return. They apologized sincerly and are going to pay the shipping back for me.

Hey sorry for not reporting back on how the upgrade process went. I never got a chance to upgrade. The day before I was supposed to upgrade I got mugged and the police returned my Tablet this week and so I finally got around to trying to update the tablet today. But this time it refuses to start up! I've bin charging it for about 6 hours now. I will check in the morning and see if it starts up :(
