Screen Visibility in sunlight?
Hi there,
this is my first post on a forum and I want to say hello to everybody and thank you for taking the time to answer me. How is the visibility of the screen in sunlight and is there a differnce between the 810 and the 800? |
Re: Screen Visibility in sunlight?
there is a huge difference. I can not read the N800 in sunlight but the N810 is readable. It has some fancy name - transflective or something

Re: Screen Visibility in sunlight?
The N810 is very good in sunlight!

Re: Screen Visibility in sunlight?
Can you buy transflective screen protectors? Now that would be a handy addition for my N800. Not that I use it outside much....but...

Seriously, the transflective layer needs to be behind the LCD, not in front. |
Re: Screen Visibility in sunlight?
That is right, the N810 has a transflective LCD screen, while the N800 does not. It does make a HUGE difference, IMHO. You cannot see the N800's screen at all in direct sunlight, and barely if you are just outside. It sucks.

Yes, this is one of the few points in favor of the 810.

If it was only in bright sunlight... Today I took the N800 as navigation device on a hiking trip. It was cloudy all day but nevertheless it was nearly impossible to read the N800 display.
The missing daylight visibility of the display is the only thing with the N800 that really sucks - big time. Quote:

Re: Screen Visibility in sunlight?
N810 transflective screen is one of the less known features of N810 , that makes it a much more better choice then N800 . Sunlight makes most of the tablets unreadable .

Re: Screen Visibility in sunlight?
Some people are being a little hyperbolic here; You can read the N800 screen in direct sunlight, with large fonts, white on black, and backlight all the way up -- but it's very hard. It's quite readable for web browsing etc. most of the time outside, as long as the backlight is all the way up. Mapping, at least with hybrid maps, is not very readable outside, short of seriously shading eyes and N800 with one hand.
It is bad in daylight, and I'm sure the N810, being transflective, is loads better. But it's not all that unreadable outside. |

I don't have any IT yet, but I took my Tapwave Zodiac (PalmOS PDA) and Nintendo DS Lite out in the sun the other day. The Zodiac has a transflective screen and was just as readable outside as inside. Very impressive.
The DS Lite screen, on the other hand, was almost invisible. Does anyone know what type of screen the DS Lite has? If it's the same as the N800 then I would definitely not want an N800. |
Re: Screen Visibility in sunlight?
The only comment I would add is the colors lose saturation when used transflectively - it is pink, not deep red. But everything is as readable as anything I've seen. The only problem I've had is it looks better the closer to directly reflecting the sun, but it will act like a mirror so you don't want to stare at the reflected sun directly. (I don't know of they can do antireflective touch screens).
This sunlight readability sold me on the unit, but it has just gotten better. I was looking for a UMPC or tablet (tuftab) with such a display, but they are several times more expensive. |
