[KDE] 4gb Partition
If this is the partition instructions from pronukes KDE instructions for a 2gb card - then what would be the instructions for a 4gb card?
/dev/mmcblk0p1:1,15000,6 (this is a ~480 MB FAT32 partition) /dev/mmcblk0p2:15001,, (this is a ~1.5MB Linux_83 partition) yep - I'm getting started on installing the KDE! |
Re: 4gb Partition
would I be correct in following a multiple of 30...
about 480mb is 15000 and about 6mb is 180000 from another thread... then 2gb must be 60000... correct? |

when sfdisk, use option -uM, then one can just use MB instead of guessing. Post if question. bun |
Re: 4gb Partition
questions...?
been at it now for three hours with out getting it done... been a very long time... last time I worked a prompt it was a dos prompt! |
Re: 4gb Partition
for instance - just tried to start again and tried to command...
umount /media/mmc2 and it returns: cannot umount... invalid arguement bummer. wonder what the problem is? |

Do you have virtual mem engaged? uncheck virtual mem from control panel. Are u root? N800 internal mmc2, (behind battery cover) or N810 external mmc1 (behind kick stand). Sometimes the mmc2 or mmc1, in fact is NOT mounted, then the umount command will return an error message. Just ignore the umount step, proceed with sfdisk. If failed, then reboot, and try umount again. bun |

I am root....
checking the memory... |
Re: 4gb Partition
following those instructions at pronukes with no success wore me out...
anybody that has been done this install want to lend a hand I would appreciate it - send me an email at carlatho@pacbell.net and I can give you my phone number to discuss. Perhaps discuss Saturday morning. Carl |

Re: 4gb Partition
will do...
I decided to reflash to a new 2008os to get a fresh start - doing that now. Honestly - the first time through for a newbie - its overwhelming. |

Another bonus, once you did it, the next time you want to do it again, you do not have to do any prerequesit, just ./nupgrade.sh and that is all it talke. Try it and then thank Milhouse's script. bun |
Re: 4gb Partition
I tried that but the website was down or my browser would not connect - so I went back to the harder way (!) - and - well - I don't exactly know where I'm at.
Still I am right now watching the n800 transfer the operating system presumably to the mmc2 (but I do not know which partition I sent it to. I did get the program running that lets you select where you boot from - that was progress... How do you verify you have two partitions on the card...? File Manager? Thanks for hanging in there with me through my learning curve. |
Re: 4gb Partition
ok - after all the action - I rebooted and selected mmc2 partition 2 and that failed.
Then I booted again and this time it booted when I choose mmc. I think that is success - next is the kde... when I check file manager and check the size of the n800 directory - it shows total size as 251mb... shouldn't it say about 2gb? |
Re: 4gb Partition
bun...
gonna need a phone call on this one... cant seem to get the memory card formatted properly... send me an email and I will send back my phone number... carlatho@pacbell.net |
Re: 4gb Partition
try me on aim, my name is bunansonn (AIM).
one extra n after bunanson. if that fail, I will get on the phone to help you. Talking on phone is difficult. Or, you have any other chatting mechanism? Ok, I thin you are making very good progress. I like diskUsage, you can get it here, www.gronmayer.com/it/, search for diskUsage, click the green install button. It will tell you everything about your mmc. Forget about formatting, it is not very important. Get the partition right first, and clone the Os. We then take care of the formatting. You do need 1.8+G for the KDE installation though. Hope this help bun |
Re: 4gb Partition
the partition must be important - when I tried it without a partition on the card - the KDE did not appear in the Extras menu after an exhaustive one hour tar.
how many users have actually loaded KDE? |
Re: 4gb Partition
Me, ...and Penguinbait.
Mind to tell us moer about the system info? bun |
Re: 4gb Partition
Ok Bun - Thanks for your assistance in getting me off the ground loading KDE...
I finally got it. I think my difficulty was in two areas... total lack of knowledge of xterm commands and a flakey SD card that would not take the partitioning instructions... it was a mistake to reflash 2008os - even with the backup - I have to rebuild a lot of what was on the n800 prior to the flash. We need to assemble the various instructions in one place - like a wiki or something. Going back and forth to your posts, milhouse posts, pronukes page, and the post with the boot to mmc instructions was so cumbersome. Still - I did get it loaded. Now... The mmc2 still shows corrupt even though it runs the OS and stores KDE on partition 2... I suspect the format failed on partition 1 using the automatic nupgrade script. I agree with you that you lots of space on that partition to run the kde. More to follow in other threads about details of kde. Thanks Bun! |
Re: 4gb Partition
Hey, hey, you, you are not done yet. You please read my post here, http://www.internettablettalk.com/fo...ad.php?t=16383, which echoes exactly what your feeling, as my paycheck you are asked to post a thread there and make a VERY strong statement. Thank you. I am holding my breadth.................;)
And of course, congratulation on a job well done. bun |

Re: 4gb Partition
The easiest way to load KDE on your N800 and booting from your SD card I think is:
1. Have a big partition for the 2008OS, over 2.2 GB for example, and then clone your OS into it. Of course, we should use sfdisk with-uM for partitioning. From http://maemo.org/community/wiki/HowT...your_MMC_card/ sfdisk /dev/mmcblk0So let's say if we have a 4G SD and we use -uM option then: sfdisk -uM /dev/mmcblk0Clone the OS into it !!!! 2. Have USB hostmode enabling script, so we can have another SD card holding KDE358v2.tar.bz2 and SUPv2.tar which we have downloaded into it the PC then copied from the PC to the SD. http://www.tablethacker.com/software/KDE358v2.tar.bz2 http://www.tablethacker.com/software/SUPv2.tgz 3. bzip2, tar, ... ready 4. run cd / |
