How do we 'use' the rating of a thread?

Every tiime I visit the forum, I always puzzled about this thing called "rating". Some of them are 5 stars and some of them are 1 star. But whatever the number of stars, they are more eye catcher than the nonrated ones, i.e., a one star or no star still better than no rating, in degree of eye catching. Since I am wondering, I 'rated' one of my thread as 5 stars just for fun, and from now on it is a 5 star thread .

What am I rambling about? That those ratings are not much different from "your own mother said you are good."

My guess is that you would give a star/s to those threads that are on topic and have a solution to a problem. The fewer the stars the less on topic they are? it just adds another criteria when doing a search.

Bun, the ratings work as well as they're used. In a few cases that is very well, and in most not so much. I tend to apply either 5 or 1 and rarely any in between, based on how valuable a thread strikes me.

I am afraid to say, you are the only one understand this post. What good does it do if everybody rate their own rating? Am I missing something? Another one, if I rate some thread 5stars, and somebody else rated it 1 stars, would I "expect" to see the ave of 3 stars. I am NOT sure.

Just a thought.

Well thanks Bun, but I'm not sure I understand it really. I would imagine that the individual ratings that people give to threads are averaged out by the system. I get your point though. Like a lot of things on the internet, it's as good as the users ,like texrat said. Speaking of which, love to hear about what else you do for fun in that thread.

I think Texrat is correct in a way that "rating" works as well as they're used. I still chuckled that one can 'rate' themselves.

Yeah, but it's not hard to bring down a self-rating. You rate your thread 5 stars, and then some rodent comes along with a 1... :D

I did do an experiment on a poor fellow's thread, it was a 5stars, and i added a 1star rating, the poor soul's thread became a 3stars immediately (that means, there is only one 5star rating for that thread, umm). I was about to reset it and voted for a 5stars, "changing rating is not allowed". Now, there is a 5star thread in the forum got pull down by a naughter member, downgrade to become a 3 stars. So much about this BS. BTW, I just counter balanced with another 5 stars, now it is a 4 stars, that is fun

Man Bun, you must have devistated that guy. I mean, there he was with five shiny stars and you came along and ruined it for him. But as we now know, he can just start a new thread, title in 'who stole my stars?' annd then give himself five new ones. But one still has to watch out for various rodant breeds, especially the Texas variety. ;) N

I just notice now, there are way too many 5 stars rating. I think I just unleased some 5star motivation, now everybody is rating on their own. Good job, bun.

I must say, this is going to be blinding with all those yellow stars. Oh well, five stars for everyone:D
Now to the issue of the thanks button. How can I thank myself too?:) I really want more thanks. Sorry, I'm just not taking this thread seriously enough;)

sungrove, was about to thank you since you asking for it, then realize there is NO thank you button on off topic thread. Reggie is sneaky.... and upon counting stars, I just lost one, that must from the ......

I will get up a big thank you on whatever your next post, how about that :) ?

Re: How do we 'use' the rating of a thread?

I think it would make more sense to have only a single option - "I rate this thread highly". When the total count reaches some value a single star will appear (this is still very good, as most threads have no stars at all), at the next threshold another star appears and so on. 5 stars would mean that a _lot_ of people thinks the thread has high value.

Thats what it looks like, but in fact, one person can set the rating into a 5stars.

Well, that was my point exactly.. today you can rate it 1 to 5 stars, and if you set 5 stars (and nobody else sets anything) you'll get a thread with 5 stars. I described a different setup, it would look different (I'm not sure what you meant by 'Thats what it looks like'.. it doesn't look this way now)

I echo what your said, that the 5 stars appears a collective work of more than 1 person, the appearance, but in fact, its by one person, and even worst, it is by the OP.

too bad it doesn't indicate how many votes make up a rating.

Yes it does when you put your mouse cursor over the stars
Now 6 votes
